Tried the decoder, but nothing. I guess it has to be exactly right, finetuned settings in the visualisation software (I'm using Spectrogram 16), but I don't understand anything about this kind of analysis, I've just been fiddling with the controls until I got this image. Have tried several settings but I lack the skills for this. I might figure it out in ten years or so Laughing

After several more attempts, I think I'm just getting too much gray in my images; I need to get strictly black and white lines to make the barcode recognizable.

well I'm not sure how much help I am, but I just did the spectrogram and it looks like it could possibly be a barcode, but at what scale does one consider the 'bars'? zooming in, there's a lot of really small, repeating noise patterns, but whether that's important or not, no idea... I've attached a clip of the entire static area, which looks like it could be considered to be a barcode... *shrug*
could be morse, could be another signal, could just be noise... too hard to tell. hope that helps =P

As usual, I appreciate the help.

Your pic looks like a more Matrixy version of what I've been encountering here, thebruce! Nice to see you, by the way.

This here's the closest I can get to an actual barcode. Running it through the decoder has no results, but is it because it's not the right image yet, or I'm really on the wrong track?

Look at those gray bars. How can I turn them entirely white like the ones in the middle and at the sides?

Sonic Visualiser - iz your frend! Wink

As for making it into a barcode, no idea. If there's no guidelines or precedent, then it's all trial and error... just try things. *shrug*

That's pretty good, unfortunately, I have no idea how to help!

Looks like there are literally billions of possible images an analyses can deliver. Trial and error, more like dumb luck and pure chance. There's got to be more to this ...

Sorry Guys I'm gonna be out of commission for a bit. My Wifi screwed up so badly that I'm gonna need to reinstall my whole operating system! Sadly it'll take some time for me to collect all the ARG tools I've got installed so until then I'm not gonna be much use!

Wow, there's been a whole boatload of stuff going on and I've been out of the loop. Didn't make it to the launch party unfortunately due to work and otherwise have been bogged down with duties. Catching up now though, hopefully can contribute again soon.

Someone at the Deleted forums described the way to go about it. Boy, was I way off track with my barcode theory.

So if you're tired trying to figure it out by yourself, I suggest you hike on over there, follow the steps, look at the result and then I'm sure the rest will be starting to make sense.

Holy crap. I'm back from my week from hell! So maybe I can be of some use here.
Did anyone decode Ethan's message by any chance? If anyone did, can you PM me? I just didn't have the time to mess with it. (I started grad school this week Sad )

EDIT: Upon checking my email I see I got a message from Tyler. She wrote this:

Thank you so much for your help, Irene! I followed your advice, and finally talked to Tim Daniels, but I still don't know if I can trust him. He seemed so strange and confusing, and is telling me to do something completely different than anybody else. Everybody keeps telling me something different. What do you think I should do? And now there is this other message from Ethan. Why won't he just say what he wants?

I wrote back asking her to tell me what Tim Daniels is telling her to do. She didn't answer me though.

Is anyone around waiting for episode 4? Does anyone want to make use of the #deleted room on Chat Solutions in IRC? I'll be hanging out there if anyone is interested.

The image on the CD

Here is what is on the CD, though I admit I'm not sure yet how to properly use it. Hopefully someone else will know what to do with it.

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to add two other things from Episode 4:

1. Tim's line, "May you live in interesting times," is a Chinese proverb. It is also the first of three Chinese "curses":

May you live in interesting times
May you come to the attention of those in authority
May you find what you are looking for

All three of those seem somewhat relevant, but of course it may end up being nothing.

2. The graffiti on the wall. It should mean something; I can't believe Ethan threw that water right there for us to stare at what's on the wall and have it be a coincidence. Also, are those "1"s or "l"s? Meaning, does the graffiti say "ELO 'dot dot dot' 4" and "GL 'dot dot dot' 7"? Or are the Ls 1s?

my thoughts.

the image on the CD is a translator of numbers to letters, a simple code you work with in primary school so its a no brainer, i was thinking that the message on the wall is short hand because in the G1dot7 the series of dots are similare to therefore (or because) as ive used it in mathes before.

the PDF that was found, does the format also play a part because its in a series of 5 letters and so i think that maybe its going to lead us to the next set of codes to use. and my thought on the the wav file is it is morse code because of how the rapid succession of noise followed by the scilence sounds like a message.

did anyone get the second half of the message in tylers myspace because its realy hard to decipher because i tried the grid thing but it didnt work. also we were waiting for a time when tyler was to meet ethan, has anyone got any closer to that??

C

few things..

1. Looks like Tyler is totally missing now.

I emailed Tim to ask if he knew where Tyler was or had heard from her again, this was his reply:

Dear Lucy,
I have no idea where she is. After we talked on the phone, she never called again. I'm very worried if she isn't at home or in some form of communication. She was in great danger before, but at least we knew where she was. Do you have any idea how we can reach her?
Tim

So, my guess is that she is w/ Nicole or w/ one of her friends (one of us). She's abandoned her apart and every form of contact that I know of for her, and Ethan can't get in touch with her, but asked her friends to help (which makes me think one of us knows where she is).

btw, I think Tim is evil but I'm going to keep talking to him b/c he is the only character that will talk back to me.

2. If you're having trouble w/ the PDF file hidden by the picture, don't think so hard. You probably know how to decipher it.

3. I agree w/ redsshoes about the Chinese proverbs and that it probably will come up again

4. I thought our friends status was based on points, but I'm still an acquaintance! Sad
