Can two alien cultures coexist in one writers room? Sci Fi is entering a brave new world by teaming television writers with video-game designers to create a franchise that is both a television series and a massive multiplayer game on the Internet -- more than that, the fans who play the game will actually help shape the show's story arc with their virtual exploits.

"For example, we can tell them that there will be an alien invasion at a certain place in the game, at a certain time, and to be there with all their friends and be ready. The outcome depends on them. And then that battle will be part of the universe in the show."

It's an interesting idea, but not very plausible the way it's presented in the example. That'd be hell on the writers if the players' actions in a game decided the course of the TV show! I'm guessing "part of the universe" will only entail a small, brief mentioning of the event by one of the characters, if that. The integration of TV show and game, as depicted in the article, strikes me as no different than what Stargate Worlds is.

However, I can see this concept easily being adapted to an ARG. Take an amateur team of actors and a hand held camera, create a few 5 or 10 minute episodes for a "TV Show," and present it with the idea that the audience can alter the events through participation. I'd definitely take part in a game like that.
