Unless you're a career programmer, why would anyone? Especially considering VS2008 Professional's price range of $709.00 to $2,349.00 (lowest price of $700 does not include any MSDN help disks; a real programmer would need the $1200 package minimum).

Although now I see they did something smart: they made VS2008 Standard be Web only and reasonably affordable ($260), and moved application development to the Professional version.

Of all the products Microsoft has, I still wonder why they chose this one; their audience is so narrow. And it's a product that really doesn't need additional publicity considering it's virtually the ONLY development IDE on the market. Never did we even see them use Visual Studio; nobody could tell that VS was involved in all this, so what was it really publicizing?

I lost track quite a while back... I already use VS - but only Visual Interdev, for its project management and text editor. And I'm still using VS6. VS.net lost some simple functionality I treasured.
Even then, for non-frontpage-extensions-enabled websites, I just use Cuteftp for text editing Razz

*Ahem* BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO and such.

Bottom line is, in all, even it's shortness, Holomove was a good game. The ending... not so much. As the discussion seems to be- it was fun, up to the Miami trip, where it seemed like everything was on autopilot. Hell, Nate was solving puzzles(I'm sure due to time constraints). But this is the same guy that came to us with *everything* to solve. The line between reality and alternate reality was breached in those moments for me. And, cliche agreement here, 4 days notice isn't enough for a trip to Miami. Why didn't the PMs scour around here and find the largest congestion of us to meet up with? I know that there's myself, Chixor1 and sylvia all in the Louisville...ish... area(so Sylvia is 150 miles away, that's a lot closer than to Miami) and they wouldn't even have had to pay for transport, really. A little gas money. Big deal.

Point being, I enjoyed the game... but the ending just made me feel icky. I look forward to a wrap chat so we can tell them so.

When it was finally discovered that VS08 was the product connected with Holomove, I was a bit perplexed why I would fit their demographic. After taking the survey I realize I was part of the exact demographic they had in mind. Their main target audience was the ARG community, with the probability, I'm sure, of snagging a few developers/programmers in the process.

As a whole the game was entertaining, but the ending was, less than satisfying. I liked the fact that Holomove couldn't be connected with any company/product for the most part. In fact, we almost made it through the whole game without ever knowing any product connection. Thanks Microsoft.

I do agree; no mention of Visual Studio at all (except for people joking about it). I did like that aspect.

Nope, it didn't make me buy Visual Studio, but I got a free copy from my school already (the $1200 version!). Except it was the 2005 edition. Oh well.

Finally, we really need a tape of Erik being confronted by Nate, then Dr. Gough comes in and Erik says, "....B-b-b-bbut you're supposed to be DEAD!". And then gets hauled outside where the police are waiting.

Hopefully, with a little more notice than we got for the live event in Miami, and hopefully after next Monday.

Visual Studio seems cool and all, considering they came up with Holomove but uhh...

What does it DO?

Ugh... what a fizzle that was. Sad

Anyway, for anyone who still cares, there's a micro-epilogue to the Holomove story here, with a link to a "Visual Studio 2020 Challenge"...

*sigh*

Make stuff.

Their Express Editions are better anyways.

For those who don't want to view an inline wmv file, you can download it by right-clicking this link. Yes, the filename really is "ARG end 2020 start"

Oh they can't be serious...

Quote:
Envision what technologies might exist in the year 2020, and how software will be needed to support them. What kinds of technology do you think you'll be developing for, using a 2020 version of Visual Studio? What software would a 2020 version of Visual Studio empower developers to create alongside these new technologies?

Prizes are kinda "meh", all things considered:

https://visualstudio2020challenge.com/Prizes.aspx

But you better hurry, as "Submissions close June 30, 2008"! Microsoft doesn't take their time on anything, do they?

*cough* lame *cough*

I also really enjoyed playing a game that had no specific corporate affiliation. Made it seem more like a game than an advertisement. However, with that in mind, they failed miserably in their advertising, because their job was to promote visual studio 08 and widen our product knowledge.

If you want my professional opinion, with the loss of their prodigal son Bill Gates, fumbling with their OS releases such as Vista and ending support of solid technology like XP/NT4, and the emergence of quality alternatives to Windows, I would assume that by 2020 there would be an equivalent application development suite based in Python for KDE under Linux and the real hardcore devs will be using that instead. For anything that absolutely has to be dealt with in Windows we'll just use the equivalent of Cedega/WINE. In other words, Microsoft will still be around, but they'll be playing second fiddle and the last thing we'll be concerned about is the latest release of Visual Studio.

Do they actually believe the will have over 150 entries? I don't think there were 150 people following this. A 15-day submission period really doesn't give much time for word to spread about the contest, and it seems today was when we first learned of it, giving us all of 6 days to enter. I might have entertained the thought, except I'm in the middle of a job-related move, and unless one of the prizes changes into a job offer, preferably Gates' old job, I'll have to pass.

Quick! Help Microsoft come up with a software concept so they can start developing it in time to release it in 2020!

I know! It should be a new operating system called Windows Leoptard! It will have integrated features called Spaced and Pastime Machine and iTuned! It will be so awesome...

oh wait. nevermind. Rolling Eyes
