[Blog] [Ariadne] July 16 blog entry re:Kentaro & Markus

new Ariadne/Alex blog located here
Let's see if I can summarize.

Kentaro is Noriko's younger brother, from the 2004 lost ring team.
Noriko wants Kentaro to travel through the omphalos with her, back to their home world.

We don't know what to do with Markus.
Ariadne says that Markus was sent here, not Mauritz. [so I guess there isn't a amnesiatic Mauritz lost in central Europe somewhere?]

snippets from the end of the blog entry:

Ariadne wrote:
Does Markus have any loyalty to us? Has he done anything to help our mission?
So do we trust him?

Eli always says that to plan our future, we only have to look toward our past. So I have a feeling there's someone who can help us figure this out. Someone from our past.

Something happened to the original lost ring team back in 1920, after they wrote The Lost Ring Codex. Someone stayed behind to found The Opposition. But which traveler was it, and why? Are there any hints in the Codex?

Monica is sophrosune. And her great uncle knew one of the original travelers. She might not know any more than we do, but she can listen to our theories and use her strength to help us judge the situation. If you have ideas for who to trust and what to do about Kentaro and Markus, write her at monica.alt77SPLATgmail.com.

From the same post:
Ariadne wrote:

Markus swears that even if Theo meant him to be our enemy, he trusts us and feels like he is part of OUR team, not theirs. So do we trust him? Did his amnesia wipe out his Theo mission and make him one of us? Or is he fated to be our opponent? Can you ever really change sides?

I am confused about Markus' position. His last four messages are somewhat contradictory:

June 20: Please believe me:
- Markus says he does not remember anything (Still on the six side!?)
June 20 (same day): Desynchronisation:
- He did the desynch mission (to help James?) but he states:
"I am oficially with Theo" (just means he did the desynch mission)
"He is right: We should not let die other worlds just to let this one survive" (On Theo's side?)
June 25: Email from James:
- He is happy that James finally found the 27 new members, because now James could access the message system of Theo. (On the six side?)
July 2: Omphstrength:
- "We have to be sure that the omphstrength does not raise further. Long live Theo" (definitely on Theo's side)

Could it be that Markus is schizophrenic?

Well that makes a total of two travelers that aren't a part of the original six sent here since James wants to find Toria. We know that Alex has given up her spot, maybe Markus isn't planning on returning leaving a spot open for Kentaro.

Another important point regarding Markus:

He normally should know about James helping us, but he has not told Theo about James (I assume)

Do we know we are limited to six spots? I know we need 100% Omph Strength to move six, and can't move them all if we didn't get there, but it seems like we could get 200% Omph Strength if we wanted to. I was thinking the question of who gets to go only mattered if we didn't get enough strength.
Also, do we really know Alex has given up her spot? I thought she expressed some big trepidation about multiversal travel, thinks she destroyed her world and said she wasn't sure she wanted to face amnesia all over again. . . but did she really say she wasn't going to try to leave when the time comes?

Anyway, I think if Kentaro comes as a legit member of the team then joins the opposition, it would be possible that Markus came as a legit member of the opposition and joins the agonothetai-- I mean, it could happen. But there's not much to indicate what's going on there.

Yes, we can send more than 6 back home if the strength is high enough.
But it is not only about the strength. The omphnet has also to cover 85% of the earth else only one can go:

Ariadne wrote:

At least one of city labyrinths needs to be pretty far north (Scandinavian countries, maybe?). And at least one of them needs to fill in that big hole we have in the net, over Africa. Otherwise, we'll never hit our target: to cover at least 85% of the Earth's surface.
...
The omph strength of our network is up to 189.7! Do you know what that means? If we finish the network, we could send home all of the agonothetia from 2008 AND most of the agonothetai from 2004, if they want to come with us!

BUT. Eli says we need a backup plan. Just in case we don't finish the omphalos network before the Opening Ceremonies.

He says the 2004 team was only able to send one agonothetai home in 2004 because they didn't finish their network. He says WE need to figure which ONE agonothetai gets to go home if we don't complete the mission.

I've just mailed Monica with my view on all this. I'm thinking Theo is perverting people's strength, making them more selfish than before, and maybe it's all the founder's fault. If we could understand who was it, and why...

I'll tell you if/when Monica writes me back

When Ariadne says this, she seems to be implying that she is NOT giving up her spot, especially since she says "come with us".

It might be the Closing Ceremonies not the Opening Ceremonies ....

I searched through the Codex, but so far I can't find such descriptions about opening ceremonies.

Markus posted an explanation. Here is the translation:

Markus wrote:

Well, I think I have to explain one or more issues. I have told the truth - I woke up with amnesia like the other athletes. Now I know (not 100% but it seems to be true) that I am not the original Thumos.
What I have understood from Ariadne's blog is that Theo has sent me indtead of Mauritz into this world. How this has happend - well, that doesn't matter and I can't help you. Like I said, I woke up with amnesia like the others.
I also know that many of you do not trust me and I can understand. But you have to know that it is really hard for me. I woke up alone, I thought I was nobody and than I have found the others. Ariadne, Diego, Lucie, Noriko, Monica, Meihui, Larissa, you are all I have. When I recognized that I am not the true Thumos, it felt like a big part of my life was torn out of me. I know that I should be on Theo's side but simultanously I do not know why. I have lost my memories and my identiy and that is the reason why it doesn't matter what happened in my past. I am one of the allies. Perhaps I am not the "true" Thumos but I have gone through the same things like you, I have made the same experiences.
I need you. Without you... You are my friends, without you I am nothing. And you need me. Without Thumos you are lost. And I am Thumos, 100%. We are not neccessarily born as Sofia or Sophrosune. Our strengths are a result of the things we experienced. And I have lived and will live always as Thumos.
Markus

The real question here is from the end of the blog entry:

Ariadne wrote:

Monica is sophrosune. And her great uncle knew one of the original travelers. She might not know any more than we do, but she can listen to our theories and use her strength to help us judge the situation. If you have ideas for who to trust and what to do about Kentaro and Markus, write her at monica.alt77SPLATgmail.com.

So, thinking about this, I read the whole Codex, but Jorge is the only one who stood out to me.

There's a part that says he's from a Gaea world like our own, but then just after they talk about how if the strengths aren't enough, you could end up in a similar world, but not your original one... your family would be there but not exactly how you remembered them (kind of like Back to the Future, I guess).

It also mentioned that there's a yes/no branching from accepting the mission, so at first i was thinking, maybe he's from a 'yes' branch, but this particular Gaea world is the 'no'... although i decided against that in the end because it seems improbable that the 'no' option would also be the world to which someone is being sent. (If he'd said 'yes' would he just walk down the street or something? Wouldn't someone have recognized him? etc.)

But sapagoo said that Gaea worlds aren't too common in the first place, so I was thinking...maybe Monica's uncle is somehow related, in another universe, to Jorge? That could be why he trusted him with a piece of the codex, beyond just him having helped out when he had amnesia.

Being relatives might be a stretch but I definitely think that there is some deeper connection happening, and that Jorge might have been responsible for starting TheO... no idea why, yet.

Anyway, I wrote that to Monica and here's the reply I got:

Monica wrote:
Hola Laura,

Hello Laura,

thank you very much for your reflection. I find it very interesting and I must confess that I have chills. I think it has brought a hint disturbing because it is something that differentiates Jorge of the other 6. Can you think of a concept by which someone in that situation I would like to establish Theo? What happens is you some idea about any clue that could search the office of my uncle grandfather? I do not know if something else is there to look for ...

I wrote a post on my blog summarizing the ideas that people sent me, if it can help you.

Thank you for your help!

Monica

Still a lot to consider but I am intrigued. Now to read her blog entry... (thanks mrj!)

I was just reading it myself, so you can probably find it now.
She sums up ideas people have sent her and says she wants to mediate with Markus- I think.

She replied to my e-mail with a similar message as yours.

I had a similar reply too.
I must say that the idea of Jorge being Monica's relative in his own world, but just her great grandfather's friend in this one seems interesting.

Do you need a full translation of Monica's post?
