For Those Of You Using Boardzero...

Boardzero has lost all of its forums. They had a 'catastrophic hardware failure'. I was using their boards for months, to create my ARG, and its all gone, everything. I am very unhappy, because a lot of time and effort went into that, and now its all wiped out.

The following is the message they give you when you try and access your now-extinct website:

"Many of our old forum users are signing in to find that their forums are missing. Some time last week, a catastrophic hardware failure caused the loss of our forum databases. Initially thinking we could rely on our backup data, the drive crash had corrupted our backup data over time to the point it was unusable. Unfortunately, we cannot recover your forums or posts from Board Zero 2.0. For that we are truly sorry, many great forums were lost. However, many of our larger forums have recovered, and have rebounded."

And this is my email to them:

" My name is Vecheeso. I have been using your boards since March of this year.
I have thus far been pleased with it, and wanted to continue using your website.
And now, you have a 'catastrophic hardware failure'? You are a message board system, you are supposed to have backups, of backups, of backups.
As a forum, you are not allowed the luxury of having such failures. People use forums so they dont have to copy and paste everything, and keep in touch with large teams around the world, like myself.
This is like Starbucks saying that they ran out of coffee, not that the world ran out of coffee, just them.
This is bullshit, I have been working on an Alternate Reality Game for months now, with a large team, and now all of our hard work, videos, links, ideas, everything is gone, because you werent smart enough to use a server system that would allow for multiple backups among multiple machines.
You can be assured that the entire Alternate Reality Game community will no longer be using your website (all 20,000+ of us).
I hope you spent a lot of money in upgrading to 3.0, because all the people who used your forums before, I am sure, will not return.
Good luck with your epic fail company...

-A Really Pissed Off User"

If any of you are using/thinking of using this system, I, personally, do not recommend it.

*EDIT* I was going to start backing up my files today since its the first 'official' day of my ARG being on hold, though, its been in stasis for a week or more now. I do realize this is also my fault for not backing my files up, so, please, do not come at me with "well its your fault for not backing everything up with a wiki, or something else, noob"

Oh goodness, that must be so frustrating. I lost a couple of months' worth on one of my boards recently, but nothing quite so catastrophic. You have my sympathy. Sad

Wait, they were backing up to the same hard drive on which the DB was hosted? WTF.

yeah, it's pretty ridiculous. its unfortunate that you cant learn a company/group's incompetance until they eff something up.
well, the good news is that the ARG is near-indefinately postponed. and I have really good memory, so, maybe down the line, I can work with a group who has great ARG-making experience, and try and create this thing again.

That is quite a WTF.

Have these people heard the words "off-site backup"?

Not only can something like that put them completely out of business, but that is a major lawsuit waiting to happen there, if you ask me.

Sorry to hear that; I can imagine your pain and frustration.

It sounds like either they were backing up on the same drive array or volume they hosted the 'original' DB on, or they had a SINGLE backup drive array or volume that was being overwritten with a SINGLE backup instance. If they didn't catch the early signs of corruption and the backups began to be infested with the same bad data issues as the main DB, it clearly demonstrates how ragingly stupid that is for anyone providing a service - even a 'free' one in this day and age. Can you imagine if Google lost all of your emails or Picasa albums because of a similar failure? Would you ever consider paying such an enterprise to do anything from any position (advertiser, user, partner)?

Amateur attitude yields amateur results.
