Re: decoy message

Just a thought...

If luck is with us, we think that there might be four more of these messages, right? And we don't want TheO tipped off in such a way that the ring-keepers will stop leaving them on the voice-mail. So what about leaving the directions exactly as they are -- leading to the same location -- but changing the "password" to something completely unsolvable? That way, whomever TheO sends to collect the ring will never get it, because they'll never have the correct password (and also because we'll have collected it already, but the ring-keeper surely won't say anything about that to someone who doesn't have the real password).

One advantage of keeping the real location is that, if there are any telltale signs -- such as who the ring-keeper is or what he/she wears or something like that -- those signs will all be present. TheO will know that the location is correct, and just think that the clues for the password are too obscure or something. Even if TheO contacts Dewaldewaard, he'll confirm that the location is exactly where he left the ring -- and I doubt that he'd discuss the real password with just anyone who called him claiming to be a member of TheO. With luck, TheO will waste a lot of time trying to figure out the password, allowing us time to pull the same stunt with the other four rings. (We hope.)

The best lie is 90% truth.

That's a pretty good suggestion, Shad0. This would definitely sort out the problem some of our fellows brought up earlier about finding similar landmarks in other areas after relocating a retrieval spot. And as you said, wouldn't make The0 wonder too much about what's happening. Because if they would, and put 2 and 2 together, James might turn up being in quite the uncomfortable spot.

Good and logical thinking & convincing argumentation, Shad0!

Suggestions on how we could edit the password clues?

How about this?

OMG! Shocked Silly I have been away from internet-capable computers for a couple of days. This is great!

Thanks to Ariock and hrmpita - me and mr.judkins will try to get to the Mark Hutchins Gallery before 5:30pm on Tuesday.
Will also give them a call and see if I can get any clues as to whether they've got it. Wink The Mark Hutchins Gallery does look like the most likely option.

In other news, how the heck did The O find out about that gallery?! It's not on google maps, and not even on the first page of google search results for Wellington Galleries. They clearly don't know Wellington very well, or they'd know that the Tattoo Museum has been closed for over two years and is now a car valet! The Mark Hutchins is a relatively little known gallery, down a wee alley. Ok, rant over.

Angle seems more probable. Could the speaker be saying a number anywhere before the word Zeus? (apart from the three and the 5.51)

FWIW, I rechecked the message about 200 times, but I'm fairly sure I don't hear anything else than "angle of the Zeus 12" bit.

I was also wondering if the name of the agent matters, because "Dewaldewaard" (or De Waldewaard perhaps) isn't exactly a name I have ever heard before, but I just can't quite make out what he's saying.

Oh, and if needed, I'd be more than willing to record a decoy message if that helps you guys out!

My head's a bit exploded at the moment (just came back from a week-long vacation, during which I had access to a computer for maybe three days >_<).
Is this in the wiki yet? If not, can someone please put it in there, so that I can read this in layman's terms....

Well, _june and I decided to check out the Mark Hutchins Gallery today and peer in the windows - even though it wouldn't be open again til Tuesday.

As we were doing so, a man (who I imagine was Mark) waved us over to the entry, and opened up for us. He said they were just wrapping some stuff up in the storage area, and to feel free to have a look around.

The current exhibition opened last night, and features both paintings and sculptures made mostly out of metal - like these:

As we weren't really meant to be there til Tuesday, we didn't ask any questions about it - but a combination of the appropriately themed exhibition, and the smug knowing look on "Mark's" face leave us fairly certain there may indeed be an extra piece on display come tuesday...

Watch this space. Very Happy

Hey, I just noticed I made a slight error in the translation when I read through it on the wiki. A small bit is missing:

Quote:
This is Theo agent Dewaldewaard with a report about the transport of La Sesa Ringo, ring number one. The former location of number One was 35,402 stadia in the direction of Hestia 12 from Omphalos number 8. From there, I have shifted the ring 13,550 stadia in the direction of Hestia 7.8. From next Tuesday the ring will be hidden in clear daylight in a galery in the center of a three circuit left-running labyrinth with a width of 5.51 stadia, where the entrance of the labyrinth falls together with the Tattoo Museum and the cross (??) of the labyrinth is located under a corner* of Zeus 12. When you pick up the ring for its next destination, you have to give the ringkeeper a password.

Sorry Embarassed. I'm assuming that doesn't change things too much though?

Don't worry about it, Giskard, that's not a crucial bit, but thanks for the addition Smile.

Mail from Eli:

Quote:
Hi Canzonett,

I think that the wisest choice would be to have a native dutch speaker
leave a decoy message. Hopefully your friend Giskard can help out
with this. I must say I'm really intrigued with the implications
here.

It sounds like James is pretty desperate to get that decoy message in
place, so we should focus on that for the time being.

Beyond that, what do you make of the potential location of the ring?
I think you all have reasoned out the correct password (but I suppose
we'll see what the ring keepers say for final proof).

-Eli
