New Ariadne Blog Post 6/26
A Mystery Ally?

Ariadne tweeted/posted regarding an email both her and Eli received from someone who claims to have met "someone like her" in the past and wants to help:

Quote:
A new ally? Read this Mystery Message!!
I can't wait to finally meet some of you at the lost sport training event in London this Sunday. There are already over 120 athletes signed up... I hope we can start to get our 7-circuit times closer to the other worlds'!! They're racing the 7-circuit a full minute faster than we are!! Has anyone gotten under 1:30 yet?

In the meantime, Eli and I both received very curious messages... thought you guys might have some ideas about it. Do we have a new ally? If so, I'm excited! But who is this mystery person?? We definitely need help getting our fastest times faster...

Dear Ariadne,

You've never met me, but I met someone like you many years ago, just once, but it was one of the strangest conversations I've ever had. She didn't know as much as you do. She only knew she had to be in Los Angeles that year, and that she had a mission she couldn't complete alone. I don't think she got any further than that, and I didn't know enough to help her then. I had my own race to run.

To be honest, I forgot all about her. But seeing your "Hello world" video, and watching your "lost sport" videos, I remembered. And I think I finally understand. I think there have been athletes like you for many, many years, playing on the sidelines of the Games. I think many Olympic athletes such as myself have met many Olympic travelers such as yourself. But who knows if any of us every really understood that your games were as important as ours.

Well, I can't make sense of it all. But I have a degree in physics, and the lore of the athletic multiverse intrigues me. The physics does make sense. It works. The codex is a strange text, but a logical one.

I would like to help you and your friends.

I know what it feels like to run for the gold. I know how to focus in the heat of competition. I know how to win against the best of the best.

If you could use the help of an Olympic champion, I am here to play with you.

-E.

Eli's was almost identical.

The writer's email address is ftwmcdSPLATgmail.com. Who could it be? A real Olympic champion, do you think?

Anyone want to chat him up and find out more?

Ariock has an excellent guess as to whom this mystery athlete might be... but I'll let him post his spec on that Smile

Anyway, being a good Chariton, I emailed:

Quote:
Hi there,

My name is Celina and I'm trying to help Ariadne and the other Lost Athletes complete their mission and get home. When Ariadne posted your incredible email about having met another Lost Athlete and your offer of help, I was greatly intrigued - and of course, we can *all* use some help!

A couple of assumptions.... from your email it seems to me that you were an Olympic Athlete, and it seems you met the other Lost one in Los Angeles. The last Olympics in Los Angeles was in 1984 (I was there!). I also gather that you are a track and field athlete since you were "running your own race".

Were you a track and field athlete in the 1984 Los Angles Olympics?

I look forward to hearing more from you and your experiences with the previous Lost Athlete...

Celina

Almost immediately, I received an answer:

Quote:
Congratulations. If you're reading this email, then you're a part of
the mission to win gold in the lost sport.

I've never competed in the multiverse Olympiad. But I have competed in
the Olympics. And I've won gold more than once.

I want to help team agonthetai win gold in 2008.

I might not be a champion labyrinth runner, but I can tell you exactly
what it feels like to run for the gold with everything on the line. I
can help you prepare mentally, to prepare for the moment that will
only happen once. I can tell you what it feels like to compete
athletically against the best of the best.

I'm here to help, to support team agonothetai.

I'll keep my identity secret for now. Maybe if we get to know each
other better, I can say more.

Tell me your strengths, and which city team you're training with.
Let's make a plan for your team to win gold in August.

E.

P.S. I'm chariton and thumos.

A bit of a spoiler, so I'll hide it - the email was from:

Exciting! Thoughts?

My main reaction at this point is to the e-mail address: ftwmcdSPLATgmail.com.

FTW is a "leet speek" abbreviation for "for the win". If you're not familiar with it, a sample usage could be, oh, I dunno, "Sunny skies for the win!" (a wish for good weather during Saturday's walk-and-drive of the Toronto omphalabyrinth...I can't think of a really good usage example right now, sorry Razz). This person's e-mail response to Celina shows that this choice of screen name is appropriate for this person because they see their help as being "for the win"...i.e., the person thinks they can help us win multiverse Olympic gold, which perhaps we couldn't do without his/her help.

Then there is the second part of the e-mail address: "mcd". Well, we all know McDonald's is an official sponsor. Seems kind of cheesy to put it in the e-mail address without better reason, though.

I was going to try to do some research, but I'll wait to see what Ariock has to say first Smile.

Well, I didn't want to spoil it for people who might want to research it. I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think the clues point to:

Edwin Moses

That's what I would have suggested as well. It fits - even the degree in physics ...

I think we can be reasonably shure that that guess is correct since he apeared in the Mc Donalds Press Confrence yesterday. Only question now is what does it mean... and because I'm the paranoid type do we trust him? (Seems a bit too good to be true an Olympic athlete joining us just weeks before the Olympics kick off, especially considering all the Theo activity)
Just a thought...

My question is...is this reveal of who the mystery blogger is considered to be IG, seeing as it was done in a very META way? Can we now write to him saying, "Hi, Edwin, thanks for joining us", or should we still act as if we're trying to figure out who he is???

There was enough information IG for ariock to identify him before the press conference, so I'd say you can. [/supposition]
