I also like the cyberpunkish idea...There was talk about making Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon into a movie, but who knows...
Now that id love to see!
Diamond age, another or Neal Stephenson's books could make a great ARG

An mspaint adventures ARG would be great, too.

I really would like to see ARG based on James Bond. You could get text messages from MI6, have real-life meetings with the charaters (one-to-ones of course),dead-drops and fake company websites. And occasionally you would get a phone call from Judi Dench.

Hahaha, that cracked me up.
I would indeed love to see a Death Note ARG as well. Or maybe one based on The Dark Tower...

I've been trying to figure out a way to do a Dark Tower ARG and I came up with the idea that it could be from the point of view of the Writer (Stephen King). He's confused as to why these strange things are happening to him and the story gets told as he's writing it blah blah blah....that's as far as I got.

I'm with Fencer and Nico. Primarily because I'd thought about a Dark Tower ARG as well.
A hint to something I was thinking about.

A few years ago there were some Dark Tower-centric trails that were fun at the beginning, but fizzled:
Stephen King/Dark Tower ARG?
Another "Dark Tower" fake website
The potential was definitely there...

This PA strip makes a good point. ARGs are getting to be known as just a mechanism for marketing something else. Most everyone in this thread has suggested ideas for ARGs that are based on an existing IP franchise. I was hoping to see people's ideas for what they'd like to see an ARG based on from a unique storyline perspective. Why do ARGs have to be promoting another product - why can't they be the product?

RemixFiction: that's because the initial post limited the discussion to already existing IP.

There's ARGs out there that have been for their own sake.
But, I mean, if you go by the idea that the Beast was the first ARG (which is another discussion, but let's just say it is) - it was to promote a movie, A.I.
There's nothing stopping ARGs from being art for art's sake (well, except for funding, natch), but it's not like the precedent wasn't set from Day One.

Thing is that the only ARGs that are reported about by the press are the ones that try to "sell" a product.
Only once in a blue moon will you hear the press talk about an "art" ARG.

I think that comment is a little disingenuous: the press cover ARGs that "sell" products because they're proactive in reaching the media. How many grassroots / "art" ARGs think to send out press releases or clue media in on events? If my assumption that this happens rarely is incorrect, feel free to correct me.
To offer a non-IP based wishlist, I'm still waiting for an ARG that's primarily a love story / romance.
