So yep I don't know anyone who could collect the art but whoever does needs to be claim to be the "official ring collector" and said THERMANTIA in exactly the way she wants to hear it. It might even be worth just spelling it from the start so theres no mistake on either end. I was going to send in some random strangers tomorrow, but if we can get a little group to meet next door at the cafe, we could prepare our master plans.

By the way shall I upload the photos I have?

They are being harsh about collecting this ring, to be sure. It must be frustrating to finally find it, but not actually GET it. Sad

The question is, what IS the pronunciation she wants to hear?

Chippy says he is going to try tomorrow. If he goes in alone, with only his confidence and natural good looks (no cell phone, notes, or anything), he should be successful.

Also, yes, please upload your photos. Thanks for all your hard work! Smile

Whoah! Sorry to hear this has been such a mission, Team Manchester. Well done for actually locating the ring's location cubicgarden - without all your efforts we wouldn't even be this far!

One thought for Chippy - you might want to dress suitably for collecting a "Very Expensive" piece of artwork... any upmarket suit options in the closet? Make sure someone gets a good photo of the outfit. Wink

I'll have to fight the moths to get it back... Wink

Could the pronunciation be "thur-man-sha" instead of "...-tee-uh"? "...sha" was my first thought of the pronunciation.

yes I was actually going to suggest to anyone else that they wear something smart.

I had my motorcycle jacket on with a T-shirt and to be fair looked very warm in the jacket, so sweating a little. Its a shame because the other two days I had a shirt and looked more professional.

I wont lie, it is frustrating that this woman wouldn't give me the ring after I found it. I was perfectly nice to her even after she refused and never raised my voice to her once. I even tried to explain the whole reason why we were there and she kept interrupting saying she didn't care and it made no difference.

Any I've started uploading the pictures to Flickr, so I'll post them up in the next post.

Wow- but how are TheO operatives supposed to look and behave in art galleries?? Our only examples of looking and acting like loyal TheO ops seem to be dying your hair red orange like Markus or raving like Kentara. . . ? Sorry you ran into such difficulty.

They certainly have a tough time spelling sculpture. Sheesh.

Also, 1920s not 1920's.

"Its origins and purpose are unknown."

Art has a purpose? Wink

art has all manner of purpose, but do you think that messed up spelling has purpose? Is there a message? Because that's an awful lot of messed up going on.

Not sure what time chippy's heading out, but I wanted to wish all of you in Manchester the best of luck!

I'm at -6 GMT, so hopefully by the time I'm up, there'll be some gallery action. Smile

p.s. Don't forget to Twitter and photograph! Wink

Oh dear - English pronuntiation of Greek or Latin words, a difficult chapter. Personally, I'd opt for "-tee-uh", since it's closer to the original pronuntiation.

How to act as a convincing TheOrist?
Walk straight into the gallery.
Look serious.
Speak clearly and confidently, don't flounce or fidget.
Wear dark sunglasses?
Business attire?
Be cool - as if you were a member of the Men in Black.
Wink

I hope everything will be fine for Team Manchester today.
I'm looking forward to seeing the detals of the third ring.

By the way, Thermantia is pronounced as Te-ru-man-ti-a in Japan, which might have something to do with Latin pronunciation, where there's no "th"-sound.

Just a little tip from a spanish speaker (which supposedly sounds a bit like latin). Here's a latin pronunciation guide:
http://www.leatherheadcatholics.org.uk/LatinSounds.shtml

An my take at Thermantia would be:
Th as in THomas (that is a T sound, not like a D)
E as in rEd (not ee, but spanish e)
R and M are no problem
A as in fAther (that's spanish A)
N no problem
TI like tee (that's a T sound and an spanish I)
A again as in fAther

As unagi said, japanese pronunciation seems quite close to latin one, only taking away that u in ru (as all their syllables finish with a vocal or n)

I'll keep an eye on cubicgarden's twitter, and post here for those watching at home.
Looks like chippy, cubicgarden, and davemee are all meeting at "love saves the day" cafe at 4pm local, which is 11am EDT, in about 18 minutes.

UPDATE #1: He's running late.
Quote:
Going to be late for operation "take the 3rd ring" but fear not I'll be in love saves the day from 4:15pm. Dress smart if you can
