I've added a little functionality to the chat page so that you can link directly to a default channel of your choice, if you're making a game resource or something. Unsupported or missing channel parameters will default to #unfiction. Currently supported channels are:

#Unfiction: http://www.unfiction.com/chat/ or http://www.unfiction.com/chat/?chan=unfiction
#Syzygy: http://www.unfiction.com/chat/?chan=syzygy
#Pareidolia: http://www.unfiction.com/chat/?chan=pareidolia
#JMX: http://www.unfiction.com/chat/?chan=jmx
#Matrix: http://www.unfiction.com/chat/?chan=matrix
#Acheron: http://www.unfiction.com/chat/?chan=acheron

Working for me and I don't remember banning anyone recently. What kind of error are you getting?

Just a note, the applet does seem to hang in certain Firefox browser configurations. It works fine for me on one computer, but hangs on another, both using Firefox. Can't tell what's different, so I can't fix it, heh.

*shrug*

Poop. I was just about to ask if there was a way to make the applet work in Firefox. *starts blindly changing configurations*

Hm...

I am using IE. I get the following in the java window after hitting the connect button for any of the servers:
Welcome to Unfiction IRC chat!
Connecting to the server, please wait ...
Unable to connect to server.

The last two lines are repeated 10 times. I get the same kind of thing when I have tried connecting via Trillian too. With trillian, connecting to 69.28.250.135:6667, I get:

[17:45] *** Error while connecting (Error Code: 0). Disconnecting.
[17:45] *** Reconnecting to IRC as "Ariock|at_Work".
[17:45] *** Will attempt 0 connections with 0 second intervals.
[17:45] *** Error while connecting (Error Code: 10053). Disconnecting.

And this is from home or the office. Weird.

10053 is a winsock error, "software caused connection abort". (Yes, I'm a geek Razz) This probably means you're not geting a proper TCP handshake. Not sure what to recomend other then disabling any firewalls you have active.

It doesn't work so good on Firefox. Just download Chatzilla, which works fine. Hey, if I could figure it out, so can any of you.

It may be a good idea to add the chat page to "trusted sites" list..

awe - I've had this issue before - my work computer doesn't allow the java chats - it's a port issue. You can modify the firewall or allow the port - I can't remember which one is the default, perhaps spacebass can fill you in on that

[edit]
-- here's the default port 6667

I assume you're using a router, I know the utorrent program has a nice port forwarded assistance on it, though I'm sure you can google port forwarding to find out how to allow your router to accept the 6667 port.
Many work computers you won't be able to do this without a network administrator account.

neatness rocks, clutter sucks
a little long but a necessary read

Please don't respond to every post that's made unless you have relevant information to share about the game in question. Especially silly little comments like, "ooh, i saw that too." These are just waste of space and create confusion for later stages of the game. If you need to ask another player a question then use the little button at the bottom of the post that's labeled "pm" for private message that way valuable space isn't wasted asking irrelevant questions. However, if the question is related to the overall game and the topic being discussed then please ask in the thread as other players are probably wondering the same thing too.

Why do I ask this? Because, for one, it messes up the threads and makes it hard to find the important information especially for those who write the story-so-far and for those who report on the game. And it takes all the fun out of playing when you have to wade through pages of irrelevant information just to find that one piece of important information you need later in the game. Heck even this post is wasting valuable space but I'm trying to help others to make sense of the whys and what fors. I for one know that if the chatter continues in any of the games I look at from now on then I simply will not play them. Because, for one thing, I refuse to wade through a ton of #### to get to the goodies again.

Why am I posting in this thread for the java chat? Well, because in chat is where the chatter belongs. And if you are new to the forums then it is time to get acquainted with it.

So for every one's sake go here if you don't have an irc client http://www.unfiction.com/chat/
  • Enter you nickname
  • Enter the name of the channel (room) you want to enter, several rooms are listed there or go to the default channel #unfiction and anyone there will be glad to help you
  • The other settings should work fine as preset, but if you have a problem try changing the port number. Default is 6667 but any number from 6660 to 6669 will work.

If you have your own irc client then here are a list of servers you can use to get to the channels for our games:

  • irc.chat-solutions.org
  • riprock.chat-solutions.org
  • irc.chat-solutions.co.uk
  • cristal.chat-solutions.org <-- see below, this no longer works
  • foshizzle.chat-solutions.org
  • radiant.chat-solutions.org <-- new added early 2007
  • 69.28.250.135
  • 217.160.211.173
  • 69.28.250.199
  • 69.80.195.68 <-- new added early 2007

after you are logged on to the server then just type /join #nameofchannel for example to join #unfiction type /join #unfiction.

Currently I have a channel (room) registered for the arg Free! Psychic Readings but it doesn't get used much so feel free to jump in there to discuss any game listed in news and rumors or args with potential or any game that doesn't have it's own channel yet. And when Free! Psychic Readings ends we will call the channel (room) Flapper! for Pregames and Rumors! Or something like that, suggestions are welcomed.

So join #F!PR! now and chat til your heart is content and help keep the threads clean so if the rumor / potential turns out to be an actual arg the trail-head want be so hard to follow for players who join the game a little late. Seriously, let's try to keep the forum threads easy to read and find info. General chat should be taken to chat or send Private Messages. The forums should be used only for information / character interaction / speculation / meta / puzzles / solutions that way things will be easier to find and the threads want get so long with unnecessary info.

Don't let a good game get spoiled by being bogged down with unnecessary information which could cause people to lose interest. And besides, things get solved a lot faster in chat and we can spec as much as we want.

Last but not least, why did i create this post? So that i don't have to type the same info over and over wasting valuable thread space in other words defeating the purpose of this post. This way when a thread starts to become too cluttered with chatter I will simply point everyone to this post and enough said.

For an example I will use the arg Ny Takma. While in pregame the trail-head became 26 pages long with nonsense and all the relevant information in there fit into a post no bigger than the one you are reading now. And it was very time consuming and frustrating to read through all the gobbledygook to pull out all that was important so that we never had to look there again. Believe me that was the last place you wanted to look for information. So don't let the beginning of your arg end up like that, use the chat.

And don't be afraid to ask, in a pm or chat, any of us for help. If we know the answer we will gladly help. If we don't we can usually find someone who does.

Edited to correct what Phaedra said about cristal.chat-solutions.org. sorry it took so long but I got so busy for awhile.

Re: neatness rocks, clutter sucks

Okay, a lot of the points you make are good ones, and certainly attempts to keep the noise-to-signal ratio as low as possible are useful, but...

I'm not sure I agree that any "irrelevant" chatter should be confined to chat or to PM.

First, sometimes it's hard to say what's relevant. Second, off-topic chatter is annoying if there's too much of it, but in limited quantities it helps the community bond and keeps things casual. But most importantly, not everyone has time to hang out in chat, and not everyone can access it from school or work. During Last Call Poker, a lot of people who couldn't use chat felt left out because so much of the discussion was confined to chat, for example.

What takes place in chat is transitory, and only aids the people who are in the chat channel at that precise moment.

What happens on the forum is permanent, and there for all the world to see.

Chat is a pretty exclusive medium, whereas forum posts are inclusive.

ETA: cristal.chat-solutions.org is no longer active, so please don't attempt to use that server.

I just want to add that the reason the original Ny Takma thread got so long was mainly that we were still in News and Rumors and couldn't spread out. We got much more organized in ARGs with Potential, especially when we got a wiki .

And wrt to chat, I agree that too much chatter can crowd out the useful info in a thread, but it's pretty easy to skim through chatter, in my experience. I think it's more important to foster openness and casualness, and much that is productive like speculation or strategizing comes about from casual conversation. Basically, I don't think anyone should be in a position where they refrain from posting because they're afraid someone else might think their comments are "chatter." Conversely, no one should feel left out of a community because they can't or don't IRC. So it's a balance between two extremes, but I think ideally anyone posting in a community like this one should be able to figure out how to contribute effectively to the conversation pretty quickly.
