[City Labyrinth] Los Angeles, CA
placeholder

Trackstick has arrived safely. Labyrinth design is more annoying than I had anticipated, but I don't want L.A. to be the only omph knot that doesn't have a dedicated thread, so...

Have you already posted a labyrinth proposal somewhere? I have the vague feeling that I have seen one for LA, but am not quite certain where and when. In case you already have a first sketch, no matter how rough or impossible or confused it looks - post it here! Maybe someone else comes up with an excellent idea that solves some of your problems (the "annoying" bits) ...

There's a design up on Ariadne's forums that looks reasonable. I commented on it over there.

Re: proposal

Link is here. One concern I see is that Eli Hunt specifically said the distances between the circuits should be uniform, and this proposal has a lot of variation.

(Of course, I've got a lot of nerve criticizing, since I haven't yet done one myself...)

I put in bold a couple of things I think are important to creating a city sized labyrinth.

Eli Hunt wrote:
Regarding labyrinth design:

Concentricity is the primary requirement of all labyrinth design. The center of the labyrinth must be as close to the true center as possible, geographically. It cannot be "off center" - to the far top, bottom, right, or left of the overall design.

Furthermore, the rings must be of uniform width, or at least very close to uniform width. The path should not get wider and narrower as it twists and turns.

Perfect symmetry, on the other hand, is not a requirement, although it is certainly considered the hallmark of a powerful labyrinth. It is something I think our designs should aspire to, within the limitations of urban space.

I am not familiar enough with Los Angeles to form an opinion about that particular omphalabyrinth, but I don't think it is necessary to make the width PERFECTLY uniform. Urban space includes streets ending and beginning again, with an impassable middle section (even if one walks) for a block or so, for instance, so that traveling up the next street is the only viable option. One way streets, if the distance is far, is also an obstacle at times, but can be easily remedied by using the next street, which is usually one way in the other direction.

Therefore, sometimes your path will be one block wide and sometimes it may have to be two or three blocks wide, just to make it even possible. I tried, in my latest attempt for San Francisco, to make it as symmetrical as possible (e.g., if I needed to make the width two blocks wide in the south section, I tried to mirror that in the north section).

I certainly hope that perfectly uniform width isn't going to make my second attempt unusable. That would make me sad. Sad

Re: proposal

If it's any consolation, once I finally got the TrackStick software installed and tested it I, too, had to discard what I'd been working on for downtown Los Angeles, due to being surrounded those obnoxious tall buildings...

Re: [City Labyrinth] Los Angeles, CA
I continue to suck

I finally managed to cobble together a clumsy five-circuit labyrinth for Los Angeles. Upon doing a little research, it turns out that I've thoughtfully placed it right smack in the middle of a lovely little area commonly known as South Central.

Cursing Dunce Bang Head

So, umm, back to the drawing board...

Does that mean you don't want to drive up from San Diego to join us?

Eli Hunt wrote:
This is most certainly an acceptable labyrinth design!

Do be safe and do be careful. If you can replicate this design, or
close to it, in another neighborhood, then by all means follow that
path. You are an important part of team agonothetai, you must stay
safe!

Sincerely yours,

Eli Hunt

Oh I'll be there even *if* it's in South Central Very Happy I used to drive an airport shuttle through that neighborhood, even right after the riots... I think I can take a couple hours there to Save The World(s) Very Happy

Those all look like good labyrinths. Thank you very much. I'm still hoping to craft a significantly larger one to maximize the boost to the Omph strength, but if I get really stuck then any of these should do.

Hey, celina63: If you were serious about driving all the way up here, what does your Sunday look like? HitsHerMark, how about you? And I'll also ask Larissa if she's available and wants to join us. (For that matter, anyone who feels like schlepping to L.A. should feel free to join!)
