CA caravan? I'm in. Also carpooling is a good thing (that's more for us SF folks though).

I had suggested carpooling but my girlfriend reminded me that we are driving a Jetta. Not the most comfy car in the world for an 8 hour ride.

No. I can assure you, no.

I know. I wasn't serious (God, at least I hope that's not the case!). Smile

Still trying to convince the wife. It's amazing how I'm in the industry and still can't explain it adequataely to the family. And, yes, I've used all the advertising/marketing buzz words I could think of.

So who do I have to bribe to have it in Miami next year? I'll take the executive committee to South Beach, I promise! Very Happy

You'll have to fight Toronto for it Catfight!

re: Caravan - is this for during ARGfest, or is this in refernce to the group going from Portland to San Diego? (which I'd assume would be discussed in the other thread, in which case it's not the latter but the former and I've answered my own question?)

I was talking about a bunch of us driving at the same time up to Portland in an effort to make the drive more fun and the rest stops more bearable.

Therein is my disadvantage... Sure, I beat you as far as "cool things to do" down here, but you have strength in numbers up there. I am all alone down here, the sole representative of South Florida.

ACTUALLY, the "cool things to do" in FL are all SUPER expensive, and not at all beat out the cool things to do in Toronto.

We had a great time in Orlando 2003, but yeah it was a bit expensive.

Let's just concentration on 2009 right now and worry about next year later!

Assuming everyone in CA plans to get to Portland at approximately the same time, and that the ideal path is via I-5, I think having a caravan meet-up in Sacramento of Sac/LA/SD/SF people would be a good idea. Let me talk with some of the SF locals and figure out when we want to get up there. Obviously, if you have suggestions, please let me know.

My suggestion is meeting in Sacramento is impractical if one is driving from the Bay Area, since you want to take 80 to 505 to 5. Actually, that is more of a comment than a suggestion. The drive on the I-5 route from SF to Portland is approximately 12 hours (I am including gas and meal stops).

Is there any reason this caravan would have to make it's overall starting point in only one city, and rendezvous in a city? The more relatively rural a rallying point, the less likely that when you set off you'll have to battle traffic to keep together. I'd suggest that the Bay Area contingent meet and proceed as a group from some point of convenience for them, and the rest of the group from south and central California meet somewhere proximal to Sacto. You can then rendezvous at some point near or just north of the I-505 and I-5 junction.

Another thing, how many of you have actually driven this stretch of road? It'd be wise to calculate stops in advance to be most effective, more especially if the group or number of cars gets greater than 3. There will be some very long stretches of basically nothing, especially once you get north of Redding. From Grants Pass to Albany in Oregon, there are vast stretches of road with very few effective stops.

Is the plan to make the drive in one day? If so, that'll be a VERY long day. The worst part of that idea is also that you'd likely be leaving at morning rush time for SF and Sacto, and reach Portland in the evening rush. I'm guessing this trip would be on Thursday the 16th, and you'd all be checking into your accommodations that evening. So long as you reserve a room, you may wish to stop and eat dinner just before entering Portland, to avoid said rush. (There are some pretty decent places to eat just south of the Portland area, so you wouldn't just be subjected to McDonalds.)

If you are wondering, yes - I've done my share of time on road trips.

I was thinking of a central meeting point anyways, not Sacramento. That's where I'll be starting from. But yes, we could meet somewhere on I-5 and go from there.

The road trip according to Google is 8 hours. The price of gas is still cheaper than a plan ticket according to Southwest unless you guys know something I don't. Plus once we are there it would be more convenient to have a vehicle to move around me thinks.

Again, this is all food for thought. If we can somehow score cheap airline tickets this could all change.

Dont know if it will help but, Cheaptickets.com usually has fair prices.... and they show all the airlines and what they are offereing on said dates.

I've done it, but it is in no way a fun trip that way. In fact, it's quite painful and possibly a little dangerous if you don't swap drivers part-way through because of fatigue.

The best option would be to stop overnight somewhere near the border (Ashland is a good place for that), wake up early the next day, and drive the remainder in the morning.

I've driven L.A. to Seattle alone many times and it's about 17 hours straight through. I'm sure multiple drivers can handle 14-15 hours. It will just be very crampy. If some S.D. folks want to drive/train up here to L.A. we could drive up together to the meet spot in Sacramento. If gas is divided equally, it will be WAY cheaper than flying.
