Trying to design my very first ARG
Grassroot, that's right ?

Hi there

Just like, i guess, every ARG player at one time or another, I feel the urge to design my own home-made ARG.

Ideas are flowing quite freely in my head and i think i have some interesting story material.

But my main concern is about the scale of it. What should be a "reasonnable" aim regarding player involvement, time span, number of riddle, enigma difficulty... You see the pattern.

I think i've got covered the "what should be in" question, but the "how much of everything" still worry me much.

Could you give me some numbers to aim for or some advices from your own PM experience ? (Maybe pointing me to actual grassroots ARG going on too)

It's hard to say. If you're grassroots and have a small story together, you can dream big but chances are you'll have a small audience.

On the contrary look at Sammeees (I totally spelled that wrong I think), a grassroots game with an amazing following so...

it all depends on the story I reckon.

it also depends on what is appropriate for your storyline. if the storyline is focused around a little kid, its highly unlikely that he would triple encrypt all his blogspots.
so, make sure your puzzles are challenging for your audience. and your audience is mostly dictated by the trailhead. who did you send you trailhead to? was it new and interesting? if you send to only a few, you will get only a few people playing, and if the few you have playing are horrible with codes, then you may have to change things up.
the way i see it, about 66% of the people who follow your ARG are lurkers. not playing, just watching the storyline unfold. and maybe only 33% will post on your ARGs thread, and maybe half that will actually advance the SL.
again this is a generalization, and there are differences and the key factors are, how many players can you handle playing your game? and that will dictate how wide a net to cast with yout trailhead.
