That sounds really good, actually, Shad0!

Do we have to get waivers from all the players shown in the videos/photos/etc.?

If we get approval from McDs for their stuff we should also get permission from them on the user stuff. Didn't we run into some unexpected use of user content by the sponsor? They claim in their info to gain rights to using our content don't they? I dunno. If we aren't selling it and it's mostly for players then I don't think there should be too many legal problems.

To clarify things, I'm afraid we will have to get permission from the legal departments of McD's before doing anything with their own material. [TIAG]In-game characters are just characters, and the people behind them are actors hired to play their part, therefore having no word on whether we can use the official material or videos or not.[/TIAG]

It goes without saying that all player footage will be submitted to the same obligation we have for official Lost Ring footage : permission from the author should, and must be obtained before it could be used on the DVD.

As for the Wiki, I'll get in touch with TheBruce about the licencing option under which it's being published. Most wikis go for some Creative Commons subset, but I haven't been able to find anything to that effect just now on the Wiki.

You could also go the Google way and just plain do it without asking anyone's permission.

It's not like we're going to sell it anyway.

It is true that we'd prolly fall under the "fair use" category anyway since, as you pointed, we're not going to sell the DVD. But it doesn't mean it's legal or polite. Besides, Google doesn't distribute content, it only links to it - therefore not infringing on anyone's right.

This all seems a tad convoluted. Let me know when to start working and what I can use once this is all sussed out.

Never mind, I'm ready. I just received this email today:

Quote:
Hi Thomas Bookmore! Hi Cineball!

I couldn't help but notice your awesome idea to put together an end-of-game DVD for The Lost Ring. Yay!

I've been chatting with my collaborators at AKQA and McDonald's, and we are really happy about your plan and can't wait to see what you make. We're especially excited about seeing the game from the players' POV – I can't tell you how much we love seeing the videos of players' missions and the montages and mash-ups of different parts of the game.

In the meantime, we want to help make it easy for you to use whatever game content you want!

So, first of all: You have official permission from me, AKQA, and McDonald's to use any game content that we have created, as long as the DVDs are not being sold. Free sharing = free to use whatever you want!

This includes:
- All The Lost Ring trailers
- All of Eli Hunt's podcasts
- Any/all of the allies' videos
- All of the Codex artifact PDFs
- Any images posted by characters to Flickr or any of the game sits
- Any/all Lost Ring logos – the ancient strengths, etc.
- Any screenshots or screencasts of any of the websites
- Any photos/videos I (Jane McGonigal) have posted of labyrinth events

If there's anything else you want to use that I haven't listed, just ask!

Second, if you have a list of digital files you want from us, we can set up a big extranet storing house of them for you. Your contact for that is Jason Welch, who I've cc"d here. He'll help coordinate.

Finally, for fun, we could pop over some easter egg files for you. For instance, I could give you one of my original design documents for the game, or audition videos from the puppet masters.

Let me know if this sounds good, and when you know what files you want from us, you can let me and Jason know.

You can also quote freely from this email if you'd like on the forums to explain to other players that you have permission, etc.

To Synchronizing the Worlds! ^_^

Jane

Things just took a very interesting turn, didn't they Wink The fact that Jane allows us to freely distribute the DVD as long as it actually is free reassures me in many ways. However, that we get to use such content means (to me at least) that we have to make sure this DVD will not just be a data dump but closer to an actual multimedia, interactive DVD. And that, my friends, is both very cool and a challenge. Would you guys agree to take on the challenge that way ? Or is it what we all had in mind from the start ?

If it is, we're going to need to (not necessarily in that order) :
- attribute tasks to each one of us, maybe even creating teams focusing on one particular set of tasks
- list content ideas on the Google Doc
- get in touch with the persons already mentioned in said Google Doc
- round up artists we know of, that'd be ok to draw for DVD menus in case we need illustrations
- round up people we know that are savvy in DVD authoring matters. i can only imagine Cineball might be the more advanced in that field, but the whole production might/will probably be too much for one person
- remain in contact as much as possible. Weekly meetings would be nice, given the size of the job.

These are all, of course, suggestions. I do not want to appear bossy in any way, this is just the way I tend to react in front of huge (but exciting) amounts of work !

Thank you all for your help in this aventure ! An of course a big thank you to Jane an her crew.

Well the actual assembly and authoring of the DVD is a one person task, but it'd be nice to have it all layed out and organized by a couple teams.

I say get any artists at our disposal, whether free hand or digtal, to start designing generic backgrounds for the main DVD feature menus. Later we can worry about bonus menus and easter egg concealment. I'm pretty confident I can do that part once it's all together.

I think our first task should be to divide up our content into different menus. Maybe an Eli menu, an Agonothetai menu, a theo menu, and a player menu? Just a few rough ideas.

Once we finalize the sections we'll need maybe we could get a list of videos we'll be using as well as other content and what order they will appear in.

I guess what I'm saying is I can do ALL of the authoring it's just the organization I'll need help with. It's easiest if all the content is centralized and we don't have to worry about transferring from large parcels of data from one person to the next. It's easiest to just have it all at my access and not bother Jane's people too much with constant pestering about access.

Wow, I just realized this will be my first borrowed footage documentary. I'm so excited! I think I'll start working on a brief introduction video to put before the first menu.

*Squee!*

ok whoah, heh, first off, is there anyone around here who has actually previously done a DVD of the scale being discussed here?
Take a deep breath... if y'all want this to be a serious production, it's gotta be built from the ground up. Any input from experienced DVD builders (as in more than just consumer-level templated DIY dvd maker experience) would be greatly helpful.

But hey, if not, it'll be a learning experience for everyone =)
I think content should be organized and laid out first, then the dvd designed around that... artists won't really know what to do unless they're given some idea of what's being done, if not specifically what screens/pages they're designing.

Perhaps come at the DVD like a very self-contained multimedia website. Perhaps skilled flash developers might have some valuable insight as well.
Just some thoughts...

I've worked with Adobe for a while now(top end professional software for PC filmmaking), so it's not new to me. I understand that we need to start with the basic structure, I was just saying we need artists on board from the start so we can work with them as the production develops. I haven't worked on this scale before, and I realize there will be snags along the way, but I'm confident in my ability.

I like the idea of incorporating flash developers. Thanks for the advice. Definitely taking it into very serious consideration.

As far as i can help, i can :

- provide every videos i made in not-too-bad quality (not DVD but better than youtube). I may be able to retrieve the working files i used and so maybe create a DVD-quality version of my quick trailer (but only maybe)

- help with some little video editing (i have the skills but not the CPU power for large scale video editing)

- provide storage space (FTP) up to 10Go

- provide some copyright-free music (because there're mine). But may not be a style you like.
