[OOG] surefitdoor.com

Hi people,

I haven't found it anywhere in uF, so I start this thread. In the facebook group "DarkUFO - ORG Group" somebody found the weird webpage:

http://www.surefitdoor.com/

It is a company producing doors. And the clues is, it claims to belong to Dharma Initiative. What do you think about? Is it ingame company? Is it Gamejack?

** Added label to title, removed "IG? Gamejack?" from title -- jamesi

I think this was found a while ago (way back in the 80 page thread), and this company is actually registered as the Dharma Initiative, and uses a very similar logo, but has nothing to do with Lost. You might want to check though as I wasn't really paying attention when they were discussing it Wink

What amazes me about this thing is that someone actually had the balls to do this. I mean come on, it's like they just said, "OK, the only way we are going to get any business at all is to tie ourselves to the LOST franchise, 'cause it's so popular, lawsuits be darned!" Man, I'd hate to be those guys if/when Disney's "Lawyer Generator 5000" gets warmed up. Shocked

And, honestly, even if it's a gamejack, they had some interesting email communications Smile

From what I remember, they actually registered the trademark and the name before Lost - which would mean they would be able to sue ABC...? (I have no idea how copyright/trademark law works).

Although...the fact that they used the bagua (fair enough its been around a long time) along with the name 'The Dharma Initiative' seems a bit fishy to me. If they just had one or the other it could be a coincidence, but both...

Wow, it would be interesting, if this company sued ABC for using Dharma Initiative themes in their series and ARG compaigns. Smile

This thread is filling up with trout posts. I suggest you guys read our whole thread, followed by dark UFO and the UK Lost forum.

The company name was registered in 2007. See State of California site:

http://kepler.ss.ca.gov/corpdata/ShowAllList?QueryCorpNumber=C2999798

The gal on the UK forum who bought the door lives in Louisiana, and was remodeling her house, liked one of the doors, and bought it. During the purchasing process, one of the employees admitted the owners were big Lost fans, and discovered the name was not registered, so they went ahead and filed for it. They didn't know about the summer ARGs, and decided to be mysterious when their phone started ringing off the hook 24/7. Since she was a paying customer, and not one of those "game players", the employee spilled the beans.

There is probably not much Disney can do if they were dumb enough not to register is themselves. However, the logo *is* probably an issue.

Since it was a lawfirm that filed on behalf of the door company, I am quite sure there had to be a vetting process of some sort, and that usually takes place after the initial filing (before it can be approved). From Disney's standpoint, it was probably a "slap yourself on the forehead" moment when contacted....somebody beat them to the registration and there wasn't a darn thing they could do about it. But why would they have a lose end like this in the first place?

I find a couple of things odd about the DWY site....first, why that URL? Why not make it the company's URL? Maybe because someone else would own the rights. Second, under the Terms of Service there are MANY paragraphs devoted to copyright infringement, especially logos and images. And yet the Surefit site continues to bear the logo.

Having stated that, I don't think Surefit is IG. I think Disney may have decided having this OOG existence would add further to the blurring of fiction and reality (especially if the owners were willing to "play along"), and so they just let it be.

Question

Nope, that was me being confused, they registered about 2 years ago.

Perhaps a mod could remove the "IG? Gamejack?" question from the topic title, and replace it with the "OOG" tag.

I actually wrote to TWDC and asked about this site. I explained how we usually tell if a site is "in game" (WhoIs, etc.) and how confused players are over the Dharma Initiative logo on Surefit's site. That was a couple of weeks or so ago. I just received this email:

Quote:

Shocked Shocked Shocked Uh, oooops. Guess it is definitely OOG.
