Thoughts on "cheating"

The "cheating" is an interesting issue. It's obviously not a "mistake," and it even seems like someone is telling us to do it, but then, what do they "want" us to do? I got my score into the 80s (legitimately) and was just pleased as punch until I saw all of this.

What's the RIGHT thing to do here?

Morally, I wouldn't "cheat." Plus, it makes the game a lot less fun (I remember when I figured out how to get Mario 1000 lives- it was cool at first, but then it didn't feel as satisfying when I won). But this is fiction, right? The point might be "cheating!" Maybe those of us who "cheat" get grouped up with person on the inside and those of us who don't stay with the Dharma camp, as some have suggested. Obviously, there are not going to be RL "repercussions" for cheating and I don't think they are going to want to alienate more of us by disqualifying us. Plus, last time I saw, the prior Dharma camp did not end up in a good place... Think I might take my chances with the inside person Wink

We were all hoping for a cool, real ARG and not just a series of IQ test questions. Maybe this is where it begins? The Lost Experience wanted us to stir it up, too.

Decisions, decisions. The leader board description almost implies that our scores don't matter anyway- these "Dharma points" do (but maybe the scores get converted to Dharma points). And what is the ultimate "prize" here, anyway? What do we have to lose?

I've tried a few times and can't get 100, only 99. My highest without the hack was 86.

To be clear on how to make it work... (and because I'm uncertain and haven't actually seen the cheat itself posted here) I'll spoiler it..
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the first click on a piece starts the timer, then you need to click a piece and press space. Essentially, a quick double-click-space combo enables the cheat. Works every time for me, but no matter how fast, I can't get it to register at 100. so I'm not sure how supposed claims to 100 score were able to do so. *shrug*

Where'd the hidden message come from again?

I can do that and get the timer to never go lower than 100, and even then the highest score is only 99.

And, now that I actually tried this "cheat", I'm absolutely convinced it was intentional. They want us to exploit the system.

I pointed it out here... But, I originally got it from Lostpedia. I'm not sure where it is, exactly.

So... They're not judging how well everyone does on the test.

They're judging who'll use the space/time cheat and who wont.

And since when did we get our own forum?

I agree with everything you said, Seadot. In addition, I perceive an even broader question tied to the plot of the show.

I submit this: Given the opportunity, if you could alter time, would you?

Most would probably say it was morally wrong and would never, ever do it; others might say yes if it prevented a disaster or saved lives. Others would do it in a heart beat just to do it.

I suspect Dharma will separate us into three groups:

1) Those that cheated big time with 900 scores (the class that would "just do it")
2) Those who used the skill just enough to get a higher score (the class that would do it for a beneficial reason)
3) Those that wouldn't stop time no matter what.

Furthermore, I speculate that the players in the first category are going to get "bully" or "soldier" type assignments, the second set will probably be sent to help fix things and clean up residual time effects, and the third set will get to be oblivious at a desk job in one of the offices.....!!!

Anyway, I can at this point totally believe this is in game, and not cheating. If any of the above scenario is correct, I am happy with my choice of improving my score with the "cheat". I will not try to get 900.

Since we discovered secret codes and hidden messages in an otherwise simple puzzle. Heh. NOW it's an ARG.

Nice deduction there, Sassy.

Although if you had some other 'concept' other than the one I spoke of and Bruce gave in detail, which would allow more than the 100. Would you please PM me? I can promise I'm happy w/ my score and will only be trying it, non-logged in lol

I don't....yet. There are a number of parameters in that game.....did you read the script? (It's in the flash file.)

PS: there is good talk over at Dark UFO about comparing this to the Science vs. Faith debate with Locke and Ecko--to press or not to press the button!!!!

EDIT: Ok, I have tried implementing my interpretations of the other params listed, and so far I don't have BUPKISS. I have been doing this while not logged in for those researching this. Most of them are obvious in the "if/then" abbreviations that it is a standard command in the game. At this point, it's lunch time, I have laundry to do and errands to run, so I give up for now. Of course it will bug me all day and tonight I will prolly try to figure more out. That being said, if someone posted right now that they heard that the 900 score was indeed Photoshop, I'd believe them.

Very nice deductions, Sassy and everyone! Yes, if this cheat was placed there intentionally, it would totally fit in with the storyline of LOST. Remember The DHARMA Video? Dr. Chang stated that DHARMA must be reconsistuted so that his research into the Kerr Metric can be revived and possibly save their lives by changing the events that lead to The Purge (when the actual DHARMA team were killed off, and Ben and "The Others" took their place).

This is becoming very interesting. Im glad we have our own board for this, too. Smile

You can thank Giskard, one of the other admins, for the forum creation. He put it all together earlier today. Very Happy

I like your reasoning Sassy. I think you're onto something!

I was hesitant at first (especially after trying so hard to get that 86), but it really seems like this is built into the game. Plus, I think Dharma's the type who'd want employees who wouldn't let a little thing like "Should we do it?" get in the way of "How do we do it?".

Now I'm excited about this being more ARGish and not a series of lame games like the Find815 thing. Very Happy

Edit: How on earth do you get 100%? The best I can manage is 99%. Has anyone done this?
