[MO] Co-ordinating the Multiverse Olympics
Six Teams on Six Continents Racing Simulatenously...

I have to admit I've been conveniently ignoring my current Strength Mission since May - but now that we're about a month and a half away from the Multiverse Olympics, it's becoming all too relevant.

So clearly at some point in the weekend of the 23/24th August, we'll have to co-ordinate a synchronized Labyrinth Run across six continents - which will inherently mean some of us will be competing in the dark.

From the Mission Brief: wrote:
Once we make the omph knot, we should be able to get more information from the other worlds about times and dates of the Multiverse Olympiad.

As above, it appears they'll be telling us when, but in the meantime I've found this handy tool on timeanddate.com. It allows you to name your six cities, and the date(s) you're wanting your simultaneous "meeting", and will provide a long list of options.

As to another part of the mission, broadcast the start times via Twitter to peoples' mobiles? Does anyone know of a better option?

And the orientation of the labyrinths? Maybe something else that will become clear once the Omph Knot is completed?

Anyhow, just wanted to provide a thread for this discussion - I'm not sure how much we need to do in regards to trial runs of the synchronized Finals - perhaps just practice the elements of it? I get the feeling it's going to be hard enough to co-ordinate it to happen once, let alone multiple times...

If this is anything like a normal Olympic event, we'll only have one shot at it.

And Twitter mobile would work for me.

This all sound good for Gaea, my main question is how will we communicate with the other competing multiverse teams to decide who has won etc?

Bring it on, Pangea! Very Happy

It's a good point about the dark - our guess is that NZ and Tokyo are most likely to be going early morn, while European teams will most likely be closer to night, so we'll have to start scoping out possible well-lit venues now.

Could we organise a mulitple-site video-conference live web-cast so that we could see all the teams going at once? Is there such a thing?

I asked Noriko a question, and she replied in her blog that an Asian city other than Beijing will run on Aug 23/24.
I wonder if there's no need to have Beijing in the daytime.

By the way, I wrote after the first synchronizing labyrinth (at 6am in Japan):
If there will be other chances of worldwide synchronizing event, setting the event two hours later will make the synchronization much easier for New Zealand, Australia and Japan. Then US will be 4-7pm, and it will be much cooler. Western Europe will be 23-24pm and a little difficult, but isn't it easier to hold an overnight party than an early morning party?

EDIT: I made a mistake - Western Europe would be 24-25pm with this proposal.

Aren't these final synchronized labyrinths supposed to take place during the Closing Ceremonies?

According to BeijingTicketing the ceremonies will be at:

Quote:
Sunday
24-Aug-2008
20:00 - 23:00

That's Beijing local time, I presume.

That could make for a very interesting run in Esseff.

That's 3:00 p.m. on August 23rd (Saturday) in San Francisco, which is just about perfect for me. Very Happy

[META] It's cool that this game is going clear through the olympics instead of just stopping at the beginning and telling us to just go watch.

Thanks for passing that on, unagi - that would also make it 7am in Tokyo, and 10am in Wellington - but 11pm in England or midnight in Germany!

This is going to be one heck of a live event...

Typically the men's marathon ends at the stadium shortly before the closing ceremonies. I'm imagining some Lost Ring Labyrinth running happening in the middle of the grass. That would be very interesting. With the vast majority of the viewing public having NO IDEA what it is (and probably just assuming it's a dance routine).

That's what I've been expecting, too. It's also been a really useful way to explain the 'point' of the game to people - 'There'll be a thing at the Olympic ceremony and everyone will be like, oh, nice shapes. But because we've participated in this narrative and helped through this game, we'll know that it really has to do with saving the world!'
