The groups could simply be a piece of data from our profiles--the first that comes to mind would be male/female since the mythical Ganymede and Pandora are of opposite gender. Alternatively, if the groups are a red herring and they want it to look random, it could be something really obscure (i.e.- the 11th digit in your card number is even/odd).

Nice hypothesis, I must say. It is entirely possible, and easily provable, that gender is the key here. The card number is as well, but we have been told not to give out our numbers, so that might not be wise to pursue at the moment.

I am male and am in the Ganymede group. And Sassy has said that she and her son are in Pandora and Ganymede, respectively. So, the data is starting to suggest gender is the environmental factor here. For those who don't mind, please post your gender and group if you haven't already, so we can further prove this idea.

Would've been cooler if it matched up to cheating or not cheating, IMO. The mythic Pandora is responsible for unleashing all the evils of mankind, and Ganymede is a victim of his own beauty and innocence... paints a nice ambiguous picture of morality, no?

Yes, I think it would have been more interesting, too. But, we take what we can get! Wink

Maybe I missed something that led to the idea that they "want" people to cheat but that definitely brings up some very real possibilities. What if the fact that it's so easy to cheat is actually part of the game's design? What if the only way to actually be chosen as a part of Dharma is to show either your vast resourcefulness or superior moral fiber?

Exactly. I believe the first indication we had that it was by design was when people started decompiling the flash code for the site, and discovered that there were comments within the code detailing in plain, obvious terms, how to "cheat"(my words, not theirs).

Seriously you guys? It didn't start there. It started with messages in "meta" tags....with emails that can be viewed on their site, which was weird enough on it's own to make me "view souce". They put those there to see if we were decompiling anything at all.

I firmly believe that the dark/light aspect of character will play a role in this game. It's based on a TV show whose entire premise is such. So yeah, Angri, I believe you are right. But I also think this leaderboard thing is more than for our own edification.

Oh yeah that's right, my bad. I misremembered( Shocked ) that the meta tags were how it started. Thanks for clearing that up. Wink

Hmm... I'm in Ganymede also. Used the cheat to get 99% score, am female, no Dharma points.

A friend of mine also used the cheat, zero Dharma points, and she's in Pandora.

I don't think there is any real way we can figure out what caused the groups to be seperated. The only thing I can come up with is the answers to the first test... or the number of times the puzzle was done. But I'm leaning more to the answers to the first test.

That or it's totaly random, or based on lastname, first name, age, location... heck there are many things it could be.

Experiment

In the true fashion of the Dharma Initiative, I just performed an experiment.

Hypothesis: Distribution of players into groups is based on the Eligibility Test.

Preocedure: I sent my neighbor an invitation, and sat with her as she registered. Then, during testing, she answered the exact answers to each of the questions that I did (I took notes when I took it, and have the list if you are that curious).

Results: She ended up being placed in Ganymeade, while I was put in Pandora with the same answers.

Conclusion: The players are NOT sorted based on their responses to the Eligibility Test.

Additionally, we have also ruled out location, gender, and cheating in previous data collections. As for the letter of first names, all three of us--my son, myself, and my neighbor--have the same letter for our first names. So we have ruled that out as well. I tend to believe this is nothing more than an alternating fill: one registers and is placed in Pandora, the next is placed in Ganymeade, etc, so that there is an even distribution.

Shocked

Hi everyone! I've been lurking since the start of this thing. I'm so excited by this game! Big Lost fan and I've been studying ARG's for some time. Anyway, wanted to throw my info into this whole groups debate.

On my regular profile I took the test legit, then used the cheat to get a 98. Was placed in Pandora, am in Chicago, and am female.

I sent out invites to my other two emails. With the first "test" account, I registered as male in Chicago, did the cheat on the very first test, and got a 99. I tried to answer the questions somewhat differently than I had the first time. Still got placed in Pandora.

Second "test" account I did the test legit and purposly took my time. Got a 55. Registered as a female and gave them my mom's house address in AZ. Answered the questions completely differently from either of the previous tests. Still got Pandora.

So, its looking like a random assignment to me...

Welcome WhoGirl17!

It does seem like our placement is random, but I don't think we'll necessarily stay in the same group because the My Progress page does say Current Group. Maybe it will matter later on?

@ Sassy and Whogirl17

Great job with the research, ladies! That's exactly what we needed! Wink

After seeing this, I will throw my hat in with the "random" opinion sector, but I agree with Tresbien, it might matter later on.

Does anyone else besides me think that this name/country registrant is--if not odd, then in very bad taste? "Evil.......Iran" Who wants to bet it's a dummy account from the USA?

Also, has anyone else tried changing the URL from "test01" to "test02" to see what happens? Interesting.....03, 04, etc.

I hope we get something new today. I am bored already.
