If you're going to try to add James Tinsley on Facebook, he's currently on the 4th page of search results, heh. You can recognize him by his photo and the "AKQA" identification.

I guess James Mutters' Toria was named for Toria Emery. I wonder if they are actually an item? 'Cause that would be too cute...but probably not the case.

Here in Beijing, we also ran game missions on the Olympic Green and at the Temple of Heaven at at the Olympic Athletic Finals, before playing out a two-part dramatic finale at the Great Wall of China, sending our global cast of characters home and embedding special Lost Ring easter eggs at the closing ceremonies of the 2008 Olympics, with all of our Lost Ring characters appearing in the worldwide broadcast. (Did you spot me and Kiyash there, too?)

Easter eggs? Does she just mean the fact that they appeared on TV, or is there more to it than that? Discuss Smile!

There were those special bikes that had a ring of lights around them. There was the symbolic "flare" created by many people in red outfits on the Memory Tower after the cauldron had been extinguished, representing the ongoing burning of the Flame in the people's hearts/country/whatever. There was one point of the closing ceremonies where several concentric circles of people were going around the lucky cloud tree...that reminded me of the concentric rings in the trailers for the game. But was Jane & the other designers really responsible for all that? Doubt it.

By the way, I found a good blog post summarizing the events of the closing ceremonies: http://tinyurl.com/5pdzvz

seems like they've left a secret message for Jane to decipher... but the audio is a bit terrible and the clues a bit obscure... something about snakes, clams and the godfather of soul XD

I think you have to take each line of the riddle and reconstruct the whole thing before you can answer it...I noticed that the line about "the name of the band" continued directly into the next person's riddle line, which started "whose lyrics..."

But that is for Jane to solve, and I think she should have to struggle through it on her own Wink.

You know what I am really curious about? I want to hear James tell the story of how he planted those 27 Codex pages! Talk about a monumental task!

I have taken the GRAND strength test that Jane mentioned on her blog:

Quote:
Your Top Strength: Love of learning
You love learning new things, whether in a class or on your own. You have always loved school, reading, and museums-anywhere and everywhere there is an opportunity to learn.

Your Second Strength: Appreciation of beauty and excellence
You notice and appreciate beauty, excellence, and/or skilled performance in all domains of life, from nature to art to mathematics to science to everyday experience.

Your Third Strength: Creativity, ingenuity, and originality
Thinking of new ways to do things is a crucial part of who you are. You are never content with doing something the conventional way if a better way is possible.

Your Fourth Strength: Curiosity and interest in the world
You are curious about everything. You are always asking questions, and you find all subjects and topics fascinating. You like exploration and discovery.

Your Fifth Strength: Judgment, critical thinking, and open-mindedness
Thinking things through and examining them from all sides are important aspects of who you are. You do not jump to conclusions, and you rely only on solid evidence to make your decisions. You are able to change your mind.

Good for you for taking that...I started it, but when I saw there were 240 questions to answer I decided to leave it for another time. I do enjoy personality tests, though, and I'm impressed that the Ancient Strength test is based on real-life psychology.

For those of you who don't want the game to end:
Quote:
And in a parallel world, but not this one, I imagine that players proved a scientific theory of the multiverse layout using the Pancosmologizer (one of my favorite mysteries of the game). And perhaps they learned more about the life and adventures of the original six travelers by studying the locations of the hidden artifacts and Monica's uncle's clues. Of course, these mysteries remain solvable and new player fictions remain creatable even though the live game is over; these legends can be explored long after the game ends and there is enough information about The Lost World out there to tell many more stories and explain many more mysteries.

I think another challenge could also be to try a hand at designing the lost winter sport for the 2010 winter games...and I don't think she means doing the original lost sport in the snow (Team Guelph done that already Wink)!

/me peeks out from behind the curtain

Hi Everyone,

James (Mutters) Tinsley here. I started working on this project about a year ago and never in a million years did I think that it would become what it did or that my role would become what it has. Hiding the 27 artifacts was probably one of the most interesting and exceedingly challenging things I had had to work on in my career so far, and I know for a fact that I owe pints of beer to people in 27 cities around the world
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
(save for perhaps Brest and Lausanne...but that's all I'll say about that)
. That, however, is probably a story for another time, but I did want to say this:

On March 3rd as the website launched a coworker came over to my desk and said "James, we'd like part of your job for the next while to be monitoring the players to help keep track of progress in the game". That was without a doubt a defining moment in my career. Anyways, I've been awed and humbled by the talent, thoughtfulness, and creativity that I've witnessed in this community and in the communities on IRC and the Wiki.

So a MASSIVE CLAP CLAP d.O.b, CLAP CLAP \O/ to all of you.

Anyways, we're packing up here in Beijing, and I'm entirely out of energy, but I've had to restrain myself from posting for so long that I wanted to finally say Hello to everyone, and tell you how much fun it's been to look over your shoulders. I feel like I know a lot of you pretty well, so I'll just tell you that James Mutters and James Tinsley aren't that far off from one another.

A quick shout-out to those people on IRC, I've really enjoyed that no matter what time of day, there's always gameplay going on!

Anyways, that's all from me for now, tomorrow I travel backwards through time which, I imagine is a bit like traveling through the multiverse, except that in the multiverse where I end up, Toria is Married to someone else Wink

Sincerely,
James "Mutters" Tinsley

PS: Take the survey, there'll be some fun behind the scenes stuff for you all to piece together.

PPS: The video you found on my YouTube was a fun puzzle which we created for Jane while here, but we threw it together so quickly that we left out a line, and in the end Eli Hunt had to be called in to watch over her shoulder as she worked it out fixing the mistakes which I hadn't caught the first time. If you'd like to try your hand at solving it, here's the full text of the puzzles:

Part 1
At the palace of the creature with the head of a snake, the horns of a deer, the eyes of a rabbit, the ears of a cow, the neck and body of a snake, the belly of a kind of huge clam, the scales of a carp, the claws of a hawk, the palm of a tiger, whiskers and a beard.

Tell the keeper of all things the name of The Goddess who is attended by a solitary animal which, in a collective is referred to by the name of the band who's lyrics challenged people to 'give up' an American musical style also played by the Godfather of Soul.

Part 2 (received after completing the task in Part 1)
Contact the agonothetai at the following location:

Multiply the number of items on the flag by the year the flag was debuted, subtract the product of knots in a traditional omphalos and the sum of the current number of Omph Knots on our universe and the number of circuits in the smallest Multiverse olympiad. From that, subtract the product of the Master of Ceremony's age and the equation of the end of games. Finally, to that, add the number of authors of the Codex, times the equation of 'find her'.

And tell them the name which comes from the convergence of the following:

1) The name of the person at the end of a team olympic sport that used an element used to set up labyrinths which is not what Diego uses to draw his labyrinths all the time that ended in the year of a tax record which might not seem like the most exciting place to begin a story

2) You are standing at Omphalos # 5, you travel 16165 Stadia in the direction of Hermes +10.95 and from there, you travel 208 Stadia in the direction Hera +10. Where are you?

Enjoy!

Love the syntax in that puzzle. If our civilisation crashes, and if by chance a future Eli Hunt in a thousand years or so will retrieve that YouTube video (or this forum) and reads that text, I would like to see his face ...

Thanks for popping out your head from behind the curtain for a moment - hope you had a great time in Beijing, and that this will have been the first of many more glorious ARG experiences yet to come for you!

(It's been the first for me. And I enjoyed every single second of it!)

Hi, I think I saw them when it was sounding the Chinese National Anthem, and the camera changed to the public. Chinese people were singing, and I saw a blonde woman, who looked like Jane, that wasn't singing. They appeared again one minute later.

Shocked So it's true what James says in one of his chats with Jane in the bonus material! He said "I am theo!" It really isn't a game! Aaah!

Lol Laughing.

Thanks for doing such an awesome job being James Mutters, for finding excellent hiding places for the artifacts, and for all the other hard work you put into this ARG. Oh, and thanks for being such a good sport about the kidnapping Smile. Good thing you were wearing long sleeves and long pants or that duct tape mighta hurt Smile.

So if we have an answer to your puzzle (nice one, BTW), I guess we shouldn't tell Jane, eh?
