Adding a Prizes element to a ARG

This is my first post on Unfiction. Have been reading through everything for a while now.

I'm working on a small ARG at the moment. But got a little thing I'm not sure about. The people who pay the budget and have the rights on the character and event I'm going to base the ARG on, want to add some prices to give away to players.

So I need to add this part into the story. My idea is making a site of one of the characters, where people can sign up and have answer question/complete tasks for that character. This will give me a leader board based on that I can give away prices. And send the players a little bit in a direction where to search depending on the task (the target audience has never played something like this before). I will also add the possibility for the players to create a team that they still can work together, that they still will work together and not everybody on there own.

What do you think about giving away prices in a ARG? And what do you think of the way I want to deal with this? Or do you might have a better idea?

[edited: typo]

Cool It's "prizes". You'll probably want to edit your post and the title so everyone knows what you are asking.

In reading "Price element" I first thought you were looking how to charge players to play the game. I know english is not your first language. Just trying to help. Wink

Now, to answer your question. Leaderboards when a prize is promised create competition, not necessarily cooperation/collaboration.

Maybe all active participants get their name put into a raffle for the prizes. But game swag is more meaningful if it's something related to the story that a player gets from interaction with a character. If it's an artifact needed to push the story forward. These don't have to be expensive either.

Yes that is also a possible to give away things as part of the ARG. but i don't know if that will work in this case.

Yes the competition part is where I'm worrying about. The idea of adding a groups to play is that the group will work together. But don't know yet how to deal with that.

Prizes or other "swag" do make for a good incentive. Just make sure you deliver on the promise of awarding them!

Games have tried "teams" and other things to help foster collaboration with varying degrees of success. Lots of the "old timers" will say they don't play "prize" games, because it hurts collaboration and interaction. But I see them play them, anyway. They're generally more appreciative of receiving things that actually appeared in the game or connect the player and game at an emotional level.

To satisfy both (competitive and collaborative) camps, maybe you could do a "First To Find" prize and also token prizes to anyone who completes a certain task and provides contact information.

Once the FTF prize is awarded, the willingness to share the details of completing the task won't be an issue and those that aren't good at the task will still be able to complete it and stay engaged.
