[META] Problems with the game

In an attempt to split up an 89 page thread properly, I moved these posts to a new topic. The original thread can be found here - jamesi

Whoah, whoah, it just started, and I'm of the mind that something is better than nothing. It'll work out in the end.

Why is it that even though Hoodlum can't seem to be bothered to make a good first impression, you feel a need to attempt to reverse that impression? If a novel or movie is horrible from the start, having a fantastic last chapter just doesn't justify it.

The site's been up for what, 3 weeks now and they're just now telling us that we get "extra credit" for refering people? I'm a huge Lost fan, everyone that I could have refered, were refered, the day after the site went up. Why did they wait to share that with us? So, beyond the technical problems, the way that they've handled that has completely wiped out an avenue for me.

It actually seems as if every new layer that is added brings it's own new set of problems-

Site 1st Up- Late. Many people can't access it.
Email Pages Up- Not protected or hidden in even a basic way. Leaks.
Site Secuirty Update- Many people can't access it.
Site Update- Late. Not enough servers, many people can't access it.
Announcement of Referals- 3 weeks after site launched, who has anyone left to refer?

Although things might "work out in the end", Hoodlum is going to have to be the one's to make that happen. At the End, we'll judge the experience as a whole but that's only possible by taking part and considering the Beginning and Middle. Remember, the Ride itself is just as, if not more, important than the destination.

I have to admit the referal thing bugs me too, but not because I refered people already, but because I dont have any friends who are as into Lost as I am and would be into the ARG. Sad

Why am I being attacked here? I'm trying to show patience and tolerance for a game that has (up until today) barely started and is being run by a company with relatively little experience with ARG's. I'm not trying to reverse a negative impression at all, I'm hoping (clearly against hope) that others will step back a bit and just persevere in these early days, rather than lynching Hoodlum because they're obviously still learning a few tricks about this medium.

At the end, yes, I will judge the experience as a ride with a beginning, middle and end, but just because it stumbled coming out of the gates doesn't mean I can't be optimistic that it'll pull something incredible out of its ass that shuts the naysayers up and satisfies everybody to an extent. If we're gonna talk in metaphors, Usain Bolt isn't the guy with the best start off the blocks, but he damn sure puts on a winning show once that's out the way.

More to the point, my original comment wasn't even trying to justify a clumsy start, I was stating that I'd rather have this, a so-far badly managed game that I'm confident will pick itself up sooner or later to give us the story it set out to, than absolutely jack shit in terms of LOST content between now and Season 5.

As for the referral thing, yes, that's vaguely annoying that we weren't made aware of this earlier but I honestly see no point in getting in a twist about this until we know what exactly the Dharma Points grant us access to.

Well, that's it! It seems that the server has crashed. I get a "failed to connect" error when i enter in the URL. How sad....

Half the time I get that, half the time it blue screens then freezes on the loads. I think part of the problem is too many people trying to access it.

It's Hoodlum Productions, right? Does anyone want to contact them to see what the heck is going on and what anyone on the Admin side of things is going to do to fix it?

The reason why: Remember how excited we all felt after that commercial aired after the last episode of the latest season of LOST and how much we were looking foward to this? Now, we have something as dumb as not realizing the popularity of LOST preventing us from playing this game. I dunno abut you, but i'm angry.

Worth posting again. I can't even get on the site to check status.

Oh yes, another shameless plea.....for those of you (who are yet again bored) helping me to win over at scavenja.com, I have another entry or two that needs bonus points!!!! "Who or what has you on a leash?" and "Your hamster got stuck where?" entry by Sassy1962! (The leash one is of our cat & my kid, and the hamster one is of Steve Irwin and a boa!) One guy managed to pull ahead of me by getting bonus points--he has coworkers to vote for him and i don't work, so you guys are my coworkers!!! And THANKS.

And as for the post just prior to this....here you go: Trout

EDIT: I see the trout post is removed....don't want anyone to think I was throwing fish at dposse!

I'm not advocating contacting Hoodlum since they are no doubt aware of the issues. For those who wish to do so, here's the correct company website:
http://www.hoodlum.com.au/v5/index.html
Email to: mailto:info@hoodlum.com.au

Look at the site yourself. It's the company that did Find815 so it's correct.

The site updating sign is a lie. Why do you think the dharma initiative sign looks like cake?

sowasred2012,

Although posing a different view than your's, my intention wasn't to attack you. That post was made in an active thread in response to a series of messages where someone's displeasure with this game's current state is brushed aside simply because of the timeframe at which the troubles take place. I was simply discussing how "when" you feel let down isn't important, you still feel that way.

The unsolicited movement of this post into it's own thread is unfortunate as, out of context, it appears as an entire topic designed to "target" your opinion, where "countering" was my only intention.

I wouldn't, regardless of my level of disagreement, begin a thread with a quote that I wanted to argue from another thread as the context is lost and it singles out an individual in what can only be an uncomfortable way. I'd appreciate a little more thought put into decisions of this type as the context of a thread can be more important than the post's message itself.

I can only hope that, even if you disagree with my original post's point, you can see that any feelings of "attack" that a debate can typically raise has been exasperated by the decision to spilt this particular post into it's own topic, and that that wasn't my intention.

Angri

If I may weigh in here...

First, thanks for the forum split. It was becoming a dumping ground and the split, I think, will help to focus efforts.

Next, I think that sowasred2012 will understand after the rather well put response from AngriBuddhist. The way these things work can be a bit of a challenge for the one responsible for the split. Also, everyone is entitled to their own opinion about the way or quality of the game. Both of you (Angri and sowasred) are right. There have been many missteps in the implementation and there is, for the LOST fanatic (which I count myself as one), more content and something to do during the long hiatus.

Lastly, I think that we can all agree that, regardless of personal proclivities, we respect and value the ideas shared here. [/2cents]

Angri,

I completely agree with you re: not agreeing with this being split into it's own thread, at least in so far as starting it with a debate that I took a little too personally. I think it's a good idea in principle, since the main thread was becoming bogged down with technical complaints related to the site, but at the minute it looks like we're being made a spectacle of before we've had a chance to have any real prolonged dialogue regarding our opinions.

I feel I should point out I had made my response before the split and as such wasn't a factor when writing it. However, as I have said, I took your post a little too personally and reacted accordingly. I apologise for that, it is not my intention to cause hostilities.

I do see and understand your point of view, and respect your measured response, but I still stand by my own point of view in saying that, as more of a LOST fan than an ARG fan, I'll remain optimistic that the game will turn out to have been worth all this hassle.

Well I was able to take "Test 1" and at least get to the registration page. Then I apparently did something stupid... like try to upload an image... and now I'm back to not being able to get to the site at all.

Well, since this is now on topic, I have this to add: I'm annoyed that what looked like a summer-season arg is starting at the very end of the summer. I'd really wanted to participate in this, but I teach and study during the academic school year, so I will be really busy. dang. oh well.
