 [PRESS] Find the Lost Ring
For major press artices covering the ARG

Now that FTLR has its own forum, we can have a thread dedicated to linking to press coverage of FTLR.

First off, with Jane's Keynote at SXSW came a host of blogs and articles about ARGs and her projects, so a quick google should suffice for those.

But after her keynote, CNet sat down with Jane to specifically talk about Find the Lost Ring.

The wonderful interview can be found here:

It's early days yet, but this is an important part of the interview.

But it's a slow ramp up?

McGonigal: Yeah, one of the things I learned about I Love Bees is how important it is to respect the ARG community and give them the opportunity to play with something first, and kind of get things organized, and set up for when someone who's never played before shows up. So we sent out The Lost Ring rabbit holes--a box of clues to the game--to about 50 all-star players to get them going. It's not we were advertising on TV. So by time other players show up, they won't get lost. We're thinking about how to make this huge narrative experience not be overwhelming.

We're laying the groundwork for casual latecomers - starting the conversations and collecting the basic body of information about the game universe, which we need to start organizing (we've collected a lot but it's not very accessible to latecomers at the moment).

What would you do on the wiki to summarize where we are?

...moved to the resources thread as it's more appropriate...

As the trailhead in the forum is dead by now I'd say it's very difficult for latecomers to get the evolution of the game. No one that comes new to an ARG will read through 10+ different threads and will get the timeline. The only hope is the wiki - it's just that most people start with the forum. That's what I did, and I was glad about the trailhead (though it cost me about 50 min to read through it).

Last weekend, after one week, we had 1,000 players. That's not a lot. We want millions of players. So we're putting the trailers online, and we're hoping tens of thousands of people watch those and that it grows from there. By Beijing, we hope there will be millions. That has to happen.

I would say that for the vast majority of new players, there should be no need to read the 60+ pages of the trailhead thread. Many new players will just need to know the basics about the tattoed amnesiacs and how to interact with them.

This discussion probably belongs in another area - so I'll make it quick Smile

While that can be daunting - IMO (and past experience shows) that it is *more* daunting to read through 50+ pages of thread. Organized threads make it easier to keep different conversations separate to avoid confusion.

Well, of course. Nobody sais anything against that. Of course each character needs it's own thread and each video as well. But we need a timeline, a trail as well. And since yesterday we (and the latecomers!) won't have that anymore.

And there is no discussion anymore. The trailhead is already dead. So latecomers: Good luck.

Rather than complaining about it, I decided to create a Story So Far thread. It is only complete to March 9th so far, Will update the rest tomorrow - it's late now.

We try to find solutions to problems here, not create negativity Smile

This discussion should probably be moved to it's own thread, so it doesn't clutter up the press thread. EDIT: Made a thread

On the article, I noted they miscounted the athletes:
CNet wrote:
The game is built around the fictional concept that more than 2,000 years ago an Olympic sport was lost to history and that now, five Olympic-caliber athletes have turned up in corn fields around the world, amnesiac but sure they've been tasked with some great mission.

Very Happy Besides that, nice article.

BoingBoing finally writes about the Lost Ring

Quote:
Jane McGonigal, the creator of alternate reality games I Love Bees and World Without Oil, and my colleague at Institute for the Future, has just launched a new global ARG for the 2008 Summer Olympics. The plot of the game, called The Lost Ring, revolves around a fictional Olympic sport that vanished 2,000 years and five athletes who have reappeared in the present. Link to Jane's blog post with details, Link to The Lost Ring trailer, Link to News.com interview

I'm beginning to feel sorry for AKQA -- a lot of articles seem to be overlooking their involvement.

Again they've miscounted the athletes. Unless one of the people we think is an athlete isn't after all Shocked

Some lovely banner ads for Lost Ring on Livejournal as well, if you have the sort of account that sees banner ads on LJ.

Journalist wanting to interview Ring players

Hi,

I'm a reporter based in California with The Christian Science Monitor newspaper. I'm working on a story about The Lost Ring and would like to interview current players about their experiences so far. I would need to talk by phone by the end of the weekend. If you're up for it, drop me a private note or email and we can exchange contact info.
