Q31

Anybody make any headway into Q31?

I tried an answer group (one or more of the answers are incorrect) and noticed there is no comfirmation as to whether you have ANY of the answer correct. Which sucks.

We could be at this for years. One particular answer has the potential of hundreds of combonations.

Q31

Just got started, myself. Going away for the weekend, but I'll try to work on it a bit while I'm gone. Looks pretty cool, though.

Q31: Fortunately, the penalty for an incorrect answer is only .04

Mavado, I think you are right. The 'cipher' for the chest could be problematic. I guess we'll find out once a correct answer is submitted.

My thinking for the cipher is that it's the number i've retrieved repeated twice.

Also, the amount of metres to dig seems a little ridiculous, does he have some sort of heavy machinery on this island, or is it not supposed to be realistic?

I thought maybe we could start a list of answers we've tried that are wrong. I'll start the ball rolling

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
In order, paces forward, left, right, metres to dig, trunk cipher

12, 6, 8, 46, 1818
6, 3, 4, 46, 1818
6, 3.5, 4, 46, 1818
6, 7, 8, 46, 1818
12, 7, 8, 46, 1818

I've tried some other combinations aswell but i'm not 100% sure what they were so i won't list them. The only answer i'm confident about is the metres to dig.

Q31

I tried only one so far.
P-F = 24 (one of Bigfoot's paces are twice a normal persons)
P-L = 6 (normal)
P-R = 8 (normal)
Meters = .3 (12 divide by 31 = seems more reasonable than 12m or 31m)
Combo = 5544 (page 2 has four paragraphs, first 2 paragraphs have 5 lines and last 2 have 4 lines) *Just something I noticed*

Obviously, one or more is wrong.

I have tried a few variations myself.
Forward: 11, 23, 23
Left: 6, 12, 12
Right: 8, 16, 16
Depth: 31, 31, 7
Cipher: 0018, 0018, 0018

We don't even know that the number of his crew, including himself, is 18 on day 50.
They started with 32 on day 27.
3 die on day 34.
10 mutinied on day 36. (did they land on the island?)
Bigfoot dies on day 39. (was Bigfoot part of the crew, or an animal?)

Are the numbers after "After" from the encrypted messages on the love letter and the map important?
I did not need them to decode the messages.
Do they have any purpose?

[UPDATE] Got it

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

These are just the positions where to insert a space

Yes, I found the space thing too. I'm at work and couldn't get to a computer. One thing I seem to remember, and checked it in the dictionary, is that one definition of Pace is 2 steps. Which would give us the first leg as 11.5. I'm going to try that. But then if Bigfoot's pace = 2 regular paces, it just gets more complicated.

Also, did you notice the last line in the journal? It's missing two t's. I wonder if that's significant in some way.

EDIT: About the birthday....could it be Feb. 29?

ps. maybe there's some special marking on the other side of the map. Rolling Eyes

Just quickly, something i thought about overnight, from his comment about his age, it is actually possible to work out all the relevant days. He makes the comment on Day 35, implying that Day 35 is 01/01/XX. So Day 1 was 28/11/XX, and Day 53 (last entry) was 19/01/XX.

Relevant? Probably not, but no harm in sharing.

What seems to be the consensus of the pirate's birthday? Since he makes the joke about being 3 years older next year, I thought it might be Feb. 29. Do you think that's incorrect? Otherwise, I don't understand the joke.

The Birthday should be Dec. 31. He made the joke on 1. January:
The day before yesterday I was 45 --> Means he is 46 and become 47 this year.
next year he will become 48.

Yes, I agree that his birthday is 12/31 but as kie_yeo said, 31 meters is a long way to dig to bury some treasure.

Aaaah, thank you. Now I understand it. As for the depth, what about 3.1? And do you think a pace = 2 steps? I've tried many combinations, too without success. Also 0180 and 1188 for the trunk.
