Facebook Treasure Hunt

Hi all,

posting in timewasters because I really don't know where it belongs, feel free to move it..

a few weeks back advertisements started popping up on facebook talking about a real life treasure hunt. (facebook ads are user paid for. as far as I can tell this is NOT sponsored by facebook..)
the ad links to this facebook group (link may not work if you are not a member)
http://www.new.facebook.com/groups.php?ref=sb#/group.php?gid=30517404364

the facebook group points to this website
http://www.facebooktreasurehunters.com
(you really only need the website to particiate)

The reason I am posting here is because I'm at a loss.. those of us participating have hit a brick wall (hard) and can not get through the first level, and the creator is not releasing any hints.. I'm hoping to maybe find some different sets of eyes that may see something that we didn't..

the group states that the hunt will have 33 levels and in addition to the 'grand prize' there will be minor awards throughout. (if that's any kind of incentive)

my issue is (and the reason I put this in timewasters) that I can not find any affiliation with the people running this and any major corporation that would sponsor fabulous prizes, a lot of people I've worked with are beginning to think it's a hoax and giving up.. but in the spirit of the hunt I'm going to hold out a little longer..

the first part of the hunt has a lot to do with Disney's National Treasure (clues, references, the whole shebang) (but why would they be advertising that now? both have been out on dvd, and third is not even finalized..)

If anyone has any questions/thoughts/ancient meerschaum pipes, feel free to PM me.

Joe

I don't have a Facebook account (and don't plan on setting one up, any time soon).

We could use a little more info.
Could you share with us what you've found and where you are?

I'm assuming everyone currently playing is past the door and has filled out the registration form?

ok well I've reached two logins now... two 'doors' that require a username/password... haven't found anything that even indicates what we're to enter. Confused

Anyone else at the winding stairs?

That is... the charlotte key requires a password, as do the winding stairs.

eta: I didn't sign up through paypal... so there may be something worth finding in the first 3 'free days' before you're supposedly charged $33AUD every 30 days, 15 times (15 months)

this is why I love this forum! lol.. you guys are exactly where I am..

don't sign up for the paypal thing.. I believe it's just there to make "The Family" look legit..

I couldn't get a straight answer out of the creator (he didn't mention it at all, and he's deleted two posts that I know of from the official board with relevant info..)

for the second user/password (or first, the second was the winding stairs, as the winding stairs deadended until a few days ago)
hint

could someone that knows javascript please view the source at the top of this page, I don't know enough about the language to figure out what this page is supposed to do, I know the script is broken though.. and the second image is linked wrong (replace the / with a &)

the only other info I have is posted directly by the creator

"So here is a clue: In the movie "The secret lies with charlotte" is a boat under the ice. In the life hunt Charlotte is a person."
and that hints will be posted 'soon' and will be found in the way that Ben Gates found the clue leading to the Declaration (the pipe)

and now for my spoiler filled rant
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

I can't understand how we were supposed to find "The Family" site it leads to the Mona Lisa clue, which if you follow exactly, deadends at the light (which is where you are supposed to receive the charlotte key) and then in that aspect, how were we supposed to find the first mona lisa.. (other than.. you know.. playing with urls like we all did) none of us that are working on the facebook side can come up with how we were supposed to get these links, we just have them (which is fine.. but we're stuck because we don't have any type of clue as to what the passwords are..

and some things that have been tried
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Charles Carroll has been mentioned numerous times as being the "Charlotte" we're looking for, as he had to do with the Declaration and the Pipe, but it doesn't really work for user password..

The url you've spoilered is either promoting a book (which we did discuss in a thread here) or is making use of its text for this hunt. I'm royally confused. Oh, and just like the first domain, this one is really a different site in a frame wrapper. (The wrapper is hosted in Australia, the frame leads to
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://www.mytbt.ws/tslwc/
which is hosted in Texas, but neither is really a clue, just basic web hosting.

I think what joe is saying is that they were already at the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

site and from looking at the javascript
(Which seems to be attempting to load the image
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://www.mytbt.ws/tslwc/recruit/images/$bill450.gif
and then doing a mouseover effect to place another image over part of the first one, specifically, the image located at
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://www.mytbt.ws/thefamily/hunters&collectors/images/eye.gif
), the site
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://thesecretlieswithcharlotte.com/
was found via one of frames in the initially-loaded, animated image.

So pretty much what I missed from the original post about charlotte when seen at http://www.facebooktreasurehunters.com minus the javascript mousover thing.

BTW: Who created that site?

End of spoiler-crazy post.

all of the sites are hosted on mytbt.ws (either directly or indirectly) which is registered to the person who is listed as the creator of the facebook group (and lives in australia). my assumption is that he's using his personal webspace..

a "hint page" has been added, although I believe it's just pointing to what we know..

steps to get there..
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

there's a link to the page hidden in the image at the top of the secret lies with charlotte page
http://www.mytbt.ws/tslwc/hintpagethrough.htm
page claims there are no hints at this time..
there's a blank image at the top that on mouseover reveals an image of something (it's tiny!) (but this explains what the javascript is supposed to be doing..) and that links to the actual hint
http://www.mytbt.ws/tslwc/images/g.jpg
and a link to the actual hint
http://www.mytbt.ws/tslwc/hint/getting_started/
HINT...

Use the movie as a template.
The key clues throughout the movie point
to an object outside the movie that
expose Charlotte.

Summary of clues in film

Edit: just after writing this I found a wikipedia link that has a better summary of clues (Note: I tried to embed this, but couldn't get it to work. sorry) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Treasure_(film)#Clues_and_their_meanings

From the secret lies with charlotte site

'
Quote:
The Secret Lies With Charlotte' - is the first clue in the movie National Treasure. In the film Nicolas Cage is knighted by his grandfather and given a clue, "The secret lies with Charlotte". His father and grandfather have searched for the answer all their lives to no avail. In the movie Nicolas Cage (Ben Gates) finds Charlotte that leads to more clues in search of an ancient treasure.

So just a quick list of the clues from the movie National Treasure (although I think that the 2nd National Treasure movie also has the name Charlotte as a clue)

1.
Quote:
The Secret lies with Charlotte
- given to Ben Gates' ancestor by Charles Caroll

2. Charlotte turns out to be a ship - shipwrecked somewhere in the artic, which Ben finds.

3. The only thing of value on the ship related to the treasure hunt in the movie is a two piece Meerschaum pipe. Using his blood, Ben exposes the engraved riddle which is the next clue...I think this is accurate:
Quote:
The legend writ, the stain affected. The key in Silence undetected. Fifty-five in iron pen, Mr. Matlack can't offend."
Matlack engrossed the copy of the Declaration which was signed or something like that.

4. Somehow, and rather incredulously to the viewer, Ben figures out this means there is a treasure map on the back of the declaration of independence.

5. After many shenanigans regarding stealing the Declaration of Independence, they find a combination of numbers on the back! Woo!! A cipher!! treasure map exists!

6. To decode map they need the Silence DoGood letters from the Franklin Institute.. they were written by Ben Franklin who pretended to be writing as widow in favor of the Revolutionary War. ( I've been there many times, do visit it if you are ever in Philly)

7. I don't know the exact list of numbers from the back, you could probably get it from a movie still.. but decoded it reads:
Quote:
"The vision to see the treasured past, comes as the timely shadow crosses in front of the house of Pass and Stow"

8. Pass and Stow made the Liberty Bell. And guess what? On the back of a $100 bill Ben finds that the clock shows 2:22. But, of course, that is pre- daylight savings time 2:22 so it would actually be 3:22. But anyway that is the time they need to be where the liberty bell used to be housed. (now its in a plastic cube for viewing elsewhere)

9. Watching the shadow fall, Ben sees a brick with a mason's symbol on it. Turns out the brick is hollow and inside are glasses with sets of different colored lenses. INTERESTING! Ben Franklin himself invented these glasses.

10. Putting the glasses on and looking at the back of the Declaration, another clue is revealed to Ben...
Quote:
"Heere at the Wall."
[There is also a symbol is a symbol of Trinity Church Wall Street .] I guess Heere used to be the name for Broadway and Wall is where the end Wall of Manhattan used to be and where Wall St. still is.

11. After more shenanigans which takes them to the Intrepid (note the Intrepid doesn't have part of the treasure hunt as designed by the founders, its just an aside.) If you visit Manhattan, it isn't here right now, but it is returning after some refurbishing), they end up at Trinity Wall Street. (there is lots of revolutionary history at Trinity Wall which might become relevant in your search.)
Ben looks at the declaration through the glasses and sees something he missed before...
Quote:
"Beneath Parkington Lane."

12. Parkington Lane turns out to be the name on a coffin and beneath him is an opening to a tunnel, a bunch of rickety wooden stairs and a dumbwaiter which lead (following more shenanigans involving peril to all) to an empty room.

13. In the room is a lantern which Ben says is a clue to the North Church in Boston...but that was just a ruse to fool the bad guys!!!...they (turn the lantern I think) somehow find another room which is empty, but has two indentations: one is the exact shape of the bowl of the pipe found in the Charlotte and the other is where the stem fits. Ben craftily uses them, opens the door and they find treasure!!

What if the family secret is that they're freemasons, or members of the knights templar?

just a heads up, a lot of the links are no longer available ("the family" and the main hunters and collectors site, all others have had their links removed)

and this morning I received this email from the group..

Quote:

Hi

Due to a few glitches in the programming there were a number of exposed back doors. These have been sealed and will be closed soon. The score board shows 4 hunters are through to level two but we have to determine if these hunters came through the front or back door.

So if you know the Charlotte key please re-enter the door and log your name on the score board so that we can announce a champion and send a prize. The registration form is not the score board.

If you are not through the front door yet don't give in you will learn a lot on this hunt.

Cheers

The treasure hunters team

so it seems we're back at square one..

also this link is missing from the list above

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
