[WF][Trailhead] Whitechapel Foundation: Open Cases
Collaborative investigation of paranormal and occult events.

Quote:
Dear Sir,

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Christopher Patel and I am the director of research and investigations for the Whitechapel Foundation. The Whitechapel Foundation is a research organization concerned with the objective investigation of reports of the paranormal. As our charter states, our mission is to, "...document and investigate reports of paranormal events and crytozoological entities." I will be the first to admit that this sounds a bit grandiose and more than a bit "kitschy", but in reality we are a serious, somewhat stolid research group interested in a better understanding of our world and how each of us perceives it.

I am writing to you because your name came up during a strategy session with one of our partners, Djinn Productions. In the course of discussing a new Whitechapel project called "Open Cases" we came to understand that there is a class of entertainments referred to as Alternate Reality Games (ARGs), and that the people who are interested in ARGs might also be interested in our "Open Cases" project.

You see, "Open Cases" is intended to make information related to certain of our Foundation cases available to an external audience; people who might be able to add to the research and to the objective review of the case. Although the "Open Cases" project is open to all, we are especially hoping to attract people who have a deep curiosity, are open to new ideas, can think far out of the box, are creative, and who enjoy a challenge. In talking to our friends at Djinn, it seemed like there is a good chance that you might have an interest in our project.

Therefore, I simply wanted to extend a personal invitation to join us at our "Open Cases" site. I have no way of knowing how often new cases will be added, or what types they will be. But I can assure you that they will be of a sort that require the special talents of people such as yourself. As a matter of fact, we have recently posted our first case on this new site, and although it does not appear to be directly related to a 'paranormal' event there is quite a sense of the strange about it. The "Open Cases" section of our website it located here: http://whitechapelfoundation.org/opencases/

Thank you very much for your time. I sincerely hope that you will have the opportunity to visit our site.

Very best regards,

Christopher Patel
Director, Research & Investigations

From the website and the images it seems a lot like a story I read a while ago. Autumn Country.. There was a link for it on DeviantArt.

Initial hunch: it's a book code. Assuming Google Books didn't send me on a goose chase, then the word from Janissary Tree is "forks."

How do you know? I couldn't figure out the code (though I have all the authors). They also are all previewable at Amazon:

Invisible Cities, by Italo Calvino
p:IC:7:1:6

In the Hall of the Dragon King, by Stephen R. Lawhead
h:SRL:6:22:2

Labyrinths: Selected Stories and Other Writings, by Jorge Luis Borges
p:JLB:4:34:5

The Janissary Tree, by Jason Goodwin
p:JG:P:7:9:12

Labyrinths: Selected Stories and Other Writings, by Jorge Luis Borges
p:JLB:4:last:first

The Wise Women and Other Stories, by George MacDonald & Craig Yoe
p:GM&CY:4:6:last

Hmm

Just a guess but I think the code is Page->paragraph->word#=word necessary to complete a coherent english sentence.. I could be wrong though. It might be the first letter of those words..

Hmm... page, paragraph, word doesn't work because Lawhead p.6 doesn't have 22 paragraphs.

Ditto for page, word, letter because Borges p.4, word 34, "Asia" doesn't have 5 letters.

Tired, stumped, going to bed.

EDIT: Has anyone noticed that the lower right-hand corner has a handwritten "2" with a "^" over it? In music theory it means the second degree of a scale. Highly doubtful here.

okay, so we have this info now.... so what are we going to do with it? that hardly seems like a viable solution to this puzzle. how does the 2-hat in the bottom corner figure in?

Whitechapel's News page has a link to Djinn Productions, which has this link: http://www.autumncountry.net/ and some other interesting things.

Does that look anything like the story you read?

I'd suggest emailing Ethan Grant with the results of the book code. I'd do it, but I didn't have a hand in solving it and don't want to step on any toes. I did register at the Open Cases site, though.

The web design looks great so far, very clean and Mac-like. Very TINAG so far, though I haven't really delved into the Djinn side yet.

It looks like the caret symbol (^) has quite a few uses. Maybe one of them will help.

Go ahead and contact Ethan. I'm not too big on the interactions.
(And am not too confident we have the right editions of the books).

I think you do.

Invisible Cities : p : IC : 7 : 1 : 6
Book : paperback : Italo Calvino : page 7 : line 1 : 6th word = three

In the Hall of the Dragon King : h : SRL : 6 : 22 : 2
Book : hardcover : Stephen R. Lawhead : page 6 : line 22 : 2nd word = king

Labyrinths: Selected Stories and Other Writings : p : JLB : 4 : 34 : 5
Book : paperback : Jorge Luis Borges : page 4 : line 34 : 5th word = only

The Janissary Tree : p : JG : P : 7 : 9 : 12
Book : paperback : Jason Goodwin : Picador : page 7 : line 9 : 12th word = was .. commanded

Labyrinths: Selected Stories and Other Writings : p : JLB : 4 : last : first
Book : paperback : Jorge Luis Borges : page 4 : last line : first word = the

The Wise Woman and Other Stories : p : GM&CY : 4 : 6 : last
Book : paperback : George MacDonald & Craig Yoe : page 4 : line 6 : last word = wise

However, the only way it would make sense is to write it like this: The wise king was commanded only three.

Unless, the numbers for the words also tells us where to place them in the sentence. If so, it might look something like this and we would need more info to complete the sentence.

Code:
                                       was
The    King  __ __ only three __ ... commanded ... wise.
first  2nd  3rd 4th 5th  6th  7th .... 12th ... last

edited (to correct the error from The Janissary Tree)

I'm thinking that the Whitechapel Foundation will be finding another note at their door. Possibly with a ^3 at the bottom corner.
