Too bad, the pub looked like more fun. It looks very creepy and out of the way. Thebruce, I don't blame you for not wanting to go there. If you do go, don't go alone.

I know the precise spot the gps points to, just can't remember what's there

Keep in mind that google maps are a little off sometimes. If you don't have a GPS, take a printout of the image to help remember what the exact spot looks like.

Now that I realize what's going on, I understand the poem a little more, and it's kind of funny:
Quote:

Damaged Facsimile Encased in Glass
Shaded by Stone and Asleep on Grass

The first two lines describe what is there and a little bit about where it is exactly.

Quote:
Unknowing Eyes, We Must Hope, Look Last

This is the funny line - basically, "we hope nobody outside the game stumbles upon it first."

Quote:
The Key is Found Looking Future to Past

Directions for decoding the code. Maybe more?

thebruce, is that a shelter on the right side of your image? I'm wondering if there's glass there and if the page might be stuck in there if it's not at the clock tower. It must be in a fairly open place for him to say we must hope unknowing eyes look last.

Nice work on the reversed base 64 Pavoreax!

Bruce,

How long is the trip there for you? It's only 2.5 hours from me. I would not be able to get out there for a little over a week though

EDIT: I can go to Galt Nov. 17th if no one goes first

Edit2: Might be able to go on 16th

oh it's definitely shorter than 2.5 hours. maybe 1/2 hour or so drive. If I can convince a friend, again, to make the trip with me. Otherwise, even bus is shorter than 2 1/2 hours =)

I'm fairly confident that the coords on google maps are accurate - the point is right on top of a grey smudge, and looks purposefully placed centered right on that spot...

the shelter is a gas station and cornerstore. The location is the start to a trail.

I am not sure that this makes any sense, but when I read the line about reading future to past, it made me think of counterclockwise. I wonder if that some how helps find the stone.

thebruce, this is the structure I meant in your flickr photo. It's hard to see what it is, but it resembles bus shelters that are scattered around where I live.

I'm also curious about this item that stands out in in songwraith's image:

Tres, I think that is an information sign about a the park. I could be a good place to look, however a lot more people would see it there than if it was hidden a little bit.

There are literally tens of thousands of little things hidden around the world in places just like this, thanks to an activity called geocaching. Items are hidden in bushes, under rocks, in holes, etc. and the coordinates are posted at the geocaching website. Geocachers load the coordinates into their GPS devices and set out to find the cache. When they find it, they leave their name in the log book kept with the cache, maybe exchange a small trinket. I'm sure most of us know about this and many have probably participated - it seems to be the kind of thing that would appeal to the same people who do ARGs.

Anyway, this drop reminds me of a geocache. That leads me to believe the item will be exactly where this picture is. Likely under a rock, somewhere on this small hill. It won't be near the main trail, or the information kiosk. You probably wouldn't be able to see it without poking around a little or looking under some rocks or branches.

well, twitter wasn't friendly tonight... I tweeted my adventure, but it didn't go through :'(

I decided just to spend the night on the hunt. And boy was it a hunt. I'll describe it in detail later, but suffice to say, I've got it... now to get this freaking jar open!

(photos, starts in the 2nd row, 11/03/08)

what a night...
