Losing Interest

Be patient.

At the beginning of the AI game, as those of you who were there for it remember, there was little else to the plot than the intimation that Evan Chan had died. In fact, that's all there was for -- as I remember it -- several months. This is moving rather more rapidly than the first unfiction game (already several mysteries to look into) and the quality of the sites is pretty up to snuff.

My intuition is that this is the 'Beast 2' -- the big one that the puppet masters of the first Beast had mentioned earlier. Also, there was a statement by the Wachowskis some months ago that the rest of the story, the story not covered in the movies would be told in video games. This may well be what they were referring to.

Tycho - the statement by the WBs is easily explained by the Enter the Matrix game - it tells a parallel story to Reloaded, filling in holes and giving early info about Revolutions (which we have only just begun to understand, but still...info is good)

About the hackers being unplugged, I really don't see why they would be. I can't really picture Neo and Co. hanging out in ftp servers posting cryptic messages that aren't spelled right...these people somehow sound too...immature...to be unplugged. I'm thinking they are a group of hackers, and judging from the latest batch of files (silvia), Beth is definitely one of them. Phil is probably one too, although I don't remember if the files hint at that at all... So Beth is just digging deeper and deeper, and will almost certainly discover the truth at one point. These hackers sound like they're coming close, mentioning machines touching the server and causing the spike (which I'm assuming is what caused Beth's research files to be deleted). So the machines saw that she was coming too close with all her research and just attacked the server? You'd think they'd have more finesse than that...the action just made the hackers think that something unnatural is going on, which is what the machines *don't* want. Strange.

Btw, a thread like this is necessary, I think. We need to keep the plot in mind, or else all the puzzles just become meaningless unrelated bits floating around...

Labyrinth

Quote:
So we saw this flux and burst of activity, and then down to nothing. Well, we saw the echoes, anyhow.

Definitely not a human footprint. This is a whomp on a huge scale that I am not sure any ordinary script could pack into such a little amount of access. The whole log is massive and ... well, unbelievable. Except it happened. You guys saw it, you all saw the spike. I'm surprised this whole subnet's not toast.

This could only have been one thing...

LABYRINTH Exclamation

From Beth's emails to Phillip...

Quote:
I'm not exactly sure what happened, but I saw a huge spike in my stats and when I went to password protect the archive directory I must have done something wrong as suddenly all of the data was gone.

There is a new project at work, one that could make quick work of this. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the application myself. However, there is a function on Friday. The office would be empty. Marcus has access. Is my sanity worth the risk?

As planned, I was working late on a project and told Marcus that I would do my best to get to the hotel on time. I explained that I'd put the stuff on his desk when he left and that I would give him his key when I got to the hotel. Everything was fine and the office slowly emptied out. I went into his office, knowing that he would have superuser access to the latest Labyrinth build. It was not a problem and I could have easily explained it all away.

But she was "caught", and now she's in too deep - probably in danger.

It was Labyrinth that caused the spike on little-boxes that caused her to lose her data - or was it erased intentionally Question

The plot thickens. Wink

Cool

So far I dont think beth or phil know anything about the hackers. I think that the hackers are looking on underscore sites because something happened while they were hacking it last time that caused a huge spike in activity (the footprint/sasquatch/oafs). There sort of seeing if they can reproduce that spike(second verse, same as the first) and accusing eachother (I have tiny feet=it wasnt me) of creating it. They've also speculated that no human hacker couldve screwed up little-boxes so bad and there looking for other explanations. Also ceasar mentions that before he broke the server even more (so they wouldnt get caught) he took all the information for himself. So I'm assuming that the rest of beths archive is mirrored; but hidden really cleverly on the paintover server.

Can you provide a link to where they said that? As far as I know the Wachowski's haven't made a public statement in a long, long time. They don't do that kind of thing. Now Joel Silver will talk his ass off, and I think I remember him saying something like this. Perhaps you're remembering something Joel saying. And I think he was probably referring to TheMatrixOnline. I hear there will be some plots played out in that game that were written by the Brothers. I personally don't believe this is Official anymore.

i've been following along, but this is news to me.
Quote:
Beth, with the aid of Phillip and their other buddies in the paranormal decide to find out what Metacortex knows by hacking the site and finding as much info as they can. They end up getting blocked and crashing the server. *when the server goes back online Oct. 1st the game begins for us* They are using the Aquapolis site as a backdoor but still have not been succesful. So, Beth is going to use the direct approach and just go through Marcus Ormonds office when everyone is at the meet and greet tonight. Which brings us to where we are now....
where did the info about phil and beth hacking and crashing the site come from?

if you had bothered to post the entire quote, you would notice it reads...

to me the plot so far is... You have our protaganists Beth and Phil who are friends and have interests in the unexplained and paranormal. Beth works at Metacortex and is also friends with CEO James Avery. Avery disappears and instead of a profile there is a cryptic message and image under his name in the directory. (if we can easily find this, surely Beth did as well).

Beth, with the aid of Phillip and their other buddies in the paranormal decide to find out what Metacortex knows by hacking the site and finding as much info as they can. They end up getting blocked and crashing the server. *when the server goes back online Oct. 1st the game begins for us* They are using the Aquapolis site as a backdoor but still have not been succesful. just my take on it

please notice the sections in bold. Mad

Simulacra: Good thinking. I agree.

I think the central part in the plot is the Labyrinthprogram. IMHO, the Labyrinth is an AI-program that just has reached self-awareness. It is therefore seeking to protect it's existence by erasing all the facts that can compromise it, hence the Spike in Beth's site (maybe she was "on" to it?). Maybe the Labyrinth has also erased as many facts around James Avery as it could (i e his info on the MetaCortechs site; encrypting the text and distorting his picture), and this is why he's so hard to track?

The same could be the case with the missing woman. How hany americans don't have credit- or bankhistory? Is it possible that the Labyrinth has erased that information?

Maybe the program is designed to protect it's masters (that could be Avery and the missing woman)? The next step of the evolution of the program could be to erase it's masters, and then reaching freedom?

I believe this would fit in nicely with the W bros storyline.

ok, for the folk who think this is all prematrix:
there would be no problem at all w/ creating AI. man lived in harmony w/ AI for a few years before the equal rights movement of robots.

and so naturally this is all in the matrix, at which point it doesnt really matter if this labryinth program gets 'found out' about or not.. as in its all just a 'game'... yknow?

Hi there, nice thread.

But..
Sorry, I just don't see Beth being a hacker.
What hacker would use his/her favourite band as a password or have their archive deleted without any backup?
That's more AOL-user-style, but not hacker-like. Twisted Evil

ecwilder:
Yep, we're inside the Matrix.
Are we?
What if each cycle of the Matrix goes to the approx. point when humans inside the Matrix would invent "real" A.I.?
What would an human made A.I. do inside the Matrix?
Would it know it's not real?
Or would it be all the same to the A.I., as couldn't tell the diference between "real" and "simulated" due to being a "simulation" itself?

Anyway, we could be kind of "inside" and "before" the Matrix at the same time, depending on how accurate the simulated world inside the Matrix is to the "real" history before the Matrix.

Another thought:
According o the timelines of the movies, M1 took place around 1999, so if time is consistant, we're actually in the timeline after Matrix: Revolutions, yet in the same cycle of the Matrix as in the movies (unless Thomas A. Anderson was the same and at the same company in each cycle).

Which, ergo, leads me to believe that the game, while being fun, is not meant to fit in the storyline of the movies.

What do you think?

Cheers,
Mac

Septembner 11th?

In Beth's investigations into the paranormal. The article about Fireworks in the woods. She states that "nerves were running high" obviously a reference to the Twin Towers. How does that fit into the world.. That was an event in our world not any matrix world.

How do we explain that?

Well, simple, history in our world = history in the Matrix world. Because the architect said so. Very Happy

Oh, hmm...never mind, I think I see your point. That brings up the interesting philosophical question of predestination and free will. If the Matrix begins in, say, 1980, with all the background history that the real world had in 1980, then will history follow the same course up through, say, 2003? No, that's impossible, the *people* aren't the same. I mean, George W. Bush isn't plugged into the Matrix, so how can he be president of the post-2000 Matrix US? That's really interesting...and same goes for Osama bin Laden and everyone else who has shaped our latest significant events...this actually makes no sense at all... can someone straighten this out?

The question that is bothering me now: Say the Matrix begins in 1980 with human history. Just to pick a random example, Fidel Castro was leader of Cuba before that as well as after that. So what do all the Cuban coppertops think (assuming that the Matrix isn't one giant megacity...if it is, that just raises lots of other confusing issues)? Is he being simulated by a computer program to avoid changing history? Maybe the significant leader people who shaped history are all computer programs...I mean, when the architect said that the Matrix was formed based on human history, they showed a pic of W. Bush, implying that he was in the Matrix history as well. But then that brings up the interesting question of who exactly shapes history...and who is insignificant (the coppertops, presumably, i.e. the general public...that's depressing). The Matrix movies never really explore this, they just leave the existance and functionality of the Matrix as a given and move on from there. That's an annoying lack of depth, considering how developed other things are...

I've just realised that we've been basing all our theories on the assumption that they reload the matrix at the same point in human history each time... I don't like that idea.

Why?

Who'sto say the matrix needs reloading at a given point in human history? Potentially, the matrix just gets reloaded when the program starts to go pear-shaped... which means the machines might bounce this matrix in 2003, but the next matrix might make it through to 2005 or 2230 even... IMHO it all depends on how many people start rejecting the program (in Revolutions, they've freed more minds in the last six months...)

Just another theory to toss 'round... and confuse things. Very Happy
