Hi There,

I just got the following message from Joseph:

Quote:
Joseph has sent you a message:
Hello! It is me Joseph... I am near Hopetown, Uganda!

Checking on Alan Hackston's phone..he dropped it! Dunno if I am getting through to you but hey it is worth a try. I will keep playing with this thing til I can get it working properly. I must go, it is crazy round here! J.

To read the rest of Joseph's message:
http://www.extranet...

When I click on the link, I arrived at a page that asked me to confirm a new password, which I did.

I now seem to have access to Alan's Reuters mailbox with a few messages from his mom, Sukie and Joseph.

Somehow now I've managed to get Joseph to activate his phone.
His gps is turned on... any ideas on what do to next???

ok, I got Joseph to turn his GPS on and loaded the infrastructure map from flickr onto the satellite imagery.

This seemed to help.

Anyone else get to this point?

Huh?

@Catmtl... I didn't receive that message from Joseph today... however, it's the same message we read on Alan's blog.

Did you get this by email? If so, did anyone else get it?

So, to answer your question, I'm not at that point because your message is the first I've heard of this. But, since this is a collaborative game--as far as we all understand it--you've advanced the game forward for all of us.

Thanks for that.

But, could you elaborate on how you got Joseph to turn on the phone's gps features? What else did he have you do? What else did you tell him?

(Am I the only one to think that something doesn't "feel" right...?)

@jlr1001 I ensure you this is very real.

You can read the information in the stream posted.
When I logged on, Joseph was responding. I told him to push the yellow button and enter the pin, as indicated onthe pdf of the quantum sat website.

He headed south, and now I received the following message:

Quote:
Joseph has sent you a message:
I have found a woman who is very ill. She has a bad fever and is vomiting. There are mosquitos everywhere. Looks like she will die if I do not do something. Can you help me find out what is wrong?

any ideas?

Man, talk about two of the most common symptoms ever... But as for mosquito viruses Malaria, West Nile virus, Yellow Fever, Dengue.

And catmtl you might want to go back and pull the link you posted. I think everyone's key is different, you know like a temporary password.

@catmtl

Let me ratchet back my previous position... I'm glad that the game is moving forward, but I'm miffed that the message--one that we already had--was resent, but only to either one person or a limited list... or, there was a technical issue and some who should have received it didn't.

We've been pacing in circles here for a few days, so it made me feel a little cheated to not have a chance to be in on your chat with Joseph...

But, thank you for following through with the lead and moving it forward.

@degravedi

The login reset doesn't seem to matter. If I bring up that url, without actually filling out the form to change the password, and then access the chat log through another window/tab, I'm able to get it.

Also, can someone post a log of the chat? My Firefox (verson 3 running on Linux) is cropping most of the text, so it's kind of hard to follow what was said.

Thanks!

Like I said, I think that key works as a temporary password allowing you to access the user area without using a password. Mine's different from catmtl's. If you log out, the login wants you to enter your email address and password (unless you use the link again, then it automatically logs you in). And when using the message interface, it uses your name in the appropriate spot.

Thus each person will be able to help Joseph through on their own. I had to have him press the yellow buton and enter the password, load the map, ect. too. Here's a general transcript (edited a bit since I was fooling around to see what words triggered Joseph's AI).

There are some mild spoilers if you're trying to figure out the right triggers for yourself.
Quote:
Joseph: I don't understand this phone. Can you have a look for some instructions. That would help me.
Devasa: Press the yellow button and enter your PIN code to activate SLIK GPS features.
Joseph: OK I am trying...
Joseph: Ok I have done that. What can you see now?
Devasa: Satellite imagery now shows a map.
Joseph: I am looking for the Red Cross messenger. She is only here for 24 hours. Someone said she is in the Administration Office? Where is it? Do you have any clues? Someone told me it is in the south. i am going to head that way.
Devasa: Where are you?
Joseph: Hopetown, it is in Uganda.
Joseph: I have found a woman who is very ill. She has a bad fever and is vomiting. There are mosquitos everywhere. Looks like she will die if I do not do something. Can you help me find out what is wrong?
Sukie: Perhaps it would be wise to seek help from another source. The British Red Cross website might aid you.
Devasa: Could it be Yellow Fever?
Joseph: No, I've seen people who have that and that's not it.
Devasa: How about Malaria?
Joseph: You're right it must be malaria. Can you see if there's a first aid hut in camp?
Devasa: Yes, west of you.
Joseph: OK. I will try and find it. I will let you know when we are there.
Joseph: She's in hospital now. I got her to the hut and they took her to town on a bike.

Ah... so the assumption that this is a collaborative experience might not be correct...

Darn... I wish that it was otherwise.

I think I'll hang back and lurk in case it moves away from a solo game.

Was the email received a reply to an email you sent and if so, to what email address? This also does not appear on Alan's blog although it has been said above that it did.

I found the site with my earlier dns work and went through a similar procedure. Using the forgot password link you can effectively register with your email address and go back and create an account

I just recieved the email too, with the link http://www.extranet121964alertquantumsatnet.org/start.php?key=feafb4db1f3551fe662fd81811f21091.

Once I opened it, I was prompted to enter a new password. It doesn't matter what password you enter.

I then received a message from Joseph: "I need to figure out this phone. We need to find some instructions about how it works..."

I asked him to turn on the GPS feature on his phone, and it worked - I can see that he is in Hopetown.

My conversation went pretty much the same way as degravedi, but I can't get Joseph to mention the sick woman, even though I say everything degravedi did.

(EDIT: Now he mentioned her, I just had to wait some more. I'll wait to see what response I get once he is there...)

On the Alertnet page you can choose a "map overlay" - this is of course where we should put the URL of the Hopetown infrastructure map. I tried using the URL of just the image, but that didn't work - you have to enter the URL of the flickr page ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/alanhackston/2938260122/ )

Its over - messenger found but I wont give any more details as it would spoil the gain. The clues on the site are obvious. Logging out then back in 10 mins later will tend to advance the story for you

Note, if it askes you to find web sites, use direct cut and paste of the text

Hi Alan here!

I've found Joseph again and got my phone back. Joseph hasn't stopped talking about you helping him find the messenger. Just wanted to say a personal thanks.

I've gotten to know Joseph in the short time I've been here and he's a great kid. There's just so many others with the same story.

I'm beginning to realise just how important the International tracing and message services the Red Cross offer are.

Anyway, signing off now. Bye.
