Theories!

Alright, here's my idea:
DI 1: Answer is Howling Mad, or HM
DI 2: Answer is (maybe) DISC
DI 3: Answer is T
DI 4: seems to me the answer is R
DI 5: Ahem...
The word 't' appears in almost every word. So does u and i, but the word 'one' is repeated, leading me to think that another letter is included: T.

So: HM (DISC maybe) T R T, so maybe an anagram of the letters?

STOP - Edit time! Maybe the DISC is either D or C? I'd side with D, leaving the word at HMDTRT or HMCTRT.

</theory>

DIs

I think DI 4's answer has to be Projectyl's "VARNISHING". I'd buy "T" for DI 3, since that's the "link", but I prefer the entire "DEMONSTRATIONS".

Today's DI includes only 10 letters. I didn't find a one-anagram for the letters, but there are LOTS of two-word anagrams. The 10 happen to be 10 of the 12 letters often quoted as the most common in English (see "etaoin shrdlu") except for H and D. Could the answer be "HD" as in High Definition? Did I miss an anagram? Is there something in the letter counts? (I'm too tired to count them right now! Smile )

CAS RN#s as index for possible message in video warning

dextroamphetamine 51-64-9
Spanish Fly cantharidin 56-25-7
caffeine 58-08-2
epinephrine 51-43-4
ritalin 298-59-9

Geez, I really feel like these should be indexes into the video's drug warning somehow. It has already given us a hint, true, but it didn't involve the monospace font and each line breaking after exactly 70 characters.

I agree with you, even though by my count every line doesn't break at 70 either. If you put two spaces after each period ending a sentence, all but the fourth line does. And I really liked the idea of 6 lines x 70 characters = 420... especially since the cannabinoids were mentioned before the italicized drugs. But even if the lines don't break perfectly, because of the perfect spacing and awkward wording of the message, I feel like there's more there than just the message received by the words at the end of the line.

But if we do have enough information to figure out, I sure haven't been able to do it yet. Please let me know if you do.

Whomever posted earlier this week had 113-45-1 for Ritalin but that actually seems to be Methylphenidate (which isn't related to this at all, I imagine.)

That was I. I used the CAS RNs from Wikipedia -- Ritalin redirects to Methylphenidate and has no separate entry.

Note that the ChemExper site gives 298-59-9 for both Ritalin hydrochloride and methylphenidate hydrochloride -- I don't know if those are the same as plain Ritalin (plain methylphenidate has the number I originally gave). So certainly a possibility that the new number is the number to use and good point to note the alternate number, though the original one may still be a possibility.

The ten letters used (AEILNORSTU) are the ten one-point letters in Scrabble. I don't know if the answer's just SCRABBLE, or if there's something else to notice.

Saturday's Second DI

This is perhaps alluding to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane:

Quote:
Was it He who battled inner wars, struck with terror, stuck in a hard place, had all hope taken, expecting to fail, felt frail, fearing vanishing, leading up to this?

The Bible passages are Matthew 26:36-45 and Mark 14:32-41

Can any of you code experts find something in the above numbers?

I didn't see anything good in the letter counts (can be checked here: http://www.simonsingh.net/The_Black_Chamber/frequencyanalysis.html ).

FWIW, URANOTILES is in Webster's Third, and URANOLITES is at dictionary.com, though neither of those looks all that useful.

New DI:

Quote:
Grief can inspire as well as
destroy. Poet Elizabeth Barrett
Browning was sent into a deep
depression by her beloved
brother's drowning, and then
made the most holy connection.

My best guess as to an answer:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Browning/drowning sticks out; the logical "connection" between the two would be CROWNING.

Hm. This could be a coincidence, but I see a CROW in CROWNING, an OWL in HOWLING MAD, a RAT in DEMONSTRATIONS, and a CRAB in SCRABBLE... I don't see one in VARNISHING, though, and I really don't think that one's wrong.

Well, 'battled' can become 'brattled'? Doesn't help a bit, but it's still an idea incase VARNISHING doesn't work out. 'rat' appears in brattled, to fit in with Projectyl's theory, but there's already a rat in DEMONSTRATIONS.

E.B. Browning info

Her full name is Elizabeth Barrett Moulton Browning. The name not included in the DI makes me think of a snake molting in light of our current theme.

Wikipedia says: "The subsequent death of her brother, Edward (called "Bro"), who drowned in a sailing accident at Torquay in 1840, had a serious effect on her already fragile health. When she returned to Wimpole Street, she became an invalid and a recluse, spending most of the next five years in her bedroom, seeing only one or two people other than her immediate family."

It looks like in the late 1840s she wrote a epic/novel poem, Aurora Leigh, which makes 15 references to the word "drown". It was published in 1856. This poem was written during an Italian literary phase known as Risorgimento which means "The Resurgence" or "Rising Again" in Italian. Book Nine of the (very long) poem uses Biblical imagery about Moses' brother, Aaron, and The Song of Songs (but I only looked at the poem briefly).

I can only guess that her "most holy connection" was her marriage to Robert Browning in August 1846 which restored her physical and emotional health and further propelled her writing career.

While this is interesting to those into history and/or literature, I'm not sure if it has given any clues or helped this game at all.

AEILNORSTU

Out on a limb: looking at the Scrabble 1-pointer DI, irrational TREASONS is SENATORS, and "to one's state--alas, still no soul" could mean ALAS-KA. Alaska Senators are LISA Murkowski + TED Stevens = anagram of DETAILS/DILATES.

I couldn't decipher other lines except that "isolationist trials" seems to refer to boiling down to 10 letters, and "ONE unites in unnatural RITUALS" seems to refer to the set of unique letters.

In addition: "untie RELATIONS AS" = SENATOR LISA

I've had a semi-interesting exchange with Xander on The Garden Wall; check the "Who's Next?" thread for details. He seems to suggest we should contact Douglas Kressig. I've entered "Use CAS RNs to show antidote." in the Common Questions box; any other ideas?

On the 24th sent an email to contactSPLATcitizensofvirtue.com with a "forward to attn. of Douglas Kressig at GKP".
Mentioning this as my lack of any reply prolly indicates that another email address might be needed. Dunno
