Something's definitely off about Jack Bass's messages... he's got the last message in every thread, and in those messages he includes odd little two-line slogans after his signoff:

Quote:
Carrying a heavy load?
Watch the new Virtual Virtue video!

Need an approach you can put your hands on?
It's all about doing what's right for you!

Is your life going down the tube?
Make sure your faith is showing.

Is gambling taking you to task?
Trust in a higher power to reach your resolution.

Wear your victory over gambling boldly!
The world wants to see your strength on display.

God will be your leader!
It's up to you to let him be your symbol!

EDIT: Oh! Read the last words. LOAD VIDEO ON YOUTUBE SHOWING TASK RESOLUTION, BOLDLY DISPLAY LEADER SYMBOL. Huh.

Great job, Proj!

Look at the last word of each line:

Dang, and they block YouTube here at work, so I can't go looking Sad

I haven't joined the Yahoo group as a member yet, so there may well be some "Members Only" materials that will be helpful.

After reading all the messages, the only things that particularly stood out for me were Jack Bass's signature quotes at the end of several messages (they read like DIs), and the messages that discussed specific poker hands.

ETA: Aaaaand I'm a bit late on this one. Smile

Load Video

So, I suppose this means we have to upload a video? Which leader symbol do we display? And how does this help?

I assume this is to get us to do one of the tasks mentioned, yes?

Well, maybe we are supposed to perform one of the 20 tasks on the job list and post a YouTube video of us doing so. (Weren't we supposed to have the opportunity to do good in the real world, as with the sock drive?). In our video we should display the appropriate smiley symbol associated with the job leader whose task we are performing. Does that make sense?

Guys, the last public message is #142. There are #143 messages in the group. We might have to access that one for more information.

As for the symbol and the task resolution, I'm going to gamble (behehehe) that it has to do with the War Stories thread. Something popped out when Roger Anstruther was mentioning his game:

Quote:
Okay, so I was playing at a pretty loose home table. Some idiots have gotten
lucky, and I was a bit short stacked. I raise with pocket 9's, get two callers.
Flop comes J94 rainbow. I raise all in, get one caller. The other guy has J9.
Turn is a blank. River is a freaking jack!

I know that I'm probably grasping here, but maybe not?

I think we're supposed to upload videos of us doing all twenty, include the appropriate smiley, and submit links to the videos via that "Join the Chain" form.

This... this could take a while.

That feels unlikely to me. My feeling was that this ARG had a definite time limit (which is why the hinting is coming fast and furious at this point). Would they really put something involving videotaping and uploading TWENTY tasks in the next-to-last week?

Has anybody signed up for the group yet? I'm having issues with work filters, but there is a significant discrepancy between the post count visible and the number of posts we can read.

I can only assume that we need to get in to this group to be able to see what the other 30+ messages are about.

Some of the tasks would definitely be difficult to do in a short amount of time and would require a lot of set-up:
Chaperone a field trip for kids with disabilities.
Participate in a charity walkathon.

Guys, remember the Lord bracelet task? We didn't have anything big or fancy. I think what we should do is remain simple, yet still doing what they ask. Building the house seems like a bit of a stretch, maybe set up something like a Lego set? Use a few dolls? Razz Anyways, school time, I'll see what I can do later tonight. Excellent solving!

EDIT: So what now with the Mirdek clue?

The Yahoo! group requires moderator approval to join, and asks you to submit a brief explanation of why you want to join. (It's a standard-ish Yahoo! Groups thing, I think.) I tried something along the lines of "I think this group can help me be more Diligent." No word yet, but time will tell.

I've just asked Xander on Facebook if uploading videos of us doing the tasks sounds like something that would help the Seven. Hopefully he'll be able to confirm/deny. (EDIT: He says he doubts we'll need 20, but that "as the prophet Bruce said, can't start a fire without a spark". So yeah, looks like we're on the right track. Smile )

Re: Mirdek - Xander seems to be suggesting that the Mirdek clue was only for getting that PAGE'S TITLE message out of the cards. Which is kind of a shame, since the standard Mirdek correspondence doesn't actually work that way. Maybe we'll get bits of the 25-letter initialization vector every time we link a video, or something?

Final WI!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
For each of the six letters in turn, take each of the four sentences as a five-digit binary number where words that contain that letter are 1's and words that don't are 0's, and turn to letters in the traditional 1=A, 2=B, etc. method to get GRAC ERER OUTE SCAS HTOB OARD. (Incidentally, "ARE" was the right one for the first inspiration, and for some reason the one about the man from the east must be "DEE". No idea why.)

Ah, no wonder I couldn't figure it out! I was trying almost the same thing but I didn't use DEE. Excellent job, Projectyl! *huggle* Awesome solve. So what happens now? Do ya reckon our Seventh Seven is Jack? I guess that would make the videos the necessary task to save him this week. Maybe we should set up a joint Youtube account? I'll be leaving for holidays soon but I'll try and record one tomorrow at school by borrowing a camera.
