Yeah, I thought it was cool. And appropriate.
I'll cease with this threadjack now...

Progress! Hey, there again. It's been a while. Okay, so the like, cut-outs on the paper at the bottom left of death screen are part of a file called 2B4892. I thought this looked familiar, and then I realized:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It was the number of the case file found under the journal! Yay! Also, the two things are the same size and shape. I printed them both out, cut out the holes, and layed them over, and I got this message: "Andy McGee got what he had coming. There was only one cure for Andy McGee"

Thoughts?

It could be a second path to the answer to put in the text box on vindicated.

That's possible. I hope that's not what this other code is too. It's already hurt my head too much for me to be let down. Haha.

I was totaly" Who the heck is Andy McGee?" until I remembered that Drew wasn't his real name. Duh.

Anyone going to the show next week?

I'll be there at the show on the 11th. Faeryqueen and Faciane, if you are there also, the first round is on me. And, per the hint dropped on Dan Hamilton's myspace page, I think we should
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
request the "Monkey Song."

When I was out looking for the marker originally, I wondered if it was going to read "AM" or "DR." I even speculated on whether there would be a fake clue under a "DR" marker, with the real clue under an "AM" marker nearby - that sort of thing was the favorite trick of a Dungeon Master I played with in the early 1980's. It was nice to see the name used, anf the police reoprt used, in the cut-out message; that closed two loose ends.

Deadline hell is over for me at the moment, so I'll start taking a look at the wiki.

The show's tonight!

The end of the game, or the start of the next phase?

Whichever, I'll be keeping an eye on this to lend a hand where possible!

I'll just have a still camera. Hopefully, someone there will have a phone that can shoot video, in case something happens. I don't think The Derby is set up for web casting, which is a pity.

Gina's last gig

sowasred2012 wrote:

Sorry for the delay, but after I got home I was exhausted for an entire day. My friend and I arrived at the club right at 8:00. When we gave the woman at the door the printout for free admission, she gave us a funny look, then waved over a tall albino-looking man in a white tuxedo.

He led us into the Derby's back room, where Gina and another musician (a violinist?) were doing a sound check. Gina, who is *much* hotter in person than I expected, even after seeing her photos, nodded in our direction as the albino led us past the stage and out a side door, and ushered us into a stretch limousine with tinted windows. The barrier was up, so we couldn't see the driver. The limo bar was stocked with several varieties of bottled water, with names including "Del Rio" and "Downey Reservoir;" all with the initials "DR." (This would later prove important.) After about 20 minutes, the engine started, and the limo took off.

We rode around for about half an hour. We couldn't make anything out through the windows, but I don't think we were ever on any freeways. The limo stopped, and the door was opened by a dwarf in a tassled cap. After asking for our cell phones - which I must admit, made me slightly nervous - he asked us to enter a small house. I looked around, and while it was dark, I think we were somewhere in the Hollywood Hills. After showing us where the bathrooms were in the house, the Little Person gestured to the living room and said, "Your puzzle awaits. I'll be here when you have the answer."

In the room was a couch and a coffee table. The table had an odd pattern on it that I immediately recognized as the projection of a tesseract. On the table was a battered wicker box with a combination lock, a book that looked like Gina's journal, and a Rubik's cube that was all white, with letters on each face instead of the colors.

There were also two bullets.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Sorry, but I couldn't resist. Very Happy Except for the part about Gina being hotter in person, the above is total B.S. The show was a party to celebrate Gina's CD and the end of the game. The real Dan Hamilton was there, and so were Caroline/Heather, the guy who played Andy/Drew's "wingman" Robert Hall, various people who'd been in photos on the characters' MySpace pages, and Gina's real-life husband Michael Borys, the PuppetMaster-in-chief from 42 Entertainment who designed the game.

Gina played a great set, with the violinist joining in on a couple of songs. She closed with a new song about hope and lessons learned that was a strong thematic coda to the game. As her encore, she played "The Monkey Song."

"The Monkey Song," which the fictional Dan Hamilton mentions in a post on fictional Gina's MySpace page, is a song real Gina wrote several years ago. Real Gina professs to hate it, and Michael and Real Dan profess to love it; and the mention in Fictional Dan's comment is part of a game Michael and Real Dan play to try to get Real Gina to play the song as often as possible. In short, it's an inside, ongoing private joke that Michael embedded in the game. I fell for it.

I've got to say, the intertwining of real and fictional characters, and the existence of some real characters with fictional counterparts, is an esthetic element I really admire in this game, and which, to my mind, elevates it above an "average" ARG and into the realm of true interactive literary fiction. It's like the closing chapter of Heinlein's "The Number of the Beast" come to life, or the premise of Phillip K. Dick's "Ubik" taken, twisted, and repackaged. I also really respect the careful attention the designers placed on every detail, and the deep level of backstory they created for almost every character, while leaving the motivations of a few - Sue and Rose, for instance - still shrouded in mystery. Seriously, this is the only game I've ever seen that would be the legitimate subject of a thesis for a Ph. D. in English, and it certainly wasn't dry or boring!

While talking to Michael after Gina's set, he disclosed that there had been tentative plans for another phase of the game, had there been enough interest. When I said something like "I guess you're saving that part for her next CD," he just grinned widely. While this game is over, Gina is writing new music, and Michael is designing new ARG's, so it won't surprise me at all if a trailhead to revisit this world appears somewhere down the road.

While this was Gina's "last gig" (for awhile?) in the world of this game, she'll be playing in various clubs, both solo and with her Led Zeppelin tribute band Moby Chick. I know music well enough to recognize that Gina has some serious guitar chops. I also think she's a very talented lyricist and composer. I'll be bumping this thread from time to time when I hear about her gigs. I think that's justified as a thank-you to Gina and Michael for a fun game, and also because with that pair, it's just a matter of time before one of her gigs is a trailhead.

I apologize if the leg pulling I opened this post with and this use of spoiler space offends anyone. I am rather curious to see if there really are people who refuse to read spoiler space, especially after the next line:

I don't know where that humongous iguana went to, but that's the PuppetMasters' problem.

[Edited to correct two small typos]

Thanks for filling us in Cap.

If I've taken anything away from your experience that night, it's to never trust a dwarf... Smile

Man, I really wish I could have been there. It sounded like a lot of fun! If they do decide to "resurrect" this ARG at a later date, I will totally play again. For something small and rather quick it was a great experience. I wish we could have solved that last code though...Anyway, I'll definitely try to make it out to a show sometime.
