Could you possibly just record the video with a camera?

the comic looks like a page from love and rockets

and just a little bit of background for people not from the bay area

oaklandish is a pretty well known institution here. they sell t shirts and such out of a giant van usually at local farmers markets and such. the tree thing is their logo.

I've got this friend, he's a Latin teacher

And I got a rough translation of the box.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
At first, with no direction from me, he responded: "Praise god on the eve? of lightness? but with the holies to infinity / the powers of divine nonchalance?" Some of it makes no sense.

After I mentioned that "eva lucienae" was probably someone's name, he came back with: That makes sense. OK, try this: "Praise God [Eva Lucienae] but with holiness endlessly; the powers of the divine are [nonchalant]." The "laudite" is throwing me - it should either be "laudate" (praise) or "plaudite" (applaud). The "at" (which means "but") is also tricky.

So basically, it sounds like it's saying "Hella infinite rock on, Eva Lucien, Goddess of Divine Nonchalance." Although albeit more respectably. Wink

Man, I gotta learn the spoiler tag better for this site.

Yup!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It occurred to me that I couldn't tell if it was an imperative or referential. Which is to say, was it "Hey, you! Eva! You should praise god endlessly!" or if it's "Praise the goddess Eva endlessly." So I asked my teacher friend, who responded: laudite is a plural imperative, telling multiple someones (you guys? the powers of divine nonchalance?) to praise a masculine God. Eva could be the direct address, but Lucienae shouldn't be (unless her last name is plural but her first name is singular). See, it's messy.

Hey Liz, I actually have access to a video to DVD recorder... if you mail it to me, I'm sure I could get it online. PM me if you want more info.

I believe the building at 580 California only has 23 storeys... so there is no Suite 2400. :O

Also I don't think anyone who's left a message with the M2MC has ever heard back from them.

Movie/Latin/Daylight Savings

I was just rereading the posting where the Latin teacher translated the Latin unprompted and sort of stumbled over Eva Lucienae translating it as the "eve of lightness" - anything to do with timing? Daylight savings is coming up this weekend....

I started rethinking this because Melissa is looking over the tape again because I think she is trying to record it to put on the web and realized that the Latin being chanted in the background is the same Latin that is on the box. So that seems like where we should be focusing for clues...

Thoughts?

Whoa, it's the same Latin as on the box? Freak out!

So, that might suggest that the Latin on the box wasn't just an affection, but if people were actually there chanting it... is there a Cult of Eva?

Btw, to note, the date given on the tape's casing, 6/89, is 8 months after Eva disappeared, according to the fliers Eddie made up for Detective Chen.

Also, because Organelle said something on IRC back that first time that made me think of this a while ago, and I'm thinking of dates now, Eva disappeared a year and a day before the Loma Prieta earthquake. It could be nothing, it could be something. It could be wacky red herrings until we see something else indicating otherwise. I dunno.

re: Daylight Savings... since Daylight Savings is ending, shouldn't we be getting less light? I'm so bad with time, don't ask me. Very Happy
