Robotic Nonchalants

ever notice how, at least for the most part, these two walk through heavy blaster fire without so much as a scratch?
though R2-D2 seems far more in tuned into divine nonchalance than C3PO.

just thought i'd put that out there... :3

Ha! Good one ever, I got quite a chuckle out of that one.

Well, I think it would be ok to explain exactly what happened on Wed night.

Me, Jay, Jenpop, Ever and fORneme were chosen to attend a meeting in the city. We met in front of an old record store (a big square "safe Z" was painted on the ground) and we were told by the owner to wait for a few minutes. After a while I was called on my cell and told to enter the basement of the store.

The scene was quite eerie/comical really. Every person was dressed in a robe/mask of some sort. The masks kind of resembled an old man... but really it was just a wrinkled old face. The lights were out, candles were lit and eerie music was playing in the background. No cloaked figures talked, we were only told to move in front of 5 boxes (one for each of us) using hand signals. After waiting a few minutes, Drybones himself emerged and began to explain what we were doing here (not before our hands were moisturized and we sang a quite cheerful rendition of "Let is Snow"). It turns out that the Jejune institute is recruiting goons at the rate of "4 dozen new members every 3.12 hours" and "stickers and posters are not enough to face this threat." More or less, we have been chosen to lead a real-world operation in the city on April 30th.

In the boxes we were each given a disguise of some sort, multiple information cards (like the ones Drybones was giving out at the GDC), a hobo coin, instructions about the operation on the 30th, and a $10 drink coupon at a local bar down the road. After we were dismissed we hurried to the bar for a few drinks/plan our mission.

----------

This is where we need your help. We need anyone/everyone to show up. This is where we will get more people involved in this experience. During this time, we will be in character. Our goal is to act as much as a "nonchalant" or "Savant" as we can. Costume is not required, but encouraged. This is what we should strive for:

Very eccentric/eye catching clothing should be worn. We should also have specific roles (which can be switched up mid-operation). We need at least one "shouter" (for lack of a better term) drawing attention via chants/strange ramblings. At least a handful of people to approach passers-by with fliers, maybe dancers (reminiscent of Ornithopter Jumpsuit). And maybe a "jejune goon" to "attack" us at various points.

Also, I think we should create a mini "induction" for the passerby. Such as a mission to go down a few blocks and come back with information, such as what drybones was doing at the GDC. Get people really involved if they are interested.

Not to mention, at the end of this operation, there will be a "march" of sorts down the streets of SF to [location omitted] which will pass RIGHT BY the Jejune Institute on 580 California. This will prove to be quite interesting, because we think there MAY be an ambush.

Many people will be showing up on the 30th, especially with Jenpop behind us. She knows many people who love these kind of events.

Overall, we see this as a quasi flashmob/recruitment for the EPWA.

If you have any ideas, FEEL FREE TO POST Very Happy

BTW, if you need to know where to find eccentric clothing, just go to local thrift shops. A place near me has a lot of ancient electronics as well, I think I'm going to bring some things as props (old laptops, ancient radios Etc)

Overall, it is going to be a BLAST!

point necromancy but i have another thing to add to this:

Quote:
Now that evening, we had found the right building, but there were no markings and nothing else out there except a stern looking dude smoking a cigarette. Razz We just acted like we knew what we were doing, which I find to be a great way to get away with a lot of things in this town.

Anyway, a couple weeks later, briareosH posted his photos, and Organelle/Tetranym was saying something about what he found some evening on IRC, so up I went! And I found le markings!

So things to note here: the symbols found here had an x in the round part, not a dot or another circle or just empty as we've seen before. I wasn't sure if that was significant or not at the time.

looking at this:

it seems the NC symbol with an x in the middle, aside from a circle/dot, means 'beware of false nonchlanace'

so then i wonder why those were in that area...?

ALSO! not really related to anything but i just remembered where i've seen something like the nonchalance symbol shape before... took me a while to track it down

In other news

I was in line at a taqueria and there were two guys in line who were dead ringers for Cornelius and Trey. I didn't talk to them, but... I wondered.

Flyer etc.

Hey now look here at this spiffy flyer:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/37054397@N03/3443572456/in/photostream/

Can't remember anyone pointing to it. Tatami always makes a nice warm background.

Gathering: bullhornage -- good, bad, indifferent? Mine is 10 watts, within the law that is generally observed; of course there is another sub-section that would ensnare any pedestrian bullhorn user -- but they never use it.

whoa. nice. where'd they get that? was the goon at the GDC handing them out? we might need some jejune stooges to come in slightly less flamboyant, but still hippy-type, clothing to pass those out. we'll have a little in-fight amongst ourselves :p

i know from experience that bullhorns aren't a problem as they're rarely over the wattage that requires a sound permit. just don't aim it at anyone close by. also boom boxes are fine if anyone has one just don't bring anything super heavy cause we will be walking at some point. might as well make the most of this considering there's a very likely chance we'll be booted from the square fairly quickly once we get there.

IMPORTANT: in the event we're kicked out, meet on the intersection on post and stockton. i think that sidewalk chunk and the little island will be a big enough meeting place should we get booted. it'll be public space and they can't move us from there.

Re: Flyer etc.

Union square is a public forum and covered by the city's park code,
so a heads up,...
ANY AMPLIFIED SOUND AT ALL REQUIRES A PERMIT!
With the tensions over the destruction and massive cleanup bill from the pillowfight all the parks are on high alert for anything smacking of flash mobery.

Just Sayin',
drunken shenanigans, stickering, bullhorns and so on, are definitely gonna put a real quick end to the promotion, and probably make some nice hard working people's jobs much harder.

Correct, sir. But these dudes looked like they could've been the guys in the drawing. Actually, I passed a Hip Hop Shoe Repair flier this morning, and Cornelius may not be a match. But the other dude could've been Trey. But anyway...

re: that flier Tungsten posted: yah, I've seen that. That's the one that I got from the Jejune representative at GDC, that Drybones wanted me to fetch. I've been really slack at posting pictures the last couple-three months.

re: the 30th, Soggy brings up a good point: there's been a lot of city attention (and not good attention) being focused on flash mobs. Primarily, the problem hasn't been groups gathering, but the fact that two recent events -- the St. Valentine's Day pillow fight, and a pie fight -- have left messes the city has had to clean up. The feathers from the pillow fight in particular cost the city thousands of dollars to handle, because they gummed up the fountain works at Justin Herman Plaza.

We should be careful. I think we'll be fine, but most importantly, what I want to stress is that whatever you're planning, please follow the ethic of "leave no trace," meaning take everything you bring. And ideally, just bring your funky funky selves and easy-to-carry props.

Seriously, LEAVE NO TRACE. For real.

Everfalling, rock on with the contingency plan. If you're asked to leave, or told to stop doing something, just comply, it's not worth it. I like Everfalling's idea of regathering at the corner of Post and Stockton. That's the northeast corner of Union Square, and you can hang out at the intersection. We won't be there for very long anyway, so no worries.

Since the location of the after-party is still supa-sekrit, I've been trying to think of contingency plans in case anyone gets lost or is late or can't make it until later:

1) I'll update the facebook event page once we get there, so you can check there to know where to go.
2) I'll post here, too.
3) I set up a twitter account (username: epwa30th) and I can post the data there too.
4) Hopefully if I have time to make them, I'll have little sealed envelopes or cards or something that say "SHOULD YOU GET LOST" that you can open in case of emergency. Wink

Lab.

I have a nice white lab coat I can bring for someone to wear, if that would be a good thing for a Jejune goon. I don't care if it gets trashed, as long as I get it back. If so, let me know ... I'll need to put a name tag on it to cover up the extant institutional logo stitching, so I'm up for name suggestions. If not needed, one less thing to carry.

Jay,

Love the "if you get lost" idea! It'd be perfect, especially if there are a lot of people flying around!

Since the day is approaching fast, maybe we should start thinking up of some chants?

Also, picket signs, banners, etc. would be an awesome idea!

And tungsten, I think bringing an extra lab coat would be great for someone who is without a costume of some sort.

Should we meet up before hand? Maybe travel via bart or something? I think a Nonchalance bart ride would be quite funny
