Finding my first game
I'm new at this.

I've read about ARGs many times, but this is my first time actually seeking one out. I was hoping that one of the members of these forums could help direct me to a game to start with.

Since this forum was called Meta, and this subforum suggested posting questions, it seemed to be OOG (Terminology, SWEET!) I thought this would be a good place to start.

First, welcome aboard. There's not really an easy answer to "What game should I start with?" It all depends. Probably the best thing to do is to check out the News and Rumors forum, since that's where all the new games go first. Read the first couple of pages of any of the threads. Do that with a few of them until something captures your interest. You probably want something that has actually started but isn't too far along yet so you don't have to read through 20 pages just to get caught up (though it isn't really THAT hard to do) So, look for threads that have 5-10 pages, see if the first few pages intrigue you, and if so, hop in. It's okay to shop around, too, and play a game for a while, then move on if it takes a turn you don't like or something. Or try a few at once and see which one develops in interesting ways. That's what I did, anyway.

The other option is to get into a game that's already going on and do a lot of reading. This is actually another good way to learn the ins and outs of ARGing. It helps to do that if the game has a fairly decent wiki, but just reading the thread(s) can work too.

Eventually you'll find PMs whose work you like, or players you enjoy working with particularly, or themes that appeal to you. Then it gets easier to pick and choose. So I guess my advice is, "Dive in! The water's fine!"

In case this thread gets moved (which it might), I'll mention that you picked the subforum General META Discussion with the desciption "Discuss our emerging genre as a whole: Ideas, Concerns, Questions, etc.", so it's more for questions about game structure or the industry.

Under the other Meta section Player Help you'll find several topics on how to get started, how to play, and how to choose a game. The top stickied thread there is "How to Choose an ARG That's Right for You" and you'll find it's pretty much the general guidance that was posted in the reply above. It's not that we're keeping all of the good games a secret, it's just that it's like trying to recommend a book, movie, or music without really knowing you personally and your tastes.

Anyway, I'm betting this thread will end up being moved over there, and then people will reply with specific suggestions, just like some of the other threads in there have done:
  • Looking for a ARG, new to the Scene
  • New Guy Looking for New ARG
  • Looking for dark, mennacing ARG. Any suggestions?
  • Looking for a new arg.
  • Best ARG currently in progress?
(OK, some of those go way back to June.)
