NPR Story on Museums, Game Design, and ARGs
Jane McGonigal is the lead for this story...

The piece is the wrap-up on a series about the challenges facing museums. In this case the story is asking what could be the future of museums.

It opens with Jane as she's giving a talk about the importance of game design and play. ARGs provide a context for the piece, which includes an obvious mention of the Smithsonian's Ghost of a Chance game.

You can read the transcript or listen to audio here.

Millions of people play ARGs on their computers for several hours each week

Exaggeration, or is that the current state of the player base?

Nah, technically correct (if you go by some of the larger games' publicized numbers)...

But more like the reporter didn't really "get it" since the description sounds too much like a video game player stat.

I was at Jane's lecture and I believe the numbers actually come from World of Warcraft stats - the reporter misunderstood the distinction between MMORPGs and ARGs.

Yeah, kind of felt like that... It's a shame, though. Even though we could cobble together millions (or close to it) who might have played, lurked, or somehow been involved with an ARG, saying that millions are on their computers every night will only confuse people.
