Yeah, I see your point. Still...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
According to Drake's discharge letter, Red Show took place in 1997, not 1998. By October 1998, the CIA was discharging Grace. But then again, the book discusses Red Show occurring "ten years ago." So maybe it's an overlooked discrepancy between the book and the documents.

Good call on the pictures, Ophelias Clone. I'd been wondering what the armoured women were in some of them - helped me make the link to the Invisible Man and Henry's jewellery.

4/26 and 13/17 also match -- added to your list, that means that actually most of the pictures in the book do. I can't make sense of most of them, except that the armored woman and primoris maximus keep reappearing.

It's also worth noting that, because chapter 30 (which is an epilogue of sorts) is left out of the sequence, it centres in on chapter 15, when Zach first meets Henry. That's a thematic tand narrative turning point as well, so it fits neatly.

I think this business with the armored madonna is probably a pecursor to a coming novel in the series, which will go more into Henry's past. Knowing there are more mysteries there helps make sense of why his arrest record is included in the evidence pack -- and why there are so many bizarre thefts in it, including one of an "armored figure" from the medieval diorama at the House on the Rock. What the armored madonna means is one such mystery; who the Invisible Man is is another (remember we never found out; only that DA Taylor recognised him and lied).

As for the business with the dates . . . I'm most likely to chalk it up to mistakes. But I'll go over it again soon and see if I can come up with anything else.

It does seem we do have a general pattern here, but one with exceptions.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
To our matched picture list, we can add 8 & 22 plus 10 & 20. Now it becomes a question of what fails to match. And that list is much shorter.

3 & 27
6 & 24
12 & 18
15

Most of these pictures have to do with something in the chapter. But I can't figure out why Chapter 27 pictures a priest. I've no idea who that is.

In the Chapter 15 picture, the Invisible Man is holding a book called "Guarding the Light." I see no other explicit reference to this. Zach fears the dark, and one picture shows him armored like the madonna. I'm starting to think there's a family legacy of sorts Zach should know about.

Also, back to that date in the picture for Chapter 18. Maybe I should just drop it, but... November 18, 1998 wasn't a Saturday. It was a Wednesday. In 1997, if that's the "right" year for Red Show, 11/18 was a Tuesday

It is really strange that the dates contradict each other (and reality) all over the place so much! But I can't think of a way to extract information from the errors, whether or not they're intentional. If there is something hidden in them, I don't know what it's for. I'm on the point of e-mailing the author and asking about those and the typos!

I'm pretty sure the picture in 15 is Henry, not the Invisible Man. Although the clothing doesn't match the description, the hair and face does -- and the Invisible Man wears glasses. In which case I think he priest in 27 is also a representation of Henry -- who has at that point become like Zach's confessor and advisor, who carries a book in the same hand in 15, and whose smile is the closing image of that chapter.

Extensive net searching has brought up no reference I can find to a book called "Guarding the Light", or to those words in the various IG websites. I'm willing to sit on this stuff, assuming it's foreshadowing of a future book, and that the pattern centring on 15 is just a need piece of thematic structuring.

. . . if it weren't for the dates business . . . grr . . .

There has got to be some link with the triangle symbol and people putting on armor. The triangle is ALL over the pictures, and when you look at the people you see the same person in armor and out of armor. My guess is some secret society Guardians of the light or something, and that symbol represents them.

I brought my meaningfully marked up copy to ArgfestoCon, and I will ask Jordan Weissman whether the typos are just typos or what tomorrow night.

Then I will either get an autograph, or be escorted out of the building, depending on how the first part goes. Laughing

Great stuff! Could you also ask abouy the dates issues? And see if you can get him to drop any hints about the pictures?

Good luck, Deanodon! Very Happy

I've been looking back at that chapter picture with the dates. I'm trying to think whether 1998 and Saturday might have meanings of their own. Well, 1998 is the year Drake's family died.

Saturday is trickier. The only reference I've found is online.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Check Ruth Taylor's Remembrance Book at the Selznick & Sons web site.

"I'll miss you, Ruth. I appreciated your company and your willingness to listen to whatever popped into my head. I'll pour a glass of tea for you on Saturday.
Gertie"

That could be Gertrude Spindler, the lady in Brinkvale who is the heart of the prequel podcast, Sword of Blood. The women are certainly old enough to know each other. I don't think Zach was aware if they visited, though.

Alliance website

Tagline at the bottom of the site: "Protecting your assets since 1947"

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Bit of a clue here, referencing the National Security Act of 1947. One of the things this act accomplished was the establishment of the CIA...

Hey everyone,

So I talked to Jordan Saturday night. Here's what he said:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1. The pictures at the beginning of each chapter will become important in Zach's story, but we don't have all of that yet. Keep them in mind, and more will be revealed in future books.

2. The typos are most likely just typos. Sorry.

3. The date discrepancies may or may not lead to something, he "couldn't remember." (And he wasn't just being cagey, I think he honestly couldn't remember.) When I asked if the publication date had been pushed back and the dates needed to be changed but weren't fully, he said he didn't think that was the case.

4. I told him we had found that the Russian was still alive, and that the father's girlfriend had been killed by a Russian hit squad. He said that we haven't gotten all of Drake's story yet. There is more to find.

Another thing in general that he said, was that "the story really lives through the websites." These books aren't meant to be a live ARG, so there won't be anything kicking off. Even so, the fact that there's more to find of Drake's story is heartening.

Another thought-- our one "live" contact with the story is PixelVixen07. Has anyone ever emailed her with questions? She could "ask Zach" or "tell Zach" anything we find.

OK, I'm through too. Great book!

I know, many questions will come to my mind, but...

Here's the first:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
At the end there is new request for Zach, about "James van Zandt". What do you people think about him? I found this historic person:
Pvt. James Van Zandt Hutchins
http://www.angelfire.com/tx/RandysTexas/page97.html
I found it just cool. Perhaps there's more.

Just wondering if anyone has started listening to the Personal Effects Podcast to see if there is anything there? I'm going to start tonight.

Henry

Hi everyone. I'm a noob to ARGs in general, having come into this one through JC Hutchins 7th Son podcast, but it's fun. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm speculating a little about Henry, and thought I'd throw it out there since this hasn't been addressed yet:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
On page 175, he says "I loved your mother" and "Claire was my best friend." Several times, he calls Zach "son." There are also a number of passages, including a flashback, in which Zach describes Henry as a "father figure." Could Henry be Zachary's and Luke's father? He took the fall for Claire's murder, and Will stepped in and erased Henry from their life?

Very interesting thought! And perhaps, the Anti-Zach epoche has something to do with this...
