Stegging in Camouflage?

How secure is stegging in camouflage? If I launch a webpage with a stegged picture but said picture is not intended to be destegged a few weeks or a month into the game will people be able to brute force it? I have a great puzzle idea that will lead to the necessary code to desteg the picture but if it is destegged too soon then obviously information will be released too soon. As a group we are always trying to find new information and not realizing what is intended for the future or what the boundaries of the game are. Everyone is eager to find the next piece of the puzzle or advance the story. Is it likely that someone could or will use brute force on a picture destegged in camouflage? I only ask because I don't know exactly what brute force is or how it works and i want to make sure all my bases are covered. Thanks.

Well, it can be pretty easily broken:

However, I think that as a general rule most players won't take that route. If they can't figure out the password legitimately, they won't try to just guess it. I could be wrong about the ethics of the community, but the people I have collaborated with on solving camouflage passwords for AAP have been pretty good at figuring it out, and not just breaking it.
So, I guess do it at your own risk, know that there's a chance someone could jump the gun on you, but I would have faith that most won't.

A month?!? How cruel! Players will see that as both a challenge and a frustration: if it's there, surely we're supposed to be able to solve it. Your game should include some reassurance (perhaps from a character) that it really can wait. Personally I can see the shock value in having a picture be visible for a month without people realizing it is stegged, but these days the only way to guarantee that would be to not steg it in the first place, then swap it out a month later. Players can be too clever for their own good sometimes (and I say that with all the love in the world)

(edited for grammar when more awake)

I agree that it seems a bit cruel to put such a puzzle out there with no legitimate way to solve it for that long. I would think your players would become frustrated knowing a puzzle existed (very easy to check for Camo) and not being able to solve it. Finding out later that you'd spent 4 weeks racking your brain on a puzzle you had no chance of solving would tend to upset some players.

Would it be possible to put up an unstegged image at the beginning, then later when you wanted the information to get out, put up a stegged image that is a subtly but noticeably modified version of the original?

If you put something out there, you should assume that it might be found. No matter how secure that you think it might be.

And, if you issue a challenge, such as a stegged image, you should assume that players will do whatever they can to solve it and become frustrated if they can't. It's generally not seen as good form to give players a puzzle that they can't solve until later.
