 CTW BTS Roles

It was great being a part of the BTS (Behind the Scenes) team working on Chasing the Wish. Due to the medium (video) used by my character, most knew I was involved with the game throughout, but we're all wondering who was behind the curtain.

After the PM Chat, Dave said we could share what our responsibilities were on the BTS team, even though the credits aren't up yet . Let's put them here in spoilers so we can try to guess.

Diandra:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
played Channel 8 News Anchor Tracie Schmidt

Can't wait to find out about the rest of the team!

Two, two, two jobs in one!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I'm not a doctor, but I played one in Chasing The Wish. Dmax, I have an MA in psychology, and was working on clinical research studies at the time, so I had a lot of resources at my disposal to make me sound knowledgeable. And I wanted to do more with Dr. Kendra as well, but like Dave said, coordination was a problem. But I just started a Ph.D. program, so I will be a doctor within a few years. Woo hoo!

I also did the manuscript pages--I learned calligraphy & illumination by doing scrolls for the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism).

I crafted the Nine Stones, the Owl Coin stuff among the 13 items and the Statue. I took the photograph of the Statue and those where my books people were spec-ing about. Laughing

I was the photographic image of Sarah. The building is at 2840 Peachtree Road, Atlanta, GA, and is the apartment building where I lived when I was 21 -- that's 34 years ago; I ain't that skinny now. Rolling Eyes The animated Sarah looks a bit like another photo I sent. I do not have surreal green eyes tho.

From May till the end of the game, I became Phyllis.

wow Sally! You were CTW! Hearing about what all of you did makes me wish I would've worked BTS. I didn't sign up knowing I would be too busy to commit long term. Maybe next time...

Ok, I admit it. I was Iris. Very Happy Thanks to all who helped make the game the fun ride that it was, BTS and players alike! You all are so talented and it was so much fun being able to share this experience with you.

As others have said and will probably say for a long time: Dave, you are amazing!

Well, I was mostly a puzzler... Designed some puzzles, and only a couple were used, as well as gave some general puzzle ideas.

Dia, Kona, and I organized a birthday trail for Dave in June, too. Which counts for something... Moral support I guess Smile

Here's the flattering webcam shot we got of Dave while he was on his b-day journey through Vegas:

Aaaah -- the irony of it all (explanations below).

When I learned a couple of days after the start of the game that I was indeed to play someone BTS, I was very psyched. When I got my first set of emails in character, I was a bit less psyched for a moment -- because, as it happened, I was handed the most obvious target among the in-game characters -- Mr. Bruce Abbott.

As others have already summarized, the information we received about our characters at the beginning of the game was minimal. I knew that I'd gotten Dale committed, that I appeared to have a somewhat suspicious friendship with Diana Sprague, and little else. I could be a misunderstood, basically good guy. I could be an utter scum bag. Those possibilities remained equally probable for the first three or so months of the game. My first instructions were so vague (basically, thank everyone for their concern but deny everything) that I didn't have much to say -- fortunately, players began to accuse me (sometimes rudely) of every evil save the kidnapping of the Lindbergh baby, which allowed for righteous indignation and wounded honor. I decided that whether or not Bruce was the greatest evil known to man, he wouldn't be going around advertising it to strangers. No matter what my real nature was, as 'the businessman' I would try to cast my actions in the best light possible. Whenever a contact showed the slightest inclination to give me the benefit of the doubt, I attempted to wheedle my way into their hearts. I was not always successful, but in the end I had a handful of folks who at least did not think the worst of me (and in Kona/Heather's case, the best of me). Of course, I also had my own personal stalker in possession910 (ray) -- more on that below.

Some highlights of the BTS experience for me:

1) Dave gave us all tremendous latitude to flesh out our characters once he sensed he could trust us. If I thought I was running a line that could have impact on the game, I'd clear it -- but I don't recall him stifling a single creative impulse. Bruce's boat, love of wines, and professor father were all things I added (the first two after enough internet research to give me enough hoped for versimilitude to pull a conversation off, since in real life I know nothing about either). The photos of Bruce are indeed off the internet, as some surmised (that was quite an entertaining evening in chat, watching that argument go on). Unlike Kona/Heather, EoZ bears more of a resemblance to a portly, silver haired Jerry Garcia than an early 30's internet exec.

2) In light of K's declaration of her Angie-hood, it is entertaining indeed to consider Bruce's competing efforts to woo both Angie and Heather. Kona and I (in character) had an interesting time figuring out how to coordinate details of a dating life that was happening completely off-camera. I think, modestly, we did a pretty good job. As events ran their course, I believed that Bruce really began to appreciate and care about Angie -- and that Bruce became a better person for it.

3) As the Don more and more clearly became the face of evil, it became clear to me that Bruce, the creature of self-preservation that he was, would decide that ultimately siding with the Don would put him at risk of becoming expendable once events played themselves out. So by early April, Bruce was seeking to distance himself from Emptythreats/SOD. I put this to Dave, and he went along with it -- it was the first of several steps toward Mr. Abbott's semi-redemption. When Passion got on my case for continuing to use Empty Threats as my 'website of the month', I went to Dave . . . auraladdictions.com exists because Dave agreed with the idea that AFame would want to stop putting their connection with an indicted mobster in the public eye.

4) I really did figure out the first night (without PM contributions) that possession910's first message was a scare tactic from a player. It was such a good one, though, that it seemed like a shame to just bury it -- so I referred it to other players to investigate. It got enough attention that ray ultimately felt she had to reveal herself as the author. It remained an 'interesting' exchange of mails -- by the end, it had the feel of an extremely bizarre courtship dance of its own (admittedly, one where one the partners would have been bound and gagged on a rack, but . . .).

5) Bruce's road trip was my big, totally unscripted fictional contribution to the CTW proceedings. The original reason for the idea was an attempt to explain the fact that Bruce had been absent from the game for a week while I was on vacation. Once I started to craft the story, it grew in my mind into something worth elaborating. I took familiar elements from other parts of the narrative and tried to weave them into something that would add a bit of entertainment without forcing Dave into anything too crazy. Once again, Dave was very encouraging about my 'leaving the reservation'. I ran the basic elements by him, he let me run with it. And since during this time frame, Bruce was trying to help the investigators without leaving an evidence trail for the Don to find, the story was actually spun out over 15-20 emails to four different players (Kona, PHensley, Passion, and Dash) who reassembled the narrative. Many thanks to the four members of my 'bridge club'.

6) As a result of my desire to have something useful to impart to the players who 'believed' in me (yes, I know some of you didn't really trust my better angels, but beggars can't be choosers), Dave gave me the secret identity of Professor Whiting (who I thereafter also played) to reveal, in the form of a faked alumni magazine article. Unfortunately, the very reasons that my selection to be Bruce was fortuitous (like Bruce, I work with technology without seeming to understand it all that well) worked against me in this instance, as the damned attachment refused to attach. I'd read and reread the procedures for making attachments, follow them to the letter -- and poof -- another email would post with no attachment. It took days before it finally went out -- and days more, as the bridge club couldn't figure out how to reveal the info without revealing me as the source. Dave had ideas for the Prof, but many of them didn't wind up happening -- he'd send me mail indicating a direction the Prof would be going, but by the time we'd communicate next he'd often have released the info in other ways due to the time pressure of events. As a result, I never got to inhabit Prof W to anywhere near the same extent -- one thing I am sorry for.

Being able to participate in the telling of this story was tremendous -- and at the same time, we were all able to experience 99.9 percent of the game without knowing anything more than anyone else. I hope at least some of you enjoyed our in-game correspondence as much as I did. Kudos to Sally, Maggie, and Kona for their great work as well.

Sincerely,
Bruce Abbott (tehe!)

P.S. -- No, I don't know the AFame log-in either Smile

Kudos to EoZ and all of the other BTS players - You made the game real for me! You guys rock! Very Happy

Congrats

Thanks to Laz for posting my long missive here, and to all for nice comments. Many of you I've bestowed my own congratulations to over at CD -- but a special thank you to Ren, as my communications between Damon and Dr. K were a game highlight. Ironically, we're close enough geographically that the two characters could indeed have had dinner when it was all over (if Dr. K hadn't forgotten all about this Very Happy ). To all who helped make this the experience it turned out to me -- thanks from the bottom of my heart.

What I learned and what I did.lelelellelelelele

What I experienced
So I have been totally blown away by the game all that occured and the way that it ended. I had to process it all before I could say something.
This game and the people that played it changed my whole life in a most profound manner.
I learned so much about myself and others. I grew creatively, spiritually and emotionally. I am forever changed by my experience. The game for me began as one who was trying to become part of a community and I reached out to Phyllis cause there was so many wonderful things on the website and it had an air of mystery. At first Phyllis was blunt and cold but I just kept trying to bring her out and I surely did want to know about the floating maiden! She was funny too with a very dry sense of humor. I treated Phyllis as a real human and how I would treat a friend. One thing led to another and we really did become friends as Sally said. I was starting to feel an alliegence to her and didnt like the way that people were talking about her so I became a rogue player and did what my intuition told me to do and bring Phyllis into the fold. Sally was right I felt that flow happening that connection that happened between Dave and Sally and I. All of a sudden I could just SEE what needed to be told or asked and it almost always turned out the right way. It was electric and there was a catalyst between us all. It is a very special moment in time and I will never forget it. It was so satisfying. Thanks for sharing it with me DAVE AND SALLY AND MAGGIE
I learned that we are all needed. We all make a difference. Everyone that posted on the boards added spice to the story and opened up many possibilities. It was very emotional for I am a person that can easily suspend disbelief and play along. Phyllis was very real for me(not in a psychotic way guys) so it was easy to identify and go along. Boy how sad I was about the death of her husband for her. lelelellele. I was emotionally invested.
I also trusted Iris the moment she came on the scene and felt like I knew where she was coming from. I know for a fact that some would not approve of the things that I shared with her but I felt that Phyllis needed her just as bad as she needed Phyllis. And didnt it turn out to be true in real life? Maggie and Sally yall should collaborate on something else.
I was so ashamed the way that some people treated Phyllis and Iris. Remember what comes around goes around and if you put negative vibes out you will get it back in abundance.
So the funny thing is I got trained like Pavlovs dog (no I didnt drool) to wait for emails at a certain time and then if there was nothing i was like ok what is wrong now!!!! lelelelle NO MORE EMAILS SNIFFLE
It was so kewl to get Email from Dave and Sam but when I finally got an email from the Aloof Enigma Wes I was blown away!! ELELELLELE well from Iris description he was supposed to have been very handsome
lelellelee
The final Chat the final night was so bizarre. One thing that hasnt been pointed out that Lazlo actually wished for The Wish during the final moments of the game and I think that was important.
How fun that we all pretended that the Sarah Stones were heating up and vibrating!!!! What was kewl about that was we didnt premeditate it or discuss it at all, we all just played along spontaneously. that was kewl. Another instance of synchronicity.
All along I wanted things to turn out for the best that everyone would go back to the way they were before things went so terribly wrong but what I failed to add to the equation that for that to happen Phyllis Iris , Bruce Dave Sam everyone would forget who we were and what we did. So at midnight when Iris and Sam popped off the Aim I only then fully comprehended the impact of the moment and I will tell you I did boo hoo like a baby when I realised it. LELELLELELE. hey they in effect died that night to us....
So when the game ended I had a CTW shaped hole in my life and I greived for its ending. You must understand that I have suffered from a several year Creative Block and that is death for an artist. When I discovered CTW it kept chipping at that block till it is totally gone. Now THIS creative outlet is gone a very special moment in time that can never be duplicated and I miss that and will never forget it.
Now that my grief has subsided, lelelellelelelle, I realise that Chasing the Wish will never end because as long as I keep going forward to discover what will make me happy and bring magic into my life, to harness my creative power to my own star, then truly, Aglaura will always be the land of immortals.
Thank you again to Dave Sally Lazlo kona Elder of Zion and to all bts peeps not yet mentioned for allowing me to be a part of this and for sharing your talents so unselfishly. It was truly and honor that will not soon be equaled.
And to all those deep lurkers out there I know that you were important too and I know that I speak for everyone that we would love to hear about your experience.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
OK WHAT I DID BTS

I made the red disc that Wes found and sold to the gentleman that hid it and killed himself and made peeps see DEGS. Now I have always wanted to be a powerful artist I just didnt know it would be tht kind of power.lelelele What a thrill for me to watch the story unfold of how Eulalie and Spuds found it.

I also made the Fairy mask. I used a mold of my face and made it out of paper and volcanic ash clay. That was the second one I did cause I made the first one out of sculpy clay much more ornate but when I took it out of the oven I touched it just barely and it fell apart like a house of cards. It was like watching a comedy and it was too funny to cry...so I sucked it up and made the one that Amanda got and I was much more pleased with it anyway. I was so frustrated when there was a delay on the pass off of the mask.lelele The mask was my one addition to the storyline.
Well that is my story and I am sticking to it...and please Phyllis Iris if you are out there STAY AWAY FROM THAT PORTAL POTTY!!!!!

Fooled!

Omigawd imbri! You fooled me completely! Laughing On May 12th, I posted on cd warning elder not to treat you like an in-game character. Embarassed I was sure Dave had made arrangements with a real person named Elizabeth Vara to tie her site into the game.

Hope you enjoyed my email to you about the fairies at Findhorn -- that was a true experience!

Sally

OK, so was I the ONLY person at the Las Vegas ARG-Fest-o-con that was not a quasi-PM in CTW?

Confused
