I don't think it's a reach. I knew I recognized the term 'doleful city' from somewhere. That's written on the sign that Dante and Virgil see before they enter Hell

I think you're right about this being important. On thing, though: this is written over the portal---the gate---into Hell itself (there's only one gate into Hell). This reminds me a lot of the emphasis the relocation guide places on entering through the East Gate, not the North Gate. Is Milwaukee like Hell for some reason?

Or is this a reference to the actual underworld/underground where the Go.D.S.E.E.D. is buried?

Also, how can Milwaukee have an East Gate if it's on Lake Michigan? Is this more proof that "Milwaukee" is actually the city we call New York?

Just in case you didn't see it, there was an interesting letter exchange posted on the SA forum:

Quote:
Ok, sent an email earlier today.

quote:

Let me postulate a hypothetical situation.

In this EXTREMELY HYPOTHETICAL situation a representative of an unnamed British Technology firm managed to, through corporate espionage, obtain the original design specs of the G.o.D.S.E.E.D. That unnamed, purely hypothetical technology company then went on to HYPOTHETICALLY work on recreating the G.o.D.S.E.E.D. project, with a few refinements designed to limit its contagious properties. Let us also postulate that in this entirely, 100% hypothetical situation that there nonetheless was a containment breech and the entire theoretical 12 million population of a city which may or may not be London is at risk.

Response:
quote:

Susan,

Assuming, just for a moment, that there exists out there a bizarre alternate universe where London and her Blackstar branch weren't wiped clean off the face of the earth during Day Fifty-Two (I think?) of the The Three Hundred Troubles; and that a non-Blackstar company somehow tried to reverse engineer the European Go.D.S.E.E.D. through stolen documents; and somehow succeeded; and double-somehow had the foresight to have realized the single, simple mistake that Blackstar had made in the creation process; assuming ALL of that, then clearly this theoretical London-based conglomerate would have succeeded in solving what used to be man's greatest problem before, you know, the whole Armageddon thing that happened as a result of trying to solve it in the first place.

Thanks for your letter.

Something I just noticed about the video: during the teenagers portion Milwaukee is America's 22nd largest city. So wouldn't this imply that at least the other large American cities are still functioning, especially if Milwaukee manages to have a major export? If they were destroyed or wiped out or whatever, there would be no need to count them in as America's largest cities.

Well, there's also "Hotel for Dogs", but I don't think that TIMM and that fit together very well.

Summary:

  1. London's gone
  2. Troubles are days, not years
  3. Blackstar is/was a multinational company
  4. There was more than one Go.D.S.E.E.D.
  5. Go.D.S.E.E.D. was created to solve man's greatest problem (New god??)
  6. Total armageddon

But oddly there are apparently only five cities, I'm not sure what is supposed to be going on there.

I spec that this "22nd largest" honor is based on whatever extant material they have about the world, like how we're figuring out the years and such from clues like "ACT" and "The Birth of Cool."

It's just one of the things they know about Milwaukee, even though there may only be so many cities left. Whatever THAT means, of course. Smile

Didn't they stress that it was Go.S.E.E.D., singular, as opposed to Go.D.S.E.E.D. fragments, plural? I thought I read a phone transcript in which mike or joey mentioned this after the caller said "Go.S.E.E.D.s" and then they were like "oh, no, it's just "Go.D.S.E.E.D."

Strange...

There used to be more, but I think the e-mail is saying that those other Go.D.S.E.E.D.s have gone. The one in Milwaukee is all that's left.
Meaning that Go.D.S.E.E.D. can die..? Maybe without humans aiding it somehow it cannot survive?

I doubt in-game "Milwaukee" is actually IRL New York City; for one thing, the map shown in the pamphlet clearly shows Milwaukee across Lake Michigan from Grand Rapids.

Perhaps the East Gate is actually the way into the Doleful City underground, where Go.D.S.E.E.D. is entombed? That would imply this entrance is out in Lake Michigan? Perhaps it's at the gap in the breakwater, or where the drinking-water treatment-plant intakes are located (I know about the latter from having lived in Milwaukee when the Cryptosporidium outbreak happened because farm runoff washing out from the 3 rivers got sucked back into the water system, which wasn't filtering Crypto properly).

I think that was just clarifying that the fragments running rampant everywhere aren't "Go.D.S.E.E.D.s"; they're just fragments from a single Go.D.S.E.E.D. Maybe there are/were other Go.D.S.E.E.D.s in other cities, such as London... or Wichita?

I think Go.D.S.E.E.D. was meant to solve the energy crisis and eliminate warfare over scarce natural energy resources, but instead, the catastrophe brought about the very kind of Apocalyptic devastation that Go.D.S.E.E.D. was invented to preclude.
