It looks like plain ol' MediaWiki to me...

In the 2nd youtube video, right behind the guy holding up the killer bulb is a conspicuous sign saying "leo's hair 2010". Googling it points to 177 Hester St, New York, NY - (212) 966-1966

the street view shows a different sign..

street view isn't live so businesses may have changed between those two clips...

tresbien found the cowboy hat, and it is indeed the one I remember as a kid *nostalgia!*

and mediawiki is mediawiki Wink there are no rules or guidelines (any different than typical wiki editing/etiquette) so no worries there

While this is true, I think the "2010" points to this taking place during or after the year 2009, but I could be wrong. Google Streetview is generally pretty recent, but you're right, it's not 100% up-to-the-minute.

Maybe we could get a confirmation from a local? (Not that it's that important of a point, is it?)

There are also 2 listings for this Leo's Hair 2010 Inc, with the same phone number used for both addresses. 124 Forsyth St Apt 13
New York, NY 10002 is the other. I did a street view of that address and it's across from a park. I could call them tomorrow to see when they moved into the Hester street location and what business was there before (or after) them..if someone wants to pursue it.

Leo's Hair 2010

I search googled and found a listing for Leo's Hair 2010 Inc

http://www.yellowbot.com/tags/hairdresser/New%20York,%20NY/page1.html

Not sure how reliable that is, but the address matches up with the google map that shows a place called Hair 2000 salon.

I was able to get the phone number for Leo's from the yellow bot site (212 966 1966), called it and no one answered. However, I let it ring and it didn't go to a voicemail or answering machine, just rang and rang.

Then I tried calling Hair 2000 (212 234 5038) that number also rang and rang without anyone answering.

Granted it is after normal business hours, but I was at least expecting a voicemail or something. Probably though, both these businesses are long gone. I think this is just a red herring, but it might be worth a shot to try them again tomorrow during business hours just to be sure.

looks like (212) 966-1966 is a land line. probably would be a cell if it were in-game, eh..

Chinese Translation

Just by the way, earlier today [I forgot to post about it, had to write a paper for class] I recorded and played back the voices in the second video backwards. It's definitely not anything in reverse, which goes along with the fact that someone translated it from Chinese.

Probably trout, but felt like I should mention it.

Hey, I was the guy who tried (very badly) to translate the Chinese. Finally signed up for this thing. I'm new to ARGs, so hopefully I'm posting useful thoughts...

To expand on what I said before, the guy sounds like he's on a phone saying something like "No it isn't. No it isn't."

Then, he says "I will give it." Be aware that "I will give it" could actually be "it was given", as my grasp of grammar is bad and I usually understand Cantonese by analyzing whole sentences and using context to help me out. It could also mean "it was loose", as the word "sung" can mean both "loose" or "to give", depending on the intonation. Again, I'm not very good at differentiating intonations.

Lastly, he says something that I didn't catch at all. Because the words don't sound remotely recongizable to me, either he says it too fast or it's in a different language (Mandarin, maybe?). I don't know why he'd mix up Cantonese and Mandarin, so I'm leaning towards me just not understanding what he said.

Later, you hear a woman say "Aiya", which is just an exclamation like "Oh no!" I don't think that's relevant.

The more I think about it though, the more I wonder why the Chinese man's conversation is so prominent in the video. The audio doesn't trail in and out, as if the camera just caught a random conversation on the street, but seems to have the same volume throughout the exchange. It must be significant, right? But unless my translation is wrong, the words themselves don't mean much. Perhaps the fact that the language is Cantonese is the clue itself?

Why would that be? It seems like TIMM's timeline happens sometime in the future, when a catastrophic event happens. There are many examples of Chinese culture being prominent in future worlds (Blade Runner, Firefly, and Fallout).

In Firefly, America and China become the two big super powers, and their respective cultures meld into one (Mandarin sayings become common slang, even amongst Caucasians). In Fallout, a nuclear war breaks out between China and America, causing the post-apocalyptic setting of the video games. I can't remember why Chinese is so prevalent in Blade Runner, but I assume it's a similar sort of idea. The common theme is definitely that in the future, China and America are the two big contenders, and there may be some tension between the two nations.

This is super far-fetched, but perhaps Black Star was hired by the military branch of the US government, and Godseed was their failed attempt to make a next-generation weapon to fight the Chinese?

Asian people in first video

Hey, this is my first post here... Did anyone notice the asian couple in the first video? [7:22] Seems to me to further the argument for the Chinese in the beginning of the second movie...

Flaming sheep has some excellent points on the genre and Chinese... I wonder where this is going?

I'm not American, and my grasp of geography is not stellar, but according to this website (http://www.synydyne.com/hoopeston/), Hoopeston is in Illinois. Milwaukee is in the neighboring state of Wisconsin. Why would they say the Milwaukee Travel Commission (which has been proven fake already) is funding an Illinois town movie in that article?

Is the popular opinion that TIMM is an ARG to promote this documentary? Has anyone seen it yet (the trailer is copyrighted 2007)?

It's also interesting that the main syndyne website has no links (I found the hoopeston link through google). --> EDIT: Oh, tskegel already mentioned this part on page 7.

EDIT 2:

I just noticed 2 interesting entries on the wiki page for Black Star...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackstar

Quote:
Blackstar (spaceplane), a rumoured United States Air Force spaceplane

I know some have speculated that since the people in the videos don't act "normal", they may not be human. Aliens, perhaps?

Quote:
The Chinese Type 54 pistol, also known as the "Black Star pistol"

Perhaps more evidence for the Chinese involvement in the two videos?

Yes that is an interesting question and very astute. Being from IL, I can tell you that geographically, and in a Illinosian's eyes that in reality, WI would not be paying money to fund an Il event. Of course IL is much bigger with having Chicago only 100 mil from Milwaukee, and if anything, the opposite would be true.
