The fact that this is so many people's first ARG (myself included) says just how well made it is. I'm excited about what the next clues will be. *waits impatiently*

I was googling a bit after the new lead from the linkedin profile and found a bunch of stuff about a space-themed MMO called Blackstar Chronicles that lost funding last year and regained it.

The homepage for Spacetime claims that they were still in pre-production for Black Star in August, and in October were hiring people for the next 6 months. That wouldn't coincide with the Jan 16 date we're counting down to.

I'm curious what TIMM Milwaukee's idea of Oriental food is. I've seen some Chinese restaurants, that have a primarily Western demographic, serve french fries on the menu. So I'm trying to imagine something sillier than that...

Maybe the main course will be a plate of fortune cookies (or "fortune cookIES")Razz

I had no intention of doing anything other than lurking but when Yachi came up I had to do something about a thought I have been rolling in my head for a few days now.

I'm unsure if any of you are familiar with Shintoism, but I think at this point it may be pertainant. It is not Chinese, but Japanese but deals with some things we have encountered.

In Shinto there are spirits found in everything called Kami. Indeed when we die we are said to become ancestor Kami. Shinto involves a form of ancestor worship meaning one's family tree is of extreme importance. And how many Kami are there? Well they are infinite. But, as some of those with a little Cantonese or Mandarin here can tell you, word meanings in Asian languages are often contextual. Almost poetic in some cases. For instance, there is no clear cut traditional Japanese word to discuss an infinite number. So when told how many Kami there are, you would be told there are the eight thousand or eight million Kami (8 is an important number in Asian numerology, particularly in Korea and China). Sometimes they are also described as the eight thousand eight thousand Kami to imply an infinite.

Shintoism also has oni, which are sort of devil spirits, trolls and the like. These things just love to kill and often eat humans. Particularly the young(for complex issues involving society, ki, and just general disrespect of those damn youngin's). There are several ways to keep oni at bay, and it often depends on the oni in question. Usually you throw it either a gift of candy or some form of vegetable to placate it. Kappas(a type of water demon) for instance will spare your life if you throw a cucumber at them. Or Kuchisake-Onna(Slit Mouth Woman, a particularly angry ghost) is confused if you throw her candy to make your get away. Incidentally modern tales of Kuchisake-onna involve her wearing a medical mask which is not an uncommon sight on people in Japan because of their feelings on the rudeness of giving someone else your ailments. It calls to my mind images of the rebreathers. Perhaps its not something they inhale but something they exhale which does harm?

Whoah, has anyone seen this website before?

http://www.blackstar.com/

It's in NY, and has the exact same Black Star logo.

I'm checking out the site now...

EDIT: Hmm... on further examination, the place looks legit (some of the pages are copyrighted 2007, there's an article about Ryerson University getting some of the Black Star Photo collection http://imagearts.ryerson.ca/collection/Research.html...)

The logo similarities are uncanny, though.

EDIT2: Maybe Black Star helped with photography for TIMM? The other logos on the bottom all correspond to real life companies.

Somewhat offtopic...

was doing a little internet searching and happened to type in Blackstar Global Corp in a Google search. found one hit for a person named Yachi Yachi who is listed as CEO of Blackstar Global Corporation, an "entertainment company" based in the New York City area. very interesting. i know i had Googled Blackstar Global before. i think this is a new entry.

This being my first ARG, allow me to bring up an OOG question. (btw, I searched the guide for this and didn't find anything. Sorry if this is covered there...)

While I don't doubt that Yachi Yachi could be in game, it's also possible that a troll could plant this kind of info - Facebook or LinkedIn profile, press release, etc.

Has this happened in other games before? If so, how did the puppetmasters react? Did they play along and try to mold the game around the false info, or is there something that happens that rebukes that info? If not, anyone have speculation on what effects this could have on the game?

That's called a Game Hijack. It happens rarely, but there is really nothing a Puppermaster can do about it. It's up to us (the players) to sort through everything and see what's real or not. That's part of the fun of ARGs.

Intro
Hello and a thought

Hello, everyone. This is a very busy place; it took me hours to catch up.

I have just 1 observation: Has anyone else noticed/mentioned how much the fennel bulb, especially the drawings of it, resembles a human heart? http://www.nlm.nih.gov/MEDLINEPLUS/ency/presentations/100190_1.htm It's the first thing I noticed when I saw the first video. Not sure that it means anything at all.

And much praise to the adventurer who did the sortie on the NYPL. That was awesome!

hey jay,

i think it has been mentioned previously in the thread here or over at SA. you are right, of course. in fact i first thought the drawings were of a human heart! specifically when i first saw the drawing on the briefcase/ bag in the second video. looks very much like a heart to me. perhaps we will see a correlation revealed as time goes on here. it sets up a great analogy at the very least don't you think? life springs forth from the fennel bulb and from the heart of the human.

could be a very nice little allegory there...

Alternatively, MTC also doubles as the local police in Milwaukee now, with a nice-sounding name. Sort of 1984-esque, with the Ministries.

Alright, I am finally caught up with reading this massively long forum thread.

Anyway, when I watched the video of the deaddrop, I noticed the book the phone # note was in (the phone # that asks for a fax #) was the 1984 index. I wonder if they chose that particular year's index to give a 1984-type feel, or if something important happened IG in 1984?

I hadn't even thought of that, good catch. At the very least, I assume that's a nod to 1984.

Ooh, that didn't even occur to me. Yea, 1984 probably has some significance, the most obvious being Orwell's book.

As well, I like the idea that 1984 is the year something big happened. Perhaps it's the year Black Star came to Milwaukee. Or the year of the 300 Troubles.

I thought of this too, but I'm not so sure Yachi Yachi has anything to do with TIMM. If he does, I'm not entirely positive the ARG is connected with Shintoism. But it's a good theory. There are certainly many Japan-fans on the Internet to make it not entirely bizarre to have so many references to the country.

Hey, I just noticed the decent Ontario presence in this thread. I'm a fellow Ontari-ari-arian!

I really wonder how Canada is doing in the TIMM world.
