I'm really scared right now

To get it all out of the way this IS NOT some kind of bullshit ARG post, this is really happening.

Basically, I've been getting calls from this weird number all weekend and avoided answering it. On Saturday, it left a message on my voicemail. I checked it and it was this weird music, I didn't really think much of it, so I ignored it. The number kept calling me, and like usual, I just ignored it.

Tonight it left another message. This time, it was a recording of a conversation I had with my mom just a few hours ago. She was eating, her phone was off, her laptop was off, etc. I have now idea how this person recorded our conversation, but that's exactly what it was.

The number is 201-471-9853, seems to be from New Jersey (I live in South Dakota). I looked it up and found a page with various complaints. People have been called by the number, called back, and (for the most part) got pretty ordinary recordings. A few people got order confirmations (when they didn't even order anything), one person got a recording about a law firm. One that stood out said that they got a few seconds of silence before hearing a woman's voice say "goodbye". But nothing like getting recordings of conversations that they've had in their own homes.

I know many of you wont believe me, I can barely believe it myself, but I swear that I am NOT making this up. I'm really freaked out about this, and the only reason I'm posting this thread is to get some possible input on what's going on and how this person recorded that.

Shocked Freaky!
Is the answer machine anywhere near where you had the conversation? Having Googled that number, no one else among the people harassed by calls from it mentions any other instances of having their own conversations played back to them, so this sounds like a phone fault/issue at your side. Could your answer machine/phone have possibly been recording the conversation at the same time as it was trying to record the (most likely) dead air during one of these cold calls? Did your conversation correlate to a time when one of these calls had just come in and been ignored by yourself?
I'm sure there's a perfectly reasonable explanation for what happened, although I can understand why you'd be spooked! At the end of the day, that number is used by a company that are looking to make sales, and scaring the beejesus out of potential customers isn't the best way to do that (unless they're moving in to the extortion game). Smile

No, we don't have an answering machine, or a landline, just cell phones. And neither of them were in the room at the time.

I looked at the message again this morning, and noticed then that it was actually sent from a different number. I looked it up and it was one of those anonymous/no reply type things.

I see. In that case, I'd definitely consider taking it to the police. Anonymised number or not, they may be able to trace it. At the very least, they should be made aware of what's happened. It could simply be a prank from a friend or relative, but it doesn't cost anything to report it.
Keep us in the loop.

Nothing's happened since then, so everything seems to be fine. Not sure exactly what happened, but we were pretty freaked out to say the least.
