On your first row of 3,6,9,15,27, the mathematic scheme you are using leaves several variables out. But if we took it as a simple number sequence, the number 27 is left as the odd duck, and possible a red flag.

Beginning with 3 then 3+3=6, 3+6=9, 6+9 = 15. Although that leaves us, as I said with 27 being the odd duck out as it should be 24.

This was my first thought. Also a sequence of (x*2)-3 could be assumed, with x always equal to the previous solution. But then this would make '3' the odd one in the sequence. (6*2)-3=9, (9*2)-3=15, (15*2)-3=27.

However I look at this, it doesn't make a perfect sequence. So perhaps it's dependent somehow on other parts of the grid?

That is a hell of an idea, actually, that no matter how we look at it, one is always odd. What if each row contains a separate sequence unrelated to the previous row save it is an imperfect sequence, with one position never quite fitting.

Row 1000 would leave us with 27, or 3 depending(we can fist fight it out if you want? Razz ). Do you think that gives us our five blanks in Simple and direct?

Hi all, first ARG here, but i've been lurking since this hit reddit.

Has anyone else noticed the picture on the copyrightpage? It depicts three things, the sun the moon and something else. Anyone got an idea?

I'm very excited about this!

Welcome! Smile

I think it represents mornings, noon, and night, rather than the sun, the moon, and something else Smile

They put a press release out to actual press release sites.

GeV

GeV is giga-electron volts E sub p relates to a energy is a certain capacity, but I can't remember what.

Hmm, that is an interesting idea... that we'd need to find each odd one out. My only problem then would be, I can't make any sense whatsoever of the final rows.

I can keep coming up with ever-more-complex ways to look at row 1000, but fibonacci seems the simplest and most obvious. I can't decide if "Simple and Direct" is dependent on "Doleful City", but it would make sense if it was. While a lot of other material in the packet seems extraneous, these three graphics must lead to something.

E sub p is proton energy AFAIK.

Chuck and his pie...

Does that poem about briddles(birds?) in a pie remind anyone of Sing a Song of Sixpence?

Welcome IAmYams. Yes, I agree it's similar, and UNTHeath posted the same a bit earlier.

Okay, so i've been doing some heavy physics looking-around...

m.w.e. stands for Meters of Water Equivalent. It's used when discussing depth in terms of the amount of water above the point that would be needed to reduce cosmic ray flux by the same amount as the actual material above the point does. I'm not sure if we're talking flow of cosmic rays here, or some other kind of high-energy waves or particles, but it's a start.

I would think that the chart refers to flow of proton energy at particular depths of whatever material we're talking about. Could be concrete for all we know, but the depth doesn't refer to actual depth in feet, it refers to the depth in meters of water that would reduce the flow of those particles the same amount as the actual material.

I'm still lookin around Very Happy

Well, the + and ! are both programming operators. Add, is apparent, the second one means NOT. Which could tie it to both of the No's perhaps. I is often used to represent iterator. But that still requires some though and is rough at the moment. I still believe it is a set of some sort, though. Just have to look at it deeper when I can devote time to it. I have been bequeathed the title of "only man in the house who is not sick" so I am having to take care of everyone's business for them.

I keep wanting to think Simple and Direct is a key. If you notice the first superscript is always a letter and if it has a second it is a number. Perhaps it refers to a keytext, the poem perhaps, and the instance of the letter. k2 being second instance of k, for example. With the first number referencing how many steps away from that letter. In this case the Letters O and I would be variables, I suppose.

wow, we wanted something new to cipher and did we ever get it in spades! the first thing that jumped out at me was the file names of the pictures as i grabbed them frantically while the e-mail charade was going on. (someone posted that they thought this exchange was not intended for public consumption, but i think it is obvious it certainly was and added to the excitement of the moment once the booklets came out.)

back to the file names. as i was grabbing the files i was wondering why they had been named in such a complicated way. to me, these filenames do not look like the default naming system of a digital camera. then again, i am not a photography expert and professional cameras may work differently than the digital cameras and DV cameras i have owned and used. any photogs out there care to chime in on this? anyone think these may be code for something? even if the first half of the file names are the camera's numbering system, i am wondering if the second part of each may have meaning.

by the way, someone mentioned that the files had been uploaded out of sequence, this would be because of the file names, i would assume. Flickr must be set to arrange by file name by default. the files were ordered in just this same way when i dragged them all to a folder on my Mac. i had to re-arrange the two out of order files (the bookmarked pages and the inside of the front cover) to make the booklet appear in order.

here are the file names (in order) for those who didn't download them:

could be nothing, but i just found this a bit odd.

*why is the city termed "doleful" (mournful) in a tourism and recruitment brochure?

*the basic dark dollar arrangements are very strange and suggest a means for non-verbal communication between who? and why so few basic and seemingly useless phrases?

*obviously the point of this next phase is going to be to obtain the missing/ redacted pages/ sections of the guide. something tells me the grids hold the keys to the next phase. argggggggg!

the picture names appear to be standard flicker gobbly-gook. I checked a non related picture, and it had the same types of numbers and letters.
Although, you never know.
