[INTERACTION] WEBLOG ON DIGG/ REDDIT/ ETC.

hey all,

this was first discussed in the Mars thread. what we have done is we have created a blog talking about thisismymilwaukee, the Milwaukee Tourism Commission, and other TIMM related issues. in a previous Facebook post, it was reported that the PMs would release more information if we could get the game noticed on the front page of digg/ reddit, etc.

simply stated, we need your help in supporting the blog with votes! the game appears to be at a standstill and we have never needed new info more than now! come out and contribute/ vote/ post comments, etc.

the blog is here:

http://thisismymilwaukee.wordpress.com

currently working on getting digg and reddit buttons directly within the posts, but in the meantime, you can help by voting here:

http://digg.com/odd_stuff/thisismymilwaukee.com

will get the site submitted to reddit later unless someone else feels like doing it first. thanks in advance for all your help!

peace...

[EDIT]: changed the digg URL/ link to reflect updated link provided by Digg.com

[EDIT2]: Digg button now located within the linked blog post (at the top) for easy access to voting.

Digging it may be impossible. It woiuld require a minimum of 500 Diggs to even be eligable for the front page.

The new blog looks great. I'm sure that if we try (and maybe after the holidays) we can get 500+ diggs if we want. Just get your friends to digg it even if they aren't playing.

At any rate, we won't know until we try.

you're not even gonna try to argue with me? this was your idea. I'm just stating a fact that Digging it and making it stay dugg on such a fast moving site is difficult if not impossible. TIMM isn't backed by any major company (as far as we know) and isn't for any large film or game thing (as far as we know), so the interest in this....well, it's not the same as other ARGs.

Why don't we just ask the PMs for more infomation? New Years is closing in fast....

I created an account just so I can digg this. There are 7 votes already. I think we can make 500.

I know one thing for sure; having the words "get this to the front page. HELP!" in a story description will turn a lot of people off. There is a large population of Digg users that are extremely cynical and would bury this the first chance they get.
On top of that, the vast majority of Digg users will bury it as "Blog Spam" claiming that your un-newsworthy blog is a waste of their time. This isn't my view. I would love for this to make the front page, but I know how many diggers work.
I also vote that we just make multiple submissions directly to www.thisismymilwaukee.com to Digg, etc. I don't really get why there was a blog started in the first place, since the PM's are monitoring traffic to their own site and not some blog that they may or may not even be aware of.

this is a [meta] post, if you don't like [meta]
don't read it.

Holy Cow! How did this game discussion become so meta?. Maybe the PMs openly posting on blogs had something to do with this whole meta focus. Just in keeping with the tenor of this discussion...

I'm sure the PMs are aware of the beautiful blog that was created by Enso. In fact, I'm sure they are thrilled by it. PMs love stuff that players create. And I am sure they are tracking very bit of it.

I think Enso created the blog because people asked him to, and I notice that no one is thanking him for all that work. Thank you again Enso, for making that blog so we can all participate in it.

As for digging it, I think we can round up 500 people just from our friends, contacts and other people if we put a little effort into it. We never know unless we try - some people seem negative, I'm surprised by that a little, why not try it and see what happens?? - particularly as there seems to have been some direct communication from the PMs that they want us to do this..

Quote:

As for contacting the PMs directly and asking them for info, by all means try that, if you like and have a means to do so. Just don't be surprised if they can't or don't answer....usually info gets transmitted from PMs to players through the in-game mechanisms. I really don't intend to tell people how to play this game, or any other game, this is just my opinion. By all means, do what you choose.

I'm going to support Enso in his digg efforts, if only because I think he deserves support for his idea and enthusiastic work. I just hope he hasn't abandoned it. I'm really good at getting people to do things like vote for stuff, I think that we can do this. I'm sure thebruce will add something about it on the wiki, we can twitter it and send out other appeals. 500 people really isn't that many in the scope of the internet. I think digging the blog makes sense because it explains more about the game. Just digging the milwaukee site may confuse people.

As for no information being forthcoming...my best guess is that this game was always planned to be on hiatus through the holidays. Most games are.

thanks for the kind words, rose. obviously, you (and many others) "get it." this idea was born in the Mars thread and eventually took flight here. those who don't understand the premise should do a bit of research before condemning something they haven't taken the time to understand.

the blog entry was purposely placed in the video/ odd stuff section on digg.com for just this reason. of course this is not cutting edge "news". the way the blog is written (the tone and allegory) play into this angle as well. anyone digging through the video/ odd stuff section will more likely be pleasantly surprised at the find rather than wanting to "bury" it as being unworthy of their time. i am hopeful that this thing might grow some legs of its' own on Digg for just this reason.

honestly, i don't get the nay-sayers myself. as it appears to some of us, this is a legitimate "lead" that can be pursued. why not follow through with a concerted and sincere group effort? when the idea was proposed, the reason i decided to follow through and make an effort was because this seemed like a great way for people to get involved on a more personal level and a way to feel more connected to the game and to each other. everyone is not into cartography or cryptanalysis, or good at photoshop, or are located in New York or San Francisco (or wherever any other potential R/L events happen to take place.) it occurred to me that a blog would be a great way to get other people involved in a meaningful way. to my way of thinking, the blog is a self-rewarding exercise. people will get out of it what they put in, perhaps more.

also, as you alluded, rose, it may not even take a front page on Digg to elicit a response from the PMs. one would think that a sincere effort would not go unrewarded. after all, the people behind thisismymilwaukee DO want us to complete whatever path they have mapped out for us do they not? as i see it, they are in danger of losing whatever interest was generated over the past six weeks without an infusion of information. why not do everything we can to help motivate them in this regard??

btw, do people still honestly doubt that the PMs read this board? if you were running the game, wouldn't you? seriously. Rolling Eyes

no one is forcing anyone to click a Digg button. if you feel like participating, please do so. if not, you are welcome to watch from the sidelines.

anyway, the description on Digg has been changed to better reflect the "mystery" that is thisismymilwaukee.com. Digg also changed the location of the page slightly due to an error in the original URL generation. new Digg page for digging the blog is here:

http://digg.com/odd_stuff/thisismymilwaukee.com

(will update the original post so there is no confusion.)

Digg button added directly to blog post (at the top) for easier access to voting.

nine diggs in only a few hours when no one is even reading the forum is better than i expected actually. thanks for the help, guys! make sure to post on the blog and leave comments on the Digg site as well. let's get this thing noticed...

1. Enso, thanks for putting the blog up.
2. Lets be realistic folks. Will this get the attention we want? Maybe, maybe not. So don't bash it prematurely and don't get your hopes up either. Give it a shot and lets see where it goes.
3. In an effort to keep everything organized, here is the link to the original Reddit post which was put up about a month ago. Feel free to start a new one though.

http://www.reddit.com/r/entertainment/comments/7f606/no_clue_what_this_is_actually_for_but_it_is_so/

For what it's worth, I registered with Digg and Reddit just for this and posted/rated the post up. I also commented on the blog. I figure if this fails I'm out a whole five minutes. No harm done.

Couple suggestions:

You might want to redirect the Flickr set to the TIMM Flickr set for either the screen grabs of the video or the pages of the book.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/thebruce0/sets/72157609933410609/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/32903188@N05/

You might also want to put some links in the bar to the right to various important TIMM resources like the forum, Chucks Twitter, the Facebook accounts, the wikis etc.

I'm sure there are some I'm forgetting.

You may want to do some post with shots of the various puzzles. If I were stopping by the blog it would be the puzzles that drew me in and really got me interested.

And finally, you may want to replace the blog header with something more TIMMy. I mocked up a couple quick banners, feel free to use them if you like.

I created an account and dug it. Do I think it will make much of a difference, not really, then again for something that cost me nothing but 2 min of my time, why not.

Also, It's the least I could do to show some appreciation for what the PMs have created.

I get it, i do. But you gotta understand how Digg works. Everything that chrismenning said was right. Not only that, but there are people who would either ignore it or bury it out of spite. That's just human nature. Digg is a harsh website and expecting it to be on the front page is a bit nuts. If you want to try, though, then i wish you nothing but the best of luck. But, considering that the maximum of people in the chat room was about 40, i don't expect much to happen.

thanks for the support, Blessed. like you said, if this doesn't work, we're only out whatever time we've invested, so no big deal. as i said in my post earlier, there's not many other avenues open right now to try and persuade the PMs to dish, so it's worth a shot. what the hey, it's a fun way to contribute!

as to your other points/ suggestions: have you been peeking over my shoulder at my yellow pad? Surprised

i have been looking for some pics to change the header. i really liked the look of the layout when picking through what wordpress offered. the pics in the headder were so artsy i haven't been able to bring myself to change them! haha. you're right, though. it needs to be done. btw, the layout is called ChaoticSoul. ironic, eh? i also added the flickr widget with the intention of linking the TIMM flickr sets. will get to that shortly. there is also a widget for links, i believe. checking that now.

finally, if you would like, i would love to add you as a user/ author for the blog. it would be great to get a few different perspectives going imho. rose, this same invitation goes for you as well. let me know if you guys would like to do it and i'll hook it up...

oh, btw: check out thisismymilwaukee.com on urlfan:

http://www.urlfan.com/site/thisismymilwaukee_com/3783615.html

thisismymilwaukee.com ranks #109762 out of 3,783,534 websites. data gathered by ranking the popularity of 3,783,534 websites by parsing 135,301,437 blog posts from 2,183,188 blog feeds. pretty cool. this info alone should get us some action by the PMs...
