Palimpsest book ARG?

Looks like there is potentially an ARG, or something similar for an upcoming book called Palimpsest by Catherynne Valente.

There are a few trailers for the book on Youtube : 1 2 3. They point to the Tabu1arasa website and the blog there has a bunch of hidden stuff, email addresses and so on.

There seems to be a forum too at Quartered.org.. I've registered there but can't post yet. And another website/blog for Sato Kenji.

Playing with this has already taken up most of my lunch hour and forced me to remember my unforums account password when I couldn't find it on the forums Smile I did a few searches so hope I'm not duplicating anything.

Following a book link on Amazon where Kenjo Sato's book is listed, leads here. I'm sure this is IG as there appears to be only one book for sale at $295.00 and the H. F. Weckweet biography describes a strange black scar covering her hand.

*ETA I forgot to add a link to this website, it was linked to a commenter on Eddie's Blog.

Ok, had a chance to look at the links from Eddie's blog a bit more. I found the short story which the book is based on, so that helped me with one of the hidden questions at least. So, at the moment I have:

Do you know where you're going?
Answer:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Palimpsest. Not sure if this is the only answer, but it takes me to a page with a picture of the tattoos/marks mentioned on the sites.

What does Casimira's factory produce? Answer:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Vermin (from the story linked above).
This takes me to a page with an MP3 which I've attached to the post.. not sure quite what to make of it, if anything.. any ideas?

That leaves a couple of qs without answers:
Who rules in Palimpsest?
Who hides these things?.
There might be more that I haven't come across yet.

Anyway, off to email some of the addresses on the various sites..

I know who rules Palimpsest, it's...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Casimira.
I don't know the answer to second one though. I've sent a couple of emails, one to Sato-Kenji, and one to the girl who runs the Weckweet Fan site, so far no replies.

Just a list of people that probably have the same problem like Wren: a tattoo that suddendly appeared and that could not be removed. I think all of them are IG. Has anybody tried to contact one of them (I will write an email to Feressa (bisexual sounds interesting Wink )):

Sato Kenji (website see posts above)
Feressa feressaSPLATgmail.com blog
Ammonite hematite.ammoniteSPLATgmail.com
Desperadeaux desperadeauxSPLATgmail.com
Martha autumntealeafSPLATgmail.com blog
Jack www.quartered.org

and a lot of people on Jack's forum

ETA: This forum at www.quartered.org is so huge. It almost feels real.

ETA2: I found the links for the questions "Who rules in Palimpsest?" (the big black door) and "What does Casimira's factory produce?" (the devil). But where are the links to the other two questions (in which post)?

Clicking on the picture of the girl's back on the front page takes you to the first question, and the other is linked via a little symbol in the blog post titled "What Is Wrong With People?".

Answering "Who rules in Palimpsest" (good call on the answer, enaxor!) provides another mp3.. I'm at work though so can't listen to it, doh. What's on it?

Eddie has a new post up with a link to a jigsaw.. I've just now managed to get my computer to work with these jigsaws (there are some on Sato Kenji's blog too) so I'll give them a try Smile

AUZ505, totally agree about how huge the forum is! Not sure where to start with contacting people, but I added Feressa on Facebook, and user 'ninetale' on livejournal.

ETA: I emailed Stephanie at the Weckweet fansite (who it's just clicked is the same Stephanie from Eddie's blog) and she sent me a bunch of Weckweet book group questions.

ETA again: Sato Kenji also has a new blog post up... so Eddie is working with Lizzy to stop people finding out about Palimpsest, and Xiaohui wants people to help with the opposite. Hmm!

It's a song Casimira is singing. Here are most of the lyrics, but there are a few places I can't quite make them out... The chorus sorta plays in the background for most of the song.

Quote:
I am your green wind(?), you know me well.
Every secret in this place is mine to tell.
I can send you to heaven, leave you lost in hell.
You're all so very much alike, it's just as well.
I will tell you all my secrets, softly in your ear.
Be careful what you wish for, you may not want to hear.
My name is Casimira, as was every name before.
I watch your retched progress from afar.

Chorus:
Come here, I have kept a room for you.
Do not question. Do not fight.
I have kept a room for you.

?? hunting(?) secrets til there's nothing left.
You ask it of the heavens and the beggars in one breathe.
I sit back with the spiders and I laugh myself sick.
I watch you give it all away, you're all so much alike.
I will help you see the way of things.
?? you'll have no need for goddesses, unless you make me wait.
When you find I've come to love you, do not question, do not fight.
We have to cause a little pain to shed a little light.

Repeat Chorus

How far will you go?
How high will you try?
How much will you give?
Will you fall to desperation?
I will give you the names of those you must find to let you stay.
Take the secret from my hand.
I have kept a room for you.

Casimira dressed in green.
Won a war at age thirteen.
They tell you that I wanted it.
Don't make me wait again.
Dream yourself to death.
Cry yourself to sleep.
F__k for chance to dream.

You got an email reply from Stephanie? I sent her an email on Friday and didn't hear a thing back. The same for Sato.

At least I got an answer from an IG character. Not much I just asked Feressa about the tattoo and if it grows and she answered:

Quote:

It does not grow, it just remains as it is...

Here's the reply; I think it's probably a stock one though. I asked about the book groups and also mentioned Hortense's disappearance and the mark on her hand.

Here is the Book Club Guide, I hope it helps you out! Send us a picture of your club and we'll post it on the site!

Welcome to Fairyland: Organizing a Weckweet Book Club

We suggest focusing on the earlier books, which are more accessible to beginning readers and not as dark or sexual as the final books in the series. Get your friends together, make some tea (green tea, of course!), and share an old edition between you, or see if you can find an ebook version! My group loves to read out loud, and we found that to be a great way to share the significant expenses involved in getting a copy of this book! Of course, there is a new edition coming out soon, and I know we can hardly wait! As you make your way through the first trilogy, here are some questions to spark discussion in your group.

1. Why do you think September leaves home so easily?

2. Is Fairyland an allegory? If so, of what, and why?

3. It has been suggested that the Spriggans represent a kind of elevated masculinity, exempt from law, highly organized, able to swell and expand to great height when, ahem, aroused. What do you think of this idea?

4. Is the Marquess evil? Fairies are historically amoral, so what affect might that have on the morality of the Marquess's actions?

5. Is the relationship between September and the Green Wind appropriate given September's age?

6. Much has been made of the figure of the Bootblack. What is your interpretation?

7. Do you think September is a good role model for little girls, despite her less savory activities while in Fairyland?

8. What, if anything, do you think is the relationship between the disappearing child of the novel and Weckweet's own disappearance?

9. What is the significance of September's name?

10. In the end, September chooses not to return home. What do you think of this decision?

We hope these questions make your Book Club a lively one! Thank you for your interest!

Stephanie Tinder
