[META] Time for a subforum?

[meta]
First off, I don't know what the protocol is here, so pardon me if this is out of line.

It looks like it might be time for a subforum for TIMM, as it seems that we're starting to generate an awful lot of threads. Would this be possible? Or do we need more time?

I've got things that I'd like to post which don't really fit into any existing threads, but I don't want to trash this board with a million threads about everything.

Mods, if this is completely out of line, please feel free to delete/lock this post.

Cheers!

I think so, but that's up to the Mods/Admins.

I'd suggest that if you have info, questions, or suggestions that contribute to the discussion, but don't fit elsewhere, go ahead and start a thread. That's the purpose of being in CF with Potential. As this grows it's increasingly important to keep our information organized. Not to mention that more threads is often a signal that a game is growing large enough to require it's own subforum.

From the looks of things this game will carry on for a while, and is attracting a large audience, so it's only a matter of time.

ah, idk where to put this either, but I'd like to remind folks that drpfenderson set up two feeds for this game, one of which is updated with all the new uf topics, so if you want to keep track of all the posts related to TIMM, it's here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/TimmUnfictionForumThreads

the other feed has all of the game resources (Flickr, Twitter, wiki, etc.) in addition to all the uf topics, and it's here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/TimmSuperpipe

I also don't know the etiquette on editing the wiki front page, but maybe someone who's been working on it can add them there, so people can find them easier?

Wow thanks for the reminder. I was JUST saying to a friend earlier today that I would love to be able to hide my ARGing at work in a innocent rss reader! Thanks Very Happy

Actually, I'm going to have to update both of them now...since we have our own forum. ^_^ But that's a good thing. Off to do it now. Thanks, unfiction forum gods - we have organization now.

Edit: I made updating the pipe WAY harder than it needed to be. If your RSS feed gets spammed with dupes for an hour or 2...I'm so very, very sorry. Yahoo pipes doesn't have a "clear pipe cache" button or the like. I accidentally set it to tag new posts as Post: and topics as Topic:....but I fixed it. Don't know when it will update. As long as you're subscribed to the FeedBurner stuff - you will get the regular updates. Wink

Re: psa

any1 else here play 13lights?

independent args have a tenancy to die out just when they get their own forum. to the pm, i say: bloody well time to get us a puzzle/drop/COMMERCIAL TIE IN or u risk losing the group.

Does a successful indie arg exist? Must there be a commercial product for the thing to work?

fwiw, I ain't going anywhere, and I don't think a subforum is the kiss of death for *any* ARG, but that is, of course, coming from my own unique perspective which is shiny and snowflake-like like all other perspectives. Smile

There's been a bunch of indie ARGs that have done well over time. It's such an open question, though. Are you asking if they've been successfully concluded? That they were fun? That they had 'enough' puzzles?

CONCLUDED! Fiction needs a beginning, middle, and end, right? How does that fit with the curve (whatever it might be) of audience for chaotic fiction?

U, us, yeah we're in it...but compared to the beast's millions? TDK's readership? We're alpha users, tip of the iceberg, and we're just waiting to get this viral thing going. We need meat, and I speculate that getting users beyond 10k or so requires a commercial product.

If you can name me any1 outside 42e/42e lackeys thats managed that I'd be happy.

I played 13 lights from the beginning, and it lasted well after it was given its own forum. It had an engaging story, plenty of puzzles, and drops all over the US. So why did it die? Not because it didn't have an interested audience; at some point the delivery, the story, and the interaction just fell apart. We were given confusing tasks and provided little feedback. Weeks went by silently, then contact would be made(!!!), but nothing ever came of it. In the end it seemed that the PMs just let it fizzle out.

Do I fault them for that? Not at all. I enjoyed the hell out of what I played and applaud the work they did. It's not an easy thing to try and organize/operate something like this, utilizing a team spread out across the country and doing it all in their spare time. That said... the team operating TIMM seems better organized, the production level is higher, and the story is tighter. The audience is bigger and the enthusiasm greater. I don't see any reason to expect this will implode.

On success... it doesn't necessarily mean the same to the PMs as it does to you or I. While something like Beast or TDK was meant to draw an audience of millions, the folks behind TIMM may have much humbler goals. Hell, I suspect they sometimes find themselves wishing their phones would just STOP ringing =)

As far as sponsorship goes... I've seen just as many terrible commercially-driven ARGs as I have brilliant ones. Ditto with indies. What makes a great game is a great story and great storytellers, and I believe we have that here Very Happy
