[NEW] IRC Transcript -- Credible?

This just occurred in #matrix. The credibility seems a little low, considering during the last IRC "visit" a pretty big clue was dropped.

Aww... come on, this can't be real, can it? It's just too much "in your face", right?

Come on, I did a good job of posing as Beth at one of the Paintover Comments pages and everyone believed me. Not that hard to do.

I tried doing a /WHOWAS on all the guys who came in, turned up nothing much, except that "Aurelius" didn't give any info, so I did a /WHOIS instead, which gave me:

Quote:

| name : marcus
| chan : @#badspirit
| serv : meteor.de.eu.hub.chat-solutions.org
| idle : 14mins 33secs (signed on Sat Oct 11 21:39:28 2003)
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

After I pasted this in #matrix, he was immediately gone, from the channel as well as the server.

Anyone know what #badspirit is? Sounds like bad news to me...

How about changing your sentence to, "No one believes anything at paintover comments, ANYMORE." Probably because people like me and others posed as Meta characters and people figured it out.

Now, I'll just get back to tokin' it up if you don't mind.

I strongly suspect that badspirit is some other form of IRC interface.

"Einstein" had something about that in his/her exit string:
<-- einstein has quit (Quit: SpiritNET(R) - BadSpirit Corporation(C) 1987 Inc (EOF))

I did a couple of cursory searches for web pages with various combinations, but did not find anything. I would assume if somebody found a site like badspiritcorp.net with a valid Underscore Hosting image, it might help corroborate the validity of the event.

@#badspirit means that the guy was in the IRC channel #badspirit at the time I did the WHOIS (and that he had ops).

I've got the (whatever these are, hostnames?) for everyone... (in order of appearance on the channel)

caesar (d1998e31SPLAT3fd056b1.f4f1334.marzconsulting.com)
texel (d1c11de0SPLAT3fd056b1.f4f1334.marzconsulting.com)
aurelius (SpiritNetSPLAT3223f75b.354f3b3c.spirit.nom.br)
aurora (524518cbSPLAT3fd056b1.f4f1334.marzconsulting.com)
sever (SpiritNetSPLAT3223f75b.354f3b3c.spirit.nom.br)
einstein (SpiritNetSPLAT3223f75b.354f3b3c.spirit.nom.br)

aurelius, sever, and einstein are obviously the same person... or IP address, at least.

I'm curious about caesar, texel, and aurora though, because the second part (after the @) is the same for all three, but the first parts are different...

Is there anyone who understands these addresses better, and can tell us what they mean?

I don't know what you're asking. Is it fake as in part of the fictional websites of Metacortex, therefore part of the game? Well, I don't see a USH logo, sooooo....

IIRC, the first caesar came from a completely different host (like Comcast or something like that).

To me it looks like someone pretty much did a cut'n'paste during the first part of the conversation to imitate their styles, then messed with some heads.

Not credible to me at all. I feel that any IRC interaction would come in the form of obvious pointers (ie - a link to a website/directory/etc.), because I would view it as a last resort, and not a normal in-game interaction.

i greatly doubt that either irc posts from caeser and co. are real. anyone can come on and say they are caeser. they seem to me to be just a group of 12 year olds starving for attention. maybe their moms didn't love them enough. i don't know.

just because they dropped a clue first time around dosen't mean anything. say me (and of course, my merry little band of "1337 hax0rz") happen to figure out a new lead. any one of us could go, drop the hint, and get instant crediblity. then whenever we have a lead that we are too lazy to investigate, we just drop a hint, and everyone scrambles to figure it out like they are our own personal troop of flying monkeys.

incidentally, marzconsulting. its hosted by Covad Communications NETBLK-COVAD-IP-4-NET. everything related to the game so far is hosted by ServerBeach SERVER-ALLOC-1. fishy. yes.
