A quick one just to keep things moving.

While I expect this to play havoc with the internets, given all the ways we attack things, it's harmless.

ok, it's ROT-13, Javascript, and when you put it into the unfiction rot-it (link) it runs the script. That's cool.

Rule Number 1: It must be a 10-digit number.

Rule Number 2: The number comprised of the digits up to the position of a digit must be divisible by the number of that position.

LtoR or RtoL???

I'm thinking like:

2/1=2
12/2=6
612/3=204, etc. I'm also assuming that rule 2 means evenly divisible... I'm also guessing there are multiple solutions.

That means it has to end in 0, right?

All of your assumptions are correct (based on your examples).
Surprisingly, there is only one correct answer for this one.

Ditto. Smile

I solved it using a spreadsheet, and while it would be nifty if it turned out to be an isbn, I can only find references to the number puzzle.

3816547290 leads to a "Congratulations!" message.

290 isn't divisible by three. Mistranscription? Am I misunderstanding?

ETA: Congrats message is right. Me or the puzzle?

No. But 381 is.

I was going to ask Space for the cookie code to add your name to the "Congratulations!", but got lazy.

Cool.
Apologies for being so slow at getting a puzzle up. Embarassed
I was tempted to post a puzzle created by another UFer as part of a promotion and as yet unsolved, but wasn't sure if that would be ok as I don't have the solution.

No worries, Toasty.
That last one was really just interstitial programming, repackaging an old classic.

Is the creator okay with you doing this?
Will anybody's feelings be hurt due to the "promotional" aspect?
Will we know when we do have a correct solution?

If there's any question, it might be better to either do another one or let Lysithea go.

Your script was really nifty even without that. Smile

Those are some good questions about the promotional puzzle, but I don't actually have a puzzle ready to go yet.

>Is the creator okay with you doing this?
PM sent to the author. I'm hopeful that it's ok, as there has already been discussion of this one elsewhere at UF.

>Will anybody's feelings be hurt due to the "promotional" aspect?
The promotion ended in October, but again I'll get the creator's thoughts.

>Will we know when we do have a correct solution?
There has been one hint given previously, and the answer would be an understandable if not recognizable phrase. Plus, the contest website is still active and we can validate the answer there.

OK, permission has been granted, so here we go. I'll start with just the image and will link to previous discussion as needed.
Credit for this goes to addlepated.

Here's my best guess at a transcription (capitals are highlighted). One thing that might be significant is that each line has the same number of characters.

BEifliiMQc.iKZlil.i.iiwqci
hiic.ibUFbl.RGqiREiXBiEQio

Is there any background information about the game that we might need to know to solve this puzzle?

With the fact it comes to a phrase when decoded I've been looking at it thinking the dots are word separators. This would mean the single gray 'I' would probably have to come to an 'I' or 'A' from the decode, but there are so many of the 'I's throughout, so I don't think it'll be straight letters to letters substitution.

If each of the groups of gray or blue letters came to a single letter there'd be about right numbers for different words, but haven't had much luck with this yet. Odd that the blue always appear in 2 letter pairs.

On the run right now, but I'll post more later. This was part of No Known Survivors, a contest and a bit of backstory for the game Dead Space, chapter 1.3 to be precise.

OK, original thread for NKS:
http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26586

The video that the code comes from:
http://ll-100.ea.com/cem/u/f/GPO/ea.com/deadspace/Deep_Focus/flv/geneology.flv
None of the other codes used anything from videos though.

The beginning of the limited discussion of this puzzle:
http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26586&start=45

The original puzzle before a slight change was made to the one posted here:
http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?mode=attach&id=15734

Other encoded phrases from different chapters:
I HOLD YOUR HAND IN MINE D
THE DEAD WALK THE SHIP
ABSENCE MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDER
MY DADDY WOULD NEVER DO THAT
IT REQUIRES MORE COURAGE TO SUFFER THAN TO DIE

And the one hint given by addlepated:

Not really. I briefly considered counting the strokes used to draw the letters -- I imagine that the lack of curves is just part of the game scenario that I cannot see, not a clue. Unless there is some flavor text (which again i cannot see) or something else visual to give a hint, I'm afraid there just isn't enough data to work with. At least until I get a flash of inspiration...

Since this is now officially over, I can come out from the curtain and say hi. Hi! And I thought I'd quote the above post. For fun. Idea
