Going on what GreenWindmill noticed...if you look at the first letter of all competitors not disqualified, you can spell "gramp". Kinda funny. Smile

I actually noticed that too when I was hunting for anagrams - couldn't make it make sense though!!!

I'm sure the numbers of ferrets won/lost are important but I can't figure out how!

Consulting the Official Ferret Battle Tournament Rulebook, section 11 paragraph 5 states:

oh I remember when we used to make words out of the numbers on a calculator (that was way before 1337) and also we could use numbers upside down and in reverse order ....probably if I could figure out what happened in the story I would come up with a word made of numbers.

I'm pretty sure it isn't hello. Smile

I found this list of calculator words Note that as this word (or words if there are both won and lost column - but I think the total matters most) would be on the scoreboard, it doesn't have to be written backwards.

There's so much in the "almost, but not quite" realm on this one.
Not sure what it's gonna be, but I'm sure glad I won "all" one of my matches.
Since six and I didn't have a 2nd match, there must be something to our having (allegedly!) acquired additional ferrets via other means.

Do we know how many ferrets everyone has to start with, or are those numbers determined by the puzzle?

I can't even figure out how my record is 1-1 if I only wagered a single ferret. Is this a round robin (round ferret?) event? Groggy cause of the grog.

I DON'T BELIEVE IT!!!!

Results
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Rogi 7 Retso 0
Retso 0 MrT 2
MrT 0 Addle 3
Addle 8 Pancito 0
Pancito 1 Green 0
Green 6 SixSide 0

Leaderboard (having placed Rogi and SixSidedSquare at the bottom for cheating, adding their 'illegal' ferrets to the totals and taking into account all the ferrets Rogi distributed earlier...)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
--------------Ferrets----Ferrets-----Starting----Total
------------Won/Lost----Added-----Ferrets----Ferrets
Addle---------11-----------0-----------9----------20
Green----------5-----------0-----------3----------8
MrT----------- -1-----------0-----------6----------5
Pancito------- -7-----------0----------10----------3
Retso--------- -9-----------0----------10----------1
Rogi------------7-----------1-----------3----------11
SixSide------- -6-----------2-----------9----------5

Simple alphabetic substitution on the total column then provides us with the answer...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
THE CAKE!!!!!!!!!!

Unbelievable!!!

Well done GreenWindmill! I was originally looking for a word where the letters summed to 50, but when I stumbled across that one being 53 I couldn't resit it for the terrible joke that could be made. If anyone is interested I banged out a little javascript thing for summing words letter values when looking for possible words, avalible here (and if anyone wants to request any sort of similar little javascript thing I could probably carve one up).

Oh, and sorry again for that whole puzzle. Once I got started on the stupid, I just couldn't stop Razz

No apologies needed - enjoyed it! I was close in my early scribbles but made a couple of wrong assumptions which threw me.

Neat little javascript there - one very minor thing - your little explanation at the top of it says a=0, pretty sure that should be a=1!! Very Happy (The script itself works properly!!)

GreenWindmill: How did you come by the starting numbers of ferrets in that puzzle? I see nothing that could indicate that I started with 10 ferrets.

Retsbob - it was actually your post above where you asked how we were supposed to know how many ferrets everyone started with that pushed me onto the right track, before that I was just coming to a won/lost figure and trying to work out what to do with the negative numbers!

Sixsidedsquare basically followed on from Rogi's ferret puzzle. We established Rogi had 50 ferrets - 1/5 went to Pancito, 1/4 of the remainder to yourself, etc. That sixsidedsquare is a sneaky one... Wink

Well played, six. Well played. Worshippy

ETA: Tossing out another quickie:

You may have heard about the recent "Square Root Day" (03/03/09) and learned that these days (where the month and day are each equal to the square root of the year as expressed in two-digit form.) only happen 9 times each century.

There is another phenomenon like this where the sum of the month and day equal the year. Today (March 6, 2009) is one of these days because 3+6=9.
Including today, how many of these days are there in the 21st century?
