Quickie

Here's another quickie for you guys to figure out until someone finds a good one to post:

I really love the number three,
So when I store my books, you see:
(Now, pay attention to these facts)
I pile them all in 3-high stacks.
My books (now, don't be terrified)
Are all in 3 rooms side-by-side;
The count per room (don't be perplexed)
Is triple, one room to the next.
At 40 books, I bought some more
But never reached one hundred four.
So now deduce (oh, please don't groan)
How many books I claim I own.

Tell me if I understand the problem correctly:

3 rooms,
each room has n stacks, 3-high each

room A has x stacks, 3-high each
room B has y stacks, 3-high each, and the total = 3*A
room C has z stacks, 3-high each, and the total = 3*B = 9*A

the setup worked for 40 books (somehow),
then worked for future purchases under 104 total.

I tried:
room A with 4 stacks = 12 books
room B with 5 stacks = 15 books
room C with 4 stacks = 12 books
gave me a total of 39 books

then:
room A with 10 stacks = 30 books
room B with 21 stacks = 63 books
room C with 3 stacks = 9 books
gave me a total of 102 books

Maybe reducing the number of stacks in Room C was wrong.

gah, posting without logging in is always risky. Of course I wasn't paying attention to the tripling of totals from room to room, so ignore my experiment above. At least I hope I got the restatement of the problem correct.

yeah, I'll confirm 78.

I tried:
room A with 1 stacks = 3 books
room B with 3 stacks = 9 books
room C with 9 stacks = 27 books
gave me a total of 39 books

then:
room A with 2 stacks = 6 books
room B with 6 stacks = 18 books
room C with 18 stacks = 54 books
gave me a total of 78 books

Any more stacks-of-3 will go beyond the 104 limit (or will violate the room-tripling pattern)

(sorry for the triple post, i don't like logging in from work)

For completeness:
room A with 3 stacks = 9 books
room B must have 27 books
room C must have 81 books
gives a total of 117 books

Stacked Books

Good Job Rogi.

If I find some more of these un small ones I'll continue posting them. Everybody else should do the same until someone comes up with a good long one.

I've been using some from a Mensa calendar I picked up at Borders for a dollar and was going to post another one from that till I realized, while scanning a few weeks in the future, that someone has the same calendar Wink

Another quickie

Three riddles my grandfather told me when I was but a pup, and a problem I have.

The riddles:

1. I'm holding in my hand two U.S. coins totalling 30 cents. Yet one isn't a nickel. How can that be?

2. How much dirt can you take out of a hole 2 ft. by 2 ft. by 2 ft.?

3. How far can a dog run into the woods?

My problem:

My friends and I are having some delicious snack cakes, but Rogi is on a diet. I have 14 normal Twinkies and one diet Twinkie which weighs a bit less but is otherwise identical. So, I have 15 Twinkies, one of which is fractionally lighter than the rest, and a balance scale. Since I'm lazy I want to know the minimum number of weighings which will be required to make sure Rogi gets the diet Twinkie. Explain your answer, please. And let's assume I don't get lucky when I weigh the Twinkies and that I will find the diet Twinkie on my last weighing.

1. One is a quarter
2. None
3. Halfway (and halfway out)

I think there are 2 ways to do the weighing in 3 minimum attempts.

Weigh 7 against 7.
If they balance the one not weighed is the light one.
If not, take the lighter pile and weigh 3 against 3.
If they balance the one not weighed is the light one.
If not, take the lighter pile and weigh 1 against 1.
If they balance the one not weighed is the light one.
If not, you've found the lightest one

You could do the same thing using 3 groups of 5, then 2 against 2 on the light group and if necessary, 1 against 1 on the light pair.

All of 30 minutes on that... NEXT!

(One isn't a nickel... but the other one is.)

I can also think of 2 ways to do it starting with 6 against 6.

ETA:
Okay. Here's a quick original:

The ultimate lesson in following directions

It started with a terrible pang
and stopped at the end of the corridor
the trouble was unleashed in the middle
when something was left "a jar"

What is it?

Only partially. (In a phonetic sense.)
